Fusing Japanese and European folk music with disco, Que Sakamoto has created a unique electronic sound which has spread across the globe. From his deep roots in the Tokyo underground, he finds himself outside Japan most of the year on his relentless tours of Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas. Back home in Tokyo, he is leading the Nu Disco scene in Japan as a founding member of Huit Etoiles.

Jan Lubahn aka 'Mad Lubi' grew up in the far north and moved to Berlin a few years ago out of love for music. There he works for a big record store, regularly spinning at various venues, most often and preferably at Arkaoda. In the past he has hosted several event series, organized and played festival stages, collaborated with great labels like Philophon and in his spare time he is constantly on the lookout for black gold. For almost a year now, he and his partner have been producing a monthly radio show on Cashmere Radio: 'The Endless Tape Machine'.

Jan about his mix:
"This mix called 'Nature Boy' meanders through my music collection, from the great love jazz, to ethno and exotic vibes to Latin America, to Jamaica to Southeast Asia to folk. The name of the mix has been floating around in my head for a while, firstly because it fits the podcast photo and secondly because it's one of my favorite songs for a long time. In this mix, nature is often sung about, discussed. You can hear an instrumental version of this song in the podcast."

Pingipung Podcast 151: Mad Lubi - Nature Boy

For this June&amp#39;s show, ahmed.sky (from Soucoupe) has recorded a piece that will be featured in the installation &ampquot;Radio Silence,&ampquot; an ephemeral micro FM radio station. This installation is part of the 48 Stunden Neukölln 2024 art festival in Berlin (June 28-30, 2024). The show features artists typically silenced or under-represented from different parts of the world, as well as those creating music in solidarity with underserved individuals or communities. Radio&amp#39;s Silence listening range reaches neighbors and passers-by in the immediate vicinity who actively tune in through the station’s micro receivers during this 48-hour time window at the gallery ZÖNOTÉKA in Berlin.

Irene Bi has a deep passion for exploring a wide range of musical styles and brings her selections to life. She contributes to the musical programming of Spettro, where she also curates the music as a resident dj.

Sebastian Grätz, based in Hamburg, Germany, and known professionally as Basso, is the man behind Growing Bin Records.
Growing Bin was set up in 2007 as a music blog before evolving into an online record store in 2012, with the offshoot micro-label Growing Bin Records launching the following year. The blog initially existed to catalogue Basso's broad musical tastes, today Growing Bin is very much in the business of selling records; From the ultra-rare and special interests to generally curious finds.

A core appeal of Growing Bin is that the material is handpicked according to, and solely for one man's esoteric tastes. There is no chasing of trends; If Basso likes it, he'll sell it. Another of the shop's unique traits is its copywriting; Growing Bin's website is a marvel with musical categories including Cocktails By The Pool, Cheap Magic and Dancing For Mental Health, breaking down into subcategories such as Embarrassing Mindblowingness, Never Leave The Bag and many more.

Anyway, over to the mix. As expected, Basso has delivered a wonderfully eclectic selection of records. 
We'd like to mention a few of his inclusions; 'La Bimini' by Spunk, a breezy P-funk monster if ever there was one, off their 1981 LP Tighten It Up, tight as f**k indeed! Remaining in Jazz-funk territory, Underground Canopy & Paloma Paloma's deep and soulful 'Même Heure Même Endroit', B-side of a 7" single from 2023, is just sublime. The HaHa Sounds Collective version of Marker Starling's 'Silk Rock', as championed by Gilles Peterson on his Worldwide FM radio show, is an absolutely stellar piece of music and arguably one of the strongest releases of 2020. Taken from her 1976 LP Più, Ornella Vanoni's moody 'Tu Chi Sei?' (underscored by a beat suspiciously reminiscent of a certain Paul Simon record) is another timeless inclusion here.

When two of today's finest selectors and DJs join forces for a three-hour B2B set, you know things are about to get funky. Recorded at Ohm in April 2018, the present mix finds fabled Neroli boss Volcov and Mother Tongue mastermind Patrick Gibin merging their widescreen vision and savoir-faire for a straight out compelling session of twin-engined floor heroics, capable to spiff up the greyest day.

To quote it soulful would be an understatement so much soul - as a genre and character - blatantly infuses the whole of this mix; and to limit it to the sum of its parts like most coldly executed mixes out there may be broken down to, would be missing the point completely. The groove is alive, and both DJs sure know how to keep the ticker running; weaving narratives as intricate in their build as they are simple to enjoy with your brain shut off. Hip-hop, soul, disco, r&b, jazz, funk, boogie, the spectrum's wide but the flow's smooth as one would expect from such vividly unique talents.

Not a mere addition of technical qualities and unparalleled selection skills, the union of Volcov and Gibin has given birth to an ephemeral giant of sorts, capable of transcending time and space through music like few can boast being able to. If mixing is an art as we believe, these two gents clearly belong to the higher class of wax-spinning maestros. When style and content are combined with such faultless taste and unrelenting efficiency, all one can do is chuck it, listen and let the vibes pour.
