Miko Mission - The World Is You (Mission Remix) 1984 	Classic Italo from a team of Italians including one of the guys from Klein & MBO (who produced some of Chicago’s favourite Italo cuts). From the drum programming to the synths, it’s full of sounds and motifs that would be adopted by house producers.

Fresh - Dum Dum (Reprise) 1984 	Chicago born and bred. One of the first releases recognised as House. Produced by Jesse Saunders (he’ll be involved in a number of the tunes on this show), the full original version on Precision Records has samples galore and incorporates vocals that from some of his other tunes coming up. Definitely listen to the full original sometime… raw, messy, hypnotic and running over a drum workout… a real slice of the original house sound.

Martin Circus - Disco Circus (Francois K Edit) 1979 Not a huge amount of classic 70s disco sound made it onto Hot Mix 5 tapes, but these records were played heavily in places like the Warehouse, Power Plant and Muzic Box. Made by a French group for a film score, I once saw an interview with Frankie Knuckles where he talked about the Warehouse records he’d play in the period where House as a genre got its name. He name checked this as being among the ‘underground’ disco sounds that he’d play to stand out from the generic mainstream records that had taken over the world and then received the famous backlash. The Dum Dum break is a classic and it’s fairly safe to presume it inspired the next track…

L'amour Feat. Krystal - Let's Make Love Tonight 1984 	Huge tune then and now also. Electronic 80s post-Disco at its finest showing the influence of the boogie synth era. Sounds very New York and in fact was New Jersey record label. Big tune at the Paradise Garage and there are so many links between what Larry Levan was doing there and what was happening in Chicago.

PART 1 Victor - Go On Do It (Radio) 1984 	Italo classic with a definite fat house sound. Written by a team of Italians that included Alexander Robotnick. Morgan Geist re-released this in 2005 backed with his own dub which is well worth checking out. Here I take the radio version and strip it right back. Spectacular drum programming and sleazy as fuck.

As members of the Hot Mix 5 began to drop out to pursue solo-careers, new members were recruited through DJ competitions. Steve Silk Hurley missed out during the first competition but then after raising his profile through his productions and guest mixes he later joined the crew. The concept of this show is that I have won the battle of the DJs and become the latest member.

Throughout the show I use many of the original jingles sampled from the original show recordings. The people of Chicago would often record the shows from the radio to listen back to as mixtapes. They would then send those tapes to friends and family all over the US and these would make their way all over the world spreading the earliest house sounds from the emerging scene. Derrick May and the original Detroit techno heads would drive to within the Chicago radio airwaves zone and listen on the car radio and also make tapes to take back to Detroit. As well as going to the Chicago clubs, these these Hot Mix 5 shows were fundamental in exposing the Detroit guys to this music, mixing and culture.

Alessandro Novaga - Electronic Drums - early 1980s 	This is as proto as they come. An Italian record that no one can date precisely but is known to be from around 82 which really pre-dates similar Chicago records by a couple of years. It’s a fairly plain and simple drum workout and many of the earliest Chicago-produced record were also just people jamming with a drum machine so I think this is a good introduction also. You’d file it under Italo Disco but it’s the most stripped back, minimal ‘jacking’ Italo tracks there is.

Chi Chi Liah - Proud Mary (Bonus Beats) 1983 	Dutch/American collaboration then mastered in Rome. Synth-pop cover of a decades old classic. The vocal version is so cheesy. I once came across this Bonus Beats version as the opener on a Frankie Knuckles Power Plant set. I presumed it was a Chicago record and then one day discovered tracked it down. Written by an American using a European production team i think this exemplifies this period of cross-fertilisation between Europe and the US. So proto.

I've long been obsessed with 80s music and especially have a sweet spot for the era around my birth year of 1982. As well as listening back to the old recordings from clubs, like the Muzic Box, Power Plant and Warehouse in Chicago, I have always especially loved the Hot Mix 5 shows on Chicago radio station WBMX.

Starting in 1981 the shows ran alongside the advent and development of house music and saw the DJs develop a high-energy style of playing short sections and edits of club hits of the day. They'd create hour-long mixes on reel-to-reel and deliver them to the station and these mixes became famous throughout the world.

So here I present three, hour-long mixes and set the year as 1984. So it is a collection of pre and proto-house. 1984 was when the first true Chicago house productions began to be released. These are tracks that influenced the formation of house and were important in the clubs and on the radio in Chicago in these formative years.

62 tracks over 180 minutes that took me 6 weeks to edit and 38 years to find and collect.

I've tagged every track with some notes in the comments because when the show was live I was already getting ID requests and when I tried to make a Spotify playlist for a friend using some of these tunes a load of them didn't show up so I guess Shazam might have a few problems also. Plus it's fun to tell some stories of the records and add context and make connections for those of us who aren't super nerds.

Finally! We're here with another episode of RADIORAMA.

And what a beauty it is. 

Been trying so hard to present this mix with words, but It is so so difficult presenting a person you've shared half a lifetime of experiences with. 

Because where do I Start? 

N'Djinn. The man in question for this weeks nexus of frequencies, also known as Aske is one of dearest. Now based in Berlin but originating from roughly the same rural area in Denmark as myself we go quite a while back.

Honestly i spent the first years of high school not knowing what the fuck to make of him. Definitely took a while to connect. However, had i known the array of absolutely incredible experiences I would have had alongside him, I would have given him the biggest hug on the first day of school no doubt. Egos and shit.. But hey.. We grew. And quite alot.

A cosmic comrade - A journey through space and music. 

Both having an urge for an astral escape as well as the ability to get sucked into music and forget time and place for many many hours. Jazz, Boogie, Funk, Soul, House, Disco, Latin, Dub, Leftfield. Not to mention our whole connection with the Greta Cottage Workshop lot, and our trip to Durusa Summer Hills & Virgo Festival. The places we've gone, the things we've seen listing them would just take too long.

A friendship a certain unique dynamic we share that makes spending time together so easy and so awesome. No matter the time spent apart, reconnecting never requires much effort. Dispite the difficulties of living far apart with alot of stuff going on on each side of the border. 

Through every bit of the inception of my career, everything leading up to it, and quite a while into it, he was there by my side, came to most of my gigs, and quite a few of them we also played together. A true friend and an absolute master behind the decks. 

Blessed to have had him as a teacher and an inspiration. Always on the search for the next great experience, he's been a constant influx of creativity and one of the biggest impacts on who I am as an artist.  

The mix itself is 1 hour and 30 minutes of "10/10 on the Theo list" as he explained it himself. 

It just goes to show how well he knows me. Because it is indeed 10/10 up my street. 

If I had to dance for and hour and a half, nothing would do it better.
