Trystero comprises Scottish/Luxembourgish producer Thomas Lea Clarke (aka MR TC) and Low Bat, otherwise known as one half of the formidable duo Jean-Luc. Their debut album, Sfumare e Vedere, was conceived over three days aboard Urban Boat, a 1960s barge transformed into an arts and performance space. Moored along the river just outside of Paris, the duo embarked on a joint residency, discovering their complementary creative energies and a mutual passion for all things strange and psychedelic.

As frontman, Low Bat is a fire-powered poet, his unparalleled stage presence resonating through Trystero's music. The French native and fluent German speaker has a natural flair for languages. For this project, he sings in a combination of Italian and English about love, loss, and class struggle, constructing surreal wordplay about pelicans and puttanesca. Meanwhile, Clarke's drone-lead electronic accompaniment takes its cues from sizzling acid, 1990s snap rhythms, post-punk, krautrock and shoegaze. Firmly rooted in these tripped-out genres, Trystero journeys to entirely new cosmic dimensions.

Over the last ten years, Chris Imler's perhaps not quite as rapid but equally unstoppable rise has coincided with the world's free fall. “The Internet will break my heart” marks the steepest artistic stage to date. We see a man whose entire oeuvre is a late work, at the dizzying heights of his game. “So, the Internet, that's a really hot topic”, I can already hear blasé hisses here and there in the boxes. But the truth is that the topic is annoyingly topical. Because only now is the world wide web unfolding its full disappointing potential. All pipe dreams of an emancipatory power of the digital multitude (remember Negri/Hardt, haha) are as completely extinguished as the Arab Spring was swallowed up by the pre-nuclear winter. While they are capped from above in authoritarian states, social media in the so-called free world are primarily used by lumpen capital to undermine humanistic standards and by the remnants of the left for self-destructive polarization. But the cute animal videos! They too have their dark side, which Imler brings up in the title song: “The animals in the real world are under pressure”.

But what is an aesthetically adequate way of dealing with this new digital version of the frustration of progress? Can it still be the old cold sounds of defiant adaptation to alienation? In the announcement for the exclusive session that Imler recorded for the innovative London station NTS, the presenter placed him alongside Kraftwerk, DAF and NEU! That's not entirely wrong. But it's only half the truth at best. That becomes especially clear during your live shows. To a certain extent, they are public rehearsals. Sketches that he makes on his laptop on his long and numerous travels are tried out on stage on the same evening, with ad hoc cobbled-together lyrics and drum work that he himself describes as “sloppy-emotional”. His performance is deliberately chaotic, impulsive and, for all its Kreuzberg street toughness, heartfelt. And although Imler - even with his occasional trumpet interludes - never has direct jazz references, one can just as easily think of Thelonious Monk's unruly boldness or Ornette Coleman's aggressive dynamics as of those aforementioned representatives of Teutonic robotics.

One thing is certain: the improvisational charm of his concerts cannot be captured one-to-one on record. But perhaps this album succeeds for the first time in achieving the same intensity of experience by other means. For example, with “Let's not talk about the war”, which is almost forbidden to dance to by Imler's standards. The micro-social tensions and unrest in the face of the divisive debates of recent years are fizzled out here into something completely rousing. “Agoraphobia”, on the other hand, strikes the listener with an opium-intoxicated dimness. The sonic complexity is almost reminiscent of monster productions such as Talk Talk's “Spirit of Eden”, but the atmosphere is even more dazzling, more dangerous, and it is crowned by the enchanting voice of international underground shooting star Naomi Klaus. The most fascinating soundscape, in my opinion, was created by Imler and his brilliant co-producer Benedikt Frey with “Liturgy of Litter”. Although predominantly electronic, you have the feeling of being in the same room as the sound sources, as if you were standing in front of an otherworldly gamelan orchestra, whose iridescent tinkling drives you into the most beautiful, serious serenity.
But these are just three possible entrances into the labyrinth of what is certainly one of the most interesting albums of the year.

In 2008, Palms, the cross-continental collaboration project between Berlin’s Nadja Korinth and New York’s Ryan Schaefer, released «Der König» on their first album, «It’s midnight in Honolulu». «Der König» is a weird avantgarde post-pop track full of longing, wistfulness, melancholia, and cryptic German-English vocals.  2016 Menqui stumbled over the track on the Austrian social satire series «Altes Geld» and made a few small, respectful adjustments to «Der König».

For ages nighttime was said to be the time of ghosts and spirits. Creatures of the night were believed to gain special powers between 
midnight and dawn. In latin this shrouded in mystery lapse of time was called "intempesta" - time without time. 
Detlef Weinrich, alias Toulouse Low Trax, too, seems to have lingered in the irrational universe of frozen continuity quite frequently within the 
last two years. Everyone who drifts to the sound of his first solo album "Mask Talk" will soon sense the musical intensity boding a different 
dancefloor. 
Cool, atmospheric new-wave-sharpness, and a cushioned beat rate between 107 and 116 bpm call out a mechanical functionality that 
doesn't bow to any contemporary doctrine. "Mask Talk": urban music, club album. Big city lights in Africa. Chilly neon-sounds made in 
Dusseldorf. 
As a member of Kreidler, Weinrich just recently participated in the trio's newly found cosmic vibes, as well as in their album "Mosaik 
2014". Now, with his solo project, he is demonstrating that a MPC and a small synthesizer-ensemble are enough to bring alive futuristic 
dance music in the here and now. 
Bedroom-recorded under tense creative circumstances, the ten tracks invoke, mostly instrumentally, an eerie atmosphere that would fit in 
perfectly with an early John Carpenter movie. The tracks' volume sounds as if a whole band had been at work in Weinrichs own four walls. 
With plenty delay on the bass figures, compact analogue effects, percussive dabs and a rough blend of layers, Weinrich has, without any 
digital support, created quivering drum machine music, whose dancability he was able to test regularly as a resident DJ and co-owner of 
the Dusseldof-based club/ bar "Salon Des Amateurs". His new tracks breathe the hypnotic power of his DJ sets, where he arranges 
diverse rhythms between krautrock, cosmic, electronic and acid. They also remind of analogue-electronical pioneers such as Cluster or 
Peter Baumann. Also 1980s avant-gardists Cabaret Voltaire or Zazou Bikaye have left their mark, without Toulouse Low Trax explicitely 
referring to them. 
All tracks are committed to experiment. They leave room for every sound without neglecting rhythmical clarity. A dark, urban solanum, full of 
reverb, whose melodies are never prankish, but whose minimal nonchalance is sure to help not only the dark creatures through the night. 
"Form is essence brought to the surface" Victor Hugo wrote 150 years ago. "Mask Talk" is reasserting this theory as a destillate of an 
operating procedure seeking to subvert ingrained listening habits and to resharpen the contours of the audible. Electronic music beyond 
any categorisation, whose sounds and rhythmics grow to an emotional atmosphere that far exceeds the immediately hearable.
