We would like to think we have served up plenty of special treats in our podcast series so far, but this latest one is certainly one that many people will get very excited about. It is not often that Detroit key-figures step out and offer us a window into their current musical world, but that is what we have here from Sherard Ingram aka DJ Stingray. Famed for many reasons—not least for always DJing in a black balaclava—he is founder of the Urban Tribe super group with KDJ, C2 and Shake, was DJ for the legendary electro outfit Drexcyia and is also a fierce DJ and producer in his own right. He came up playing tough techno and electro in hardcore motorcycle clubs in the D, but is now a regular in the world’s finest underground spaces, where he pushes a dark, intense sound that is socially and politically charged. Shades of Miami bass and ghetto tech also characterise his work on labels like Shipwreck, Bleep43, [NakedLunch] and Unknown to the Unknown, and in 2016 he is as busy and prolific as he has ever been. This summer he plays a rather exclusive back to back set with Helena Hauff at our festival in Amsterdam. 

The mix he serves up is a great snapshot of what Stingray does - forces you to dance to his high tempo, high impact sounds. He mixes them quickly and slickly and there is a real sense of urban paranoia and future menace in every tune he reaches for. Sit back, then, and bask in the glory of a real master.

Bialystok is a city tucked away right up in the North East of Poland, less than half an hour away from the Belarus border. As capital of the Podlaskie region, the city is more widely known for its forest and placid landscapes than for its electronic music scene. That is until in two weeks time when, for the seventh year running, Up To Date festival descends upon the city. Run by a team of passionate volunteers, Up To Date is still very much a DIY venture, albeit in the most positive possible interpretation of the term. For its 2016 edition, held on September 23rd & 24th, the program of the festival is set to be spread across three stages, the Białystok City Stadium underground, the stunning Opera house and the city's main landmark, the Branicki Palace. Ahead of the festival, we are more than delighted to welcome Umwelt for an absolute belter of a pre-festival mix. The French artist, who is soon to release an album on one of our favorite Berlin imprints Killekill, delivers an hour of menacing electro, stomping acid and frenetic techno and serves as the perfect introduction to what we hope will soon be a staple of the European festival circuit.

'Tri-gate' finds Sync 24 hooking up with UK techno noisenik @truss for a muscular electro workout with bass weighty enough to grab you by the throat, and dizzying 808 breaks to put your head in a spin. It’s a paranoiac soundscape with vocal smears and interference, driving you through a futuristic urban darkness in the way only good electro can, without ever being formulaic or predictable. The old cliche is true – if it ain't broke don't fix it, but to that we might add: just keep pushing it to its limits. Truss and Sync 24 are certainly doing that.

'Trick State Gesture' deploys classically implemented breaks, inflected very subtly with underlying squelches of synthesised bass. Gradually ascending melody builds in intensity as new layers to the song’s dimension come into play: reverb-laden tones punctuate its most intriguing moments, and lend the whole affair a genuine sense of soothing playfulness. As things approach full swing, it becomes quite clear that Design A Wave has a fantastic knack for crafting joyous, immaculately constructed and highly idiosyncratic electronic jams.

Helena Hauff et Umwelt se connaissent bien. La hambourgeoise est en effet l’une des signatures du label Rave or Die dont le fondateur n’est autre que…  Umwelt. Il faut dire que les deux producteurs ont tout pour s’entendre. Ils partagent en effet un goût prononcé pour une techno brute, sombre et glaciale.

Autre point commun, Helena Hauff et Umwelt sont chacun à la tête d’un ou plusieurs labels : Return to Disorder pour elle, New Flesh, Shelter, Fundata et donc Rave or Die pour lui. Une manière pour ces deux jusqu’au-boutistes d’éviter les concessions, d’évoluer au rythme de leurs envies dans les méandres de l’underground. Entre noirceur et complicité, ce versus franco-allemand s’annonce donc sous les meilleurs auspices !

Death & Leisure is excited to welcome back Jerome Tcherneyan and Barkosina Hanusova as the incredible Years of Denial for a special split 12” with Maenad Veyl , the brand new project from italian producer Thomas Feriero. 

Years of Denial deliver a heavy synth wave techno classic with “We Operate On Each Other” , and the pounding hypnotic “ Numeric Affairs” 
Maenad Veyl starts things off on his side with the broken percussion of “Paint The Ossuary” , after that we get the slow dragging darkness of “Tell Me Secrets” and lastly “Who You Could Not” with its drilling synths and noise.
