BBC Radio 1 Drum & Bass Show - Flight DNB60 [11.24]

It's been a little while since my last mix and there have been some great new releases and releases of previously unreleased material (in the meantime) of Atmospheric Beats to soothe the soul and mind so I thought I was time get on the dex and press record.    The set below is the result.

In the mix you can find previously unreleased gems from Voyager, Nookie, Big Bud, Rantoul and Law & Wheeler on the immense Will Of The Universe LP recently released by Okbron.    

Stunning unreleased tracks from Primary Motive/Motive One (Danny C & Mike Pears) from Bukem's sets at the golden-era Logical Progression nights in the mid to late nineties also feature (with The Truth and I feel it being real favourites of mine).

Spatial keep progressing to another level with new forthcoming releases from ASC & Aural Imbalance.

Photek makes a return to making 160bpm Jungle beats with his forthcoming track Breathe.

And finally (last but not least) there are some new Atmospheric Beats from Non-Rev, Marc Renton, Archologies, Eschaton, Woken Balance & TRC 2 on the amazing recently released Cosmic Gallery LP on Omni Music.

Oh and the classic Coffee from DJ Trace recently repressed by Deep Jungle also features (I know this was originally made before 1996 but most of the beats in the set are 1996 onwards and as always with my sets a mix of the old and the new).

And almost forgot - real experimental beats and atmospheres from Warlock BBD with his track Remember Us !

I started this mix series a number of years ago, but then moved abroad and was unable to continue. During that time I started the Basic Rhythm project as a means of more explicitly exploring my own musical background in pirate radio and in the process re-contextualizing and updating it. Having since moved back to London I decided to relaunch the series, this time using the Basic Rhythm alias as it felt more apt to tie it to this project. Fact Mag were hosting the series for a brief time, but I decided I would prefer to do it on my own and have total control over the artwork and presentation. Each mix will naturally be entirely subjective, consisting of what I was playing and listening to at the time, as well as the big tunes on radio and in the raves.

The series starts at my early days of buying records at Music Power in Ilford, Total Music in Bethnal Green, Boogie Times in Romford, and even the odd trip to Paul for Music in Whitechapel; listening to Pulse FM, Unity 88.4, Weekend Rush and of course Kool FM; going raving at Telepathy, One Nation, Slammin’ Vinyl, Stratford Rex, Bagley's, The End and so on; playing on my first pirate station, eventually ending up on the infamous Rude FM. It kicks off in 1990, moving through early House and Techno, Hardcore, Jungle and eventually Drum & Bass.

The name is taken from a series of 12″s on 3rd Party Records, and feels suited to the mixes as not only did most of us start mixing in our bedrooms back then, but that is also where a lot of us made the music.

Shout out to Barry’s Da Mix, Vonnett, Leon, James, Pick N' Mix, Jamie K, MR2, Fugee and all the Rude FM Kru, Leon at Music House, Loxy, Jim Kutta, Mike and everyone at Planet Mu, Mickey Pearce, Lamont, Parris, Mick Harris, all the silent listeners and all the bedroom ravers.
