The first Musik For Autobahns was a delight: softly-softly ambient and subtle cuts from the likes of Move D, Suzanne Kraft, Roman Flügel and plenty more besides. Even amongst Rush Hour's bounty that year, it stood proudly out. A ripple of excitement went through BR HQ upon finding out Gerd Janson was lining up a second, with no shortage of marquee signings all coming correct with their A game.

A number of heads come together to translate these thoughts into sound - from Fort Romeau's Drive-esque "Seleno" joyride through to the propulsive "Melancholy" of Disco Nihilist. Perhaps none elicit as many feels as the enveloping opener from Leon Vynehall though.

As well as being a mesmeric mimic of accelerating down Bundesautobahn 5 at daybreak, "Midnight on Rainbow Road" got our Debut nod for three main reasons: firstly, it kicked off last year's sublime set from Gerd & Ata (so, about time); second, it's a welcome return for Mr Vynehall after a richly deserved breakout year; third, dude's got previous with N64 titling. And that's something we can all get behind.

For the past seven years Kornél Kovács has been busy rocking dancefloors and boomboxes worldwide as one third of Stockholm’s Studio Barnhus alongside Axel Boman and Petter Nordkvist. The label and DJ trio is spearheading a new era of fearless Swedish off-centre dance music, straddling the line between the cute and the menacing.

Anticipation for Kovács' debut album has been rocketing following stand out releases like 2014's wistful Szikra, last year’s mad party anthem Pantalón on Glasgow's Numbers imprint and the late night groove of Space Jam on Smallville Records.

On The Bells, Kovács pops open his trunk full of sounds nicked from the lost and found bins of nightclubs all over the world. From the distorted organ chords of BB to the stripped down trancehall beats of Josey’s Tune and Szív Utca and the title track's cinematic romanticism, it's all of the bells and all of the whistles - further positioning Kovács as one of the most characteristic producers of modern house music.

The record was completed in an intense two-week session with Kovács' great friend and studio engineer Matt Karmil in the winter of 2016. Another close friend, artist Malin Gabriella Nordin, has created the album artwork together with her brother Jonas.

Prompted directly by Kovács to give his report on the record, Studio Barnhus label boss Axel Boman had the following to say:

Kornél's bells will echo far beyond the nervous and trend sensitive ”dance" genre that our label sometimes is associated with, and into pop history. It’s one of our best, most innovative and creative releases to date, and the fact that one of my best friends has managed to do this on the label we share together makes me so proud that I want to cry. ”The Bells” is the reason I dreamed of starting a label in the first place.

Rhythm Section look to Poland once more for two of the most uplifting tracks of the year. Earth Trax (known for his productions as The Phantom & one half of Ptaki) and newcomer Newborn Junior pull two absolute classics out of the bag here that do what they say on the tin. Both Sax Track and Flute Track centre around ecstatic MIDI melodies on (you guessed it) Saxophone and Flute! Falling somewhere between the late night deep house excursions of Ron Trent (circa Morning Factory era) and more recent retro-leaning breakbeat driven output from the Pender Street Steppers et al, the Sax & Flute EP is a masterclass in sustain-release. Hailing from Santiago, Chile and currently residing in Milan, Italy, Paula Tape drops her debut release on vibes-specialists Sounds Of Beaubien Ouest.

Run by Project Pablo, who delivers this gorgeous downbeat remix of lead track 'Agua Congas', the label has been a strong part of the Canadian wave of hazy house and blissed-out production. Paula Tape's EP is another solid addition to the family.
