This is Allen Le Vie (KH7AL) bringing you another edition of Diet SOTA podcast where we meet with Summits On The Air activators and chasers to try an understand what it is about this program that combines amateur radio, summit seekers and chasers, something we all thoroughly enjoy participating in.  

My guest today is Guy Hamblin (N7UN), Guy is a 2x time SOTA mountain goat with over 2300 activation points, encompassing more than 450 activations. 
Guy Hamblin has alway enjoyed hiking, being in the outdoors, and enjoyed ham radio operating from wilderness locations or along the trails many years before SOTA was popular. His ham radio career covers over 60 years and love of the outdoors fortunately for us led him to stumble across Summits on the air. What you might not know is that Guy was instrumental in standing up SOTA for North America. Moreover he helped with the technical side of creating over 20 associations and most of the W7 state associations. He was a key member of the SOTA management team for many years, and earned a Sherpa Award in 2014 for his contributions to this radio sport program.  Today Guy will give us insights to what it took to get SOTA started in the US, how he has used goals to keep him motivated and interested in SOTA, and some pro tips to help you and others get out and explore with this great part of the hobby.

Well, it’s a little play on words that I came up with for 1) my goal to keep plenty of Summits On The Air (SOTA) in my diet (I wish I could do more of it), and 2) diet as it a lighter look at this program, that is well defined and professionally organized, to take a look at the lighter, human aspect of why so many of us thoroughly enjoy this part of ham radio.
