When we last crossed paths, the stoic producer and multi-instrumentalist Devin Kroes was on the heels of his Breathe EP, a cinematic and energetic three-track collection. Two years later, and he’s put the finishing touches on the fruit of an altogether more intensive labor; with The Rust Music serving as home base for his latest release, he’s pulling back the curtain on his arduous and expansive ten-track LP, There Is Growth Here.

Brimming with attitude and sharp tonality, There Is Growth Here maneuvers from end to end with clear compositional intention; each track is the launchpad for the subsequent song, easily blending the berth of styles housed under one umbrella. With psychedelia and psybient fundamentals abound, this latest spate of tracks showcase rhythms ranging from scintillating and groovy downtempo through to elevated drum and bass, all the while showing off Kroes’ penchant and skill with latin riffs and six-string leads, tying the knot on a marked infusion of world-music into his established palette. Earlier this year I released my first of this series, BANG3RZ, with a bunch of heavier tunes I wrote mainly while I was taking a break from the project. The idea behind this series was to express the story of how Xenolinguist came to be, which I'm sure many can relate to. I started where most of us do, in the realm of mids heavy, loud, party-time EDM. While I was taking a step back, I started to experiment with genres for fun, and found my love for the more intense sides of bass music, and how it helped me through some hard and heavy emotions I experienced before and was experiencing again. I learned how music validates our emotions, and how honoring all versions of ourselves, we can truly heal, move forward, and develop self-love. 

I began my journey into the realms of psychedelic bass music in 2013, which was much more comparable to the music I was writing then. I found myself gravitating towards the more psychedelic and deep side of the spectrum with production and decided to start a new project, xenolinguist, where I would express myself through music fully and without the judgment of others determining my path. Sticking to that plan and figuring out what that sounds like has been hard and a journey in itself. This mix includes songs that I only dreamed I'd be capable of writing one day, and are what I've envisioned for my sound for years. That 19-year-old Meg wouldn't believe it. Or I'd have something to complain about maybe, knowing me 😅
