In the early 90s, techno hits Japan. Surprised and intrigued, Takaaki Itoh was impressed with this sound. This unique style of beats revealed the gateway to a world of underground music in Japan, something he had never heard before.
Surprise slowly gave way to addiction when Takaaki Itoh heard the sound of such artists like UR, Derrick May, Axis, Hardfloor, Sven Väth, Harthouse, Warp and Rising High. 
Finding out he just couldn't get enough of it, in 1994 Takaaki Itoh began to organise his own techno parties in Norioka Iwate, having success by providing fantastic line ups.

In 1996, he decided that it was time to start making his own tracks, so he went out, purchased the vital instruments and began producing. 
After sending out 3 finished tracks to various labels, Electracom UK made the first contact with him, and followed to release his first track. This moment was something he will never forget, as for the first time in his life he was able to finally release his own record. 
Then several releases followed and he began to appear in DJ charts and magazines all over the world.

Takaaki Itoh's Japanese style of techno is purely unique, underground and nothing that had been heard before in Europe. 
In a couple of years, he became recognized as the most underground and expected japanese Techno DJ.
Takaaki Itoh has now taken the next step and started his own label Wols, whilst keep playing in great venues wolrdwide.

French-born but Berlin-based DJ & producer, Justine Perry proposes a timeless sound of fast-paced, deep and trippy grooves that have gained the likes of many key venues in Europe such as Berghain, Tresor, Rex Club, Khidi, IFZ or Radion to name a few. 

Always on the search for new artists to support, Justine has built strong relationships that have brought her to take part in Parisian Resilience crew and becoming a resident DJ at Strasbourg well respected club - Kalt. As part of the LGBTQIA+ community with appearances in queer parties, Justine embraces the need of building diversity and a safer environment in music. 

After spending time, crafting her own vision, Justine’s first productions and remixes have finally seen the light on labels like KR Records, Postdynamic or Unknown Movements.

Denise Rabe joins for DifferentSound Podcast #216.

Denise Rabe´s experience in the Berlin techno scene as a booker, radio host, promoter and dj since she relocated to German capital drawn by the possibility of a life in music, is reflected in the pragmatic, grounded artist she became and the unique, original voice she's developed as a producer. Her approach and work ethic can be seen expressed on every release she's done under her label, Rabe, where her music is matched with an equal amount of care, thought and work, in the vessels that contain it, within a coherent aesthetic and vision that informs music, artwork and presentation equally.

This has allowed her to recruit the artist who´s work resonates with her sensibility and can be heard in the remixes Rrose, Shxcxchcxsh, Headless Horseman, among others, have done for her releases on her and other labels. Imprints such as Mutewax, who released her first 12" in 2015, ARTS where she quickly became one of the label´s staples and Stroboscopic Artifacts where she published "Manifesto" in 2019, are clear reference points that describe her career and its development. 

Rabe’s particular inclination to sparse industrial soundscapes, gothic aesthetics, driven grooves under hooks that hypnotize as much as they distinguish, have propelled her 10 year career across stages all over the US, Asia and Europe, as well as the clubs that represent the apex of techno world wide such as Berghain and Tresor.

Kwartz es el nombre artístico de Mario Campos, nacido en Madrid en 1989 y actualmente radicado en Berlín. Tras publicar varios EP's en diferentes sellos internacionales, las producciones de Kwartz comenzaron a llamar la atención de los principales nombres de la escena internacional por lo que se unió a PoleGroup a finales de 2013, sello comandado por Oscar Mulero, donde comenzó a publicar sus trabajos con regularidad. Además de PoleGroup, sus tracks han aparecido en varios de los sellos internacionales más importantes, como 47 (sello de Tommy Four Seven), Mord Records, Semantica, Horo o Warm Up Recordings. 

Fue en 2016 cuando lanzó su propio sello: Order&Devotion, una plataforma donde lanza música que se mueve entre atmósferas oscuras y sonidos profundos y viscerales, todo ello rodeado de ritmos pensados para la pista de baile.

Sus sets podrían describirse con tres palabras: crudos, mentales y grooveros, empujando a la pista de baile a un constante estado de tensión.

A brief look at Border One’s discography suffices to convince, the Belgian producer’s impeccable string of releases for the likes of Token, KEY, SK_eleven, Voltage and his own eponymous platform attests to that of a uniquely talented voice in today’s techno landscape. Treating us to a healthy diet of hypnotic dub manoeuvres, experimental-leaning modular talk and heavy-duty 4x4 payload, Steven Petit pulls out a special two-hour parade of his typically immersive wares and up-for-the-jugular rhythms. To elegantly laid down layers of textured electronics succeed sequences of powerhouse prog combos headed straight towards massive dance floor fatality. Chopping and dicing the goods with his fabled clinical handle, Border One delivers a prowess of a mix, sure to dig up the rinsed-est raver out there and fling him right back into a state of blissed out bewilderment.

Lost In Ether | Podcast #230 | Toru Katsuta

“I first encountered Toru upon exiting a Tokyo DJ both one evening. He was waiting patiently to pass me a CD of his work along with a polite, hand-written note.
The tracks had a uniqueness and an appealing futuristic feel, and thus a few of them became regular fixtures in my DJ sets” ~ Ø [Phase]

It was through this humble approach and initial exposure that Japanese native Toru Katsuta came also to the attention of Charlie M Duff (AKA Matrixxman) and his music gained further broadcasting (featuring in various podcasts and DJ performances). This eventually lead to an invitation in 2021 to remix for the fast-rising Alarico on Matrixxman’s The Grid label.

In 2022 Katsuta's futuristic sound debuted on Ø [Phase]’s Modwerks label with the 6 track ‘Phenomena’ EP (garnering more support from the likes of Luke Slater and Dave Clarke). He’s now set to follow that up with the complimentary ‘Interconnecta’ EP - Due out on Modwerks on June 23rd and featuring 2 mixes from Ø [Phase].

In his DJ sets, Tensal explores all the facets of techno by alternating different textures and intensities that are nourished mainly by his own material. A journey through the present that has led him to perform in more than 50 countries around the world.
