A warped conception of space is perforated only by powerful drums that serve to snap it back to its origin amongst bizarre quips of a distorted vocal line.

In June Thijs was over at Amon Tobin’s place in LA for a studio session. This is one of the tracks that came out of that session, it was pretty much completely done in 3 days. It was made in a dark place, infused with love for 808 electro, breakbeats, old crusty synthesisers and samplers, alternate tuning scales, and Mezcal & Tonic on the rocks.

From hard-hitting, highly energised dance floor cuts to lo-fi, emotively powerful soundscapes, this is the ever-evolving world of Deft. 'Bellyboy' EP is his second release for Ivy Lab's 20/20 LDN label. The title track features 18 year old, London based lyricist Buchannan, mostly known for his previous work with Kai Whiston (Big Dada) as well as his releases on Brainfeeder affiliate PBDY’s TAR in Los Angeles.

“It’s been just over two years now since ‘Blackest’ EP was released, and since then I’ve been writing a lot of music in this vein; experimenting and acquainting myself with new techniques and sounds to further refine and adapt my output. ‘Bellyboy EP’ is a good representation of the past year musically, and the direction these experimentations have taken Deft. ‘Bellyboy’ sees my second vocal feature to date with the very talented Buchannan”.

Yip Wong aka Deft has become an immediately recognisable producer who skilfully hops from headphone to dance styles through cinematic sound design, crisp intricate percussion and immersive atmospheres.

Over the last eight years of releasing music, Deft has built an established reputation out of his own signature sonic personality, drawing influence from hip hop, sound design, house, 140, jungle and footwork. This combination makes him impressively adept at shaking off the constraints of genre and tempo, which in turn has gained him the support of Gilles Peterson, DJ Shadow, Daedelus, Om Unit and Rockwell amongst many others.

Deft’s profile within the electronic music scene saw him strive from peak to peak through a strong and consistent set of highly praised EP’s, collaborations and remixes through labels such as 20/20 LDN, Exit, 1985 Music, Wotnot, Rwina, Project Mooncircle, Skullcandy, 2nd Drop, Brownswood and Hypercolour offshoot Space Hardware to name a few. Along with having the opening track for Maya Jane Coles’ ‘DJ Kicks’ (!K7 Records), Deft has been on remix duties for the likes of Ivy Lab (20/20 LDN), Ital Tek (Civil Music), Gang Colours (Brownswood), Submerse (Project Mooncircle), Glenn Astro (WotNot), Tiga and Graham Coxon (EMI).

As a member of the ever-expanding Wotnot music collective and 20/20 LDN crew, Deft began his performances through live shows, bringing high levels of vigor and excitement to dancefloors in the UK, and has now transferred this energy into his eclectic and fruitful DJ sets around the world. Along with headline shows and tours in Japan, Russia, USA / Canada, China and all over Europe, he has supported the likes of Eprom, Skream, Machinedrum, Martyn, Alix Perez, Bullion, Tokimonsta, Reso and Paul White. Amongst his live & DJ shows, Deft has performed on Boiler Room as well as closing Gilles Peterson’s 2016 Worldwide Awards.
