For many Afrikaans Hip hop supporters in the Western Cape and the rest of South Africa respectively the announcement of a new Afrikaans Hip hop group came as a sudden surprise. It is however a natural and organic amalgamation which took place and it was bound to happen as HemelBesem, Linkris and YOMA have been working together very closely over the last year or so.

Die Salwing is a collective that was established to serve as a creative vent/outlet for each of the 3 artists involved. A creative outlet which allows each emcee explore and push new sonic boundaries. Die Salwing is literally translated as "The Anointing". It is interpreted differently by each of the three emcees...

After YOMA’s 1st two singles “Crazy Tye” and “YOMA SIN” was released she has toured the proverbial world to the maximum, with awarded and honoured productions such as “Die Afrikaansvatter” and “ALLBasters”. She even visited The Netherlands and performed in shows at Compagne Theatre as well as the world famous “Die Melkweg” in Amsterdam. She is also heavily busy with cultivating raw talents and mentoring young artists with the ATKV’s Crescendo program which spans across the country, the Crescendo program has YOMA literally working from city to city throughout South Africa.

Still, she has taken the time to share her third single with us. On this song she reveals a different side to her by making complex rhyme schemes easily listenable and absorb-able to her audience. 

The producer, STUWI W’s music carries you as if you were moving out of the Earth’s atmosphere so that you can harmoniously float with YOMA in the Cosmos, every time the song is played.

YOMA releases a tribute to all women as part of South Africa’s Women’s day celebrations

“Roes” which means rust in English is defined as “a reddish or yellowish-brown flaking coating of iron oxide that is formed on iron or steel by oxidation, especially in the presence of moisture”. Interestingly enough in her new poetic-interlude YOMA uses carefully crafted metaphors and wordplay to encourage us to not allow ourselves to rust on an emotional, mental and/or physical level.

Being a lady herself in a male dominated Hip hop industry, YOMA dedicates this song to all women as a reminder of their ability and strength as women. She encourages women (and all listeners) to safe-guard their lives against the dangers of rust.

What is abundantly clear in this song is YOMA’s ability to transcend her writing and delivery from vibey and hard hitting boom bap Hip hop beats onto a softer, delicate and more soulful medium which is intended to sooth the listener into her story.

“HANDE OPLÊ” brings the hard side of Hip hop to the table. It is vital for the existence of boom bap that these types of sounds are heard amongst the youngsters. And then of course the razor sharp lyrics are never left behind.
