Dear Orphic, Float Records and HEDON,

First of all, I would like to show you my gratitude for the opportunity you’re giving upcoming, relatively unknown, artists (like me) with this contest. It shows you have the hearts in the right places. 

Secondly, the mix. The way I challenged myself is was in a three part way. As always, I tried to stay in the mix and really work behind my decks (I hope this translates well to the listener). Only then I can get a sense of fulfillment when I DJ. Moreover, where I personally challenged myself the most, was to refrain from the more hypnotic tracks I would play ‘normally’ and choose tracks that were ‘different’ but still that felt close to me as a person. Lastly, because my track selection differed from the usual, I utilized slightly dissimilar mixing techniques. Ones that give off a more old school ambience. 

That’s partly where the title “A Shift In Ambience” comes from. I tried shifting the ambience of sound, without feeling like it wasn’t me who was playing. I just transposed on my spectrum of musicality to a point where I felt it was suitable for the moment and my mood. 

Last but certainly not least, I truely was filled with enjoyment when recording this podcast and I couldn’t stop bumping my head around when playing these tracks. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.

The DifferentSound Podcast #312 welcomes CRYME! DJ, producer, and founder of the queer and FLINTA*-focused label SEVEN, CRYME captivates audiences with fast-paced sets that create joyful, love-filled dance floors. With performances across Europe and the USA, including support slots for Honey Dijon and Palms Trax, CRYME is recognized as “a master of rhythm who plays CDJs like a musical instrument,” promising high energy and smiles on the dance floor.

In this I included all my style and my musical path passing by the early work done on Prologue Music and Sonic Groove until the last on Outis Music. For the past 13 years, Jed Cohen has been working in the Cape Town and South African underground music scene as a dj, producer, club curator / promoter at Modular Club and label head at City Bowl Wax Network. He also presents two monthly events in the form of VAULT and Champagne that have gained a strong reputation in city. He is also one of the founders of Vertigo Festival which launched in January 2025. 

JED’s sound seeks to encompass the totality of his influences, while keeping strong attention to the dance floor groove. Generally techno focused but not exclusively so, he is able to incorporate a wide range of  collection into his set keeping things unique and adaptable to many spaces and set times, spanning house music, jungle, break-beat and other more off kilter grooves. 
As a producer, JED makes use of tools both digital and analog in crafting a unique sound with recent contributions to labels including: City Bow Wax Network [ZA], Drawner Records [DE], PRX Records [ESP], Knowledge Recordings [ZA] and MALöR Records [DE], Koncept [ZA] & Muud [ZA]

His music has been supported by the likes of Eric Cloutier, Tripeo, Marrøn, A.Morgan, Vincent Neumann, and Justine Perry among others, with his tracks being played abroad in renowned dance clubs such as Berghain, Tresor and Kalt Club.

Over the past decade, JED has shared stages with a multitude of international talent including: DVS1, Sterac, Ben Sims, Talismann, Victor, Stephanie Sykes, Kaiser, SPFDJ, Rene Wise, Antigone, Dimi Angelis, Deniro, Anthony Parasole, Lewis Fautzi and more. 

Off the back of recent European shows at the infamous Tresor in Berlin and ADE, JED is harnessing the momentum, prepped and ready for the South African summer.

'Spinning Grounds' is all about opening grounds - for both newcomers and experienced selectors alike - to spin music outside of club spaces to explore a wide range of genres from house, Detroit, deep house, dub house, ambient, breaks, UK garage, minimal, dub techno to ........
