The song started as a poem to Mount Esja, that snow-capped wonder magnificently framed in the window during her morning coffee. Bjarni completed what was an a cappella version of the song and added the finishing touches to the song. Here is Island, a story about the desire to breach the distance between our inherently ephemeral existence and elements of nature (the ocean, mountains, air) that will exist long after we are no longer here.

My debut solo single, “Birds” was released in January 2020. Honored as KEXP’s Song Of The Day on May 5th the song includes performances by Dutch Red Limo String Quartet, Magnús Jóhann (keys) and Daníel Hjálmtýsson members Hálfdán Árnason (bass & synth) & Skúli Gíslason (drums/percussion).

“Birds” (single version)

Daníel Hjálmtýsson is a dark rock/post punk/alternative act from Iceland, fronted by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Daníel Hjálmtýsson and featuring Hálfdán Árnason & Skúli Gíslason. 
 
Releasing his debut solo single, the dark powerhouse, “Birds”, in the wake of 2020, Daníel had previously released music with his band HYOWLP. 
Most notably their debut single Afterglow in 2018. Both singles garnered the attention and promotion from indie radio icons KEXP in Seattle with Birds earning a spot as their Song of The Day, cinco de mayo, 2020.  
Daníel signed on to Dutch management and talent agency, Thero Agency in early 2020 and began work on his debut EP that was then released November 20th, 2020. American rock singer Mark Lanegan then said; "Daníel makes icy neo-goth music that that brings to mind the forbidding landscapes of his native Iceland". The Reykjavik Grapevine likened Daníel to Leonard Cohen´s and Peter Murphy´s baritone style vocals and called the music a mixture of alt.rock, gothic rock, singer-songwriter warmth that they coined as dark-rock. 

Daníel released three singles in 2021; "Back to Bed", "Coloring a Cloud" and "Tabula Rasa" all of which can be found on the act´s debut LP, LABYRINTHIA that will be released on November 11th, 2022 on streamers as well as black mono cassettes. The album will then see a vinyl release via the Icelandic indie label, Reykjavik Record Shop in March of 2023. 

Influenced by a vast spectrum of music, musical expressionism is key in the band’s creative process and fans should expect an intense and emotional musical ride through the constant struggle of light and darkness. 
 
Daníel Hjálmtýsson welcomes a variety of international musical guests Including Icelandic veterans Aðalbjörn Tryggvason, Elín Ey, Garðar Borgþórsson, Pétur Hallgrímsson and Magnús Jóhann with Aldo Struyf, Lyenn and Red Limo Quartet also joining. 
 
Daníel Hjálmtýsson kicks of the Labyrinthia release tour on Nov 4 at Lucky Records in Reykjavik as part of Iceland Airwaves and heads off to the Netherlands and Belgium on Nov 16 for a run of shows.
