ਜੈਜਾਵੰਤੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੯ ॥
Jaijaavantee, Ninth Mehla:

ਬੀਤ ਜੈਹੈ ਬੀਤ ਜੈਹੈ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਕਾਜੁ ਰੇ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ (ਦਾ ਸਮਾ) ਜਨਮ-ਮਨੋਰਥ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੀ ਲੰਘਦਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਜ਼ਰਦਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ । 
Slipping away - your life is uselessly slipping away.

ਨਿਸਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਸਮਝਤ ਨਹ ਰੇ ਅਜਾਨ ॥
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਰਾਤ ਦਿਨ ਪੁਰਾਣ (ਆਦਿਕ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ) ਸੁਣ ਕੇ (ਭੀ) ਤੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ (ਕਿ ਇਥੇ ਸਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਬੈਠ ਰਹਿਣਾ) 
Night and day, you listen to the Puraanas, but you do not understand them, you ignorant fool!

ਕਾਲੁ ਤਉ ਪਹੂਚਿਓ ਆਨਿ ਕਹਾ ਜੈਹੈ ਭਾਜਿ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
 ਮੌਤ (ਦਾ ਸਮਾ) ਤਾਂ (ਨੇੜੇ) ਆ ਪਹੁੰਚਿਆ ਹੈ (ਦੱਸ, ਤੂੰ ਇਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਭੱਜ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਚਲਾ ਜਾਹਿਂਗਾ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Death has arrived; now where will you run? ||1||Pause||

ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਜੋ ਮਾਨਿਓ ਦੇਹ ਸੋ ਤਉ ਤੇਰਉ ਹੋਇ ਹੈ ਖੇਹ ॥
 ਜਿਸ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਮਝੀ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇਰਾ ਉਹ (ਸਰੀਰ) ਤਾਂ (ਜ਼ਰੂਰ) ਸੁਆਹ ਹੋ ਜਾਇਗਾ । 
You believed that this body was permanent, but it shall turn to dust.

ਕਿਉ ਨ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੇਹਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਨਿਲਾਜ ਰੇ ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਹੇ ਬੇ-ਸ਼ਰਮ!(ਫਿਰ) ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਪਦਾ? ।੧।
Why don't you chant the Name of the Lord, you shameless fool? ||1||

ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੀਏ ਆਨਿ ਛਾਡਿ ਦੇ ਤੈ ਮਨ ਕੋ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
 ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਲੈ ।(ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨ ਦਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਹ,
Let devotional worship of the Lord enter into your heart, and abandon the intellectualism of your mind.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨ ਇਹ ਬਖਾਨਿ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਬਿਰਾਜੁ ਰੇ ॥੨॥੪॥
ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ (ਤੈਨੂੰ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ) ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਹੀ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ  ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਸੁਚੱਜਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਜੀਉ ।੨।੪।
O Servant Nanak, this is the way to live in the world. ||2||4||

Coming of the Guru 

ਸੁਣੀ ਪੁਕਾਰਿ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਗ ਮਾਹਿ ਪਠਾਇਆ।
The benefactor Lord listened to the cries (of humanity) and sent Guru Nanak to this world.

ਚਰਨ ਧੋਇ ਰਹਰਾਸਿ ਕਰਿ ਚਰਣਾਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਿਖਾਂ ਪੀਲਾਇਆ।
He washed His feet, eulogised God and got his Disciples drink the ambrosia of his feet.

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪੂਰਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਕਲਿਜੁਗਿ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਇਕੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ।
He preached in this darkage (kaliyug) that, saragun (Brahm) and nirgun (Parbrahm) are the same and identical.

ਚਾਰੇ ਪੈਰ ਧਰੱਮ ਦੇ ਚਾਰਿ ਵਰਨਿ ਇਕੁ ਵਰਨੁ ਕਰਾਇਆ।
Dharma was now established on its four feet and all the four castes (through fraternal feeling) were converted into one caste (of  humanity).

ਰਾਣਾ ਰੰਕੁ ਬਰਾਬਰੀ ਪੈਰੀ ਪਾਵਣਾ ਜਗਿ ਵਰਤਾਇਆ।
Equating the poor with the prince, he spread the etiquette of humbly touching the feet.

ਉਲਟਾ ਖੇਲੁ ਪਿਰੰਮ ਦਾ ਪੈਰਾ ਉਪਰਿ ਸੀਸੁ ਨਿਵਾਇਆ।
Inverse is the game of the beloved; he got the egotist high heads bowed to feet.

ਕਲਿਜੁਗੁ ਬਾਬੇ ਤਾਰਿਆ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪੜ੍ਹਿ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ।
Baba Nanak liberated this dark age (kaljug) and recited the mantra of satnaam for one and all.

ਕਲਿ ਤਾਰਣਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਇਆ ॥੨੩॥
Guru Nanak came to redeem the kaliyug.
