Caski has been enjoying something of a period of gestation in his adopted hometown of Bristol since making the move around three years ago and retreating from the 140bpm templates in which he first made a name for himself.

2014’s emf:004 for Indigo’s Electro Magnetic Fields imprint offered a glimpse at the fruits of the producer’s sonic maturation: a stripped back handful of mould-busting beats littered with pitch-bent vocal samples.

Continuing in the same percussive vein as Four Seasons’ inaugural release from Callahan (AKA Pasteman), Caski’s Structures EP is a groove-stuffed romp that blends industrial strength kicks and claps with field recording snippets and shuffling hats to create a moody, eyes-down three track batch that somehow remains utterly danceable.

All of dubstep’s minimalist hallmarks are still here – and the sub-bass too – but rhythmically there are elements of techno, dancehall and grime all battling for the steering wheel.

In fact, in throwing out all notions of singular genre category compliance this record probably has more in common with the original dubstep movement than an idle first listen might suggest. And it’s arguably this that makes it so appealing.

Having broken a decade's silence with 2016's 'System', LA-based electronic musician Joseph Fraioli, a.k.a. Datach’i, returns this summer with his eighth album 'Bones'. Released on Venetian Snares' Timesig imprint, 'Bones' features 12 tracks of mind expanding electronica, once again recorded on his custom-built Eurorack modular system.
	
Much like its predecessor, 'Bones' manages to make the most of the possibilities modular systems offer, whilst avoiding their many pitfalls that can often turn such music into little more than a dry academic exercise. Indeed 'Bones' is a remarkably intimate album, written and recorded in the time following his father's death, and reflects this intense period of personal change in Joseph's life. "Creating this music was a therapy of sorts," Joseph recalls. "It was almost like a close friend being there for me, and it's something that I hope others can perhaps utilize in the same way."

The connection to his father is something that is reflected not just in the emotional intensity of 'Bones', but in the actual production itself. "My father and I were very close," he explains. "Whilst he was sick with cancer I bought him a guitar as he wanted to learn how to play, just to have something to do while he was getting treated. After he passed away my mother gave me the guitar to have as a sort of memory of him. I had the idea to record some sounds and music on the guitar and load it onto granular sample players on the modular synth so I could make new music from those sounds as a sort of tribute to my dad. You can hear some of those sounds on a few of the tracks here like 'Arrivals', 'Motion in the Living Room' and 'Undimension'." 

The resulting album grapples with the intensity of these emotions. But for all their weight, tracks like 'Saugerties Road', ‘Rockledge 3A’ and ‘Antumalal’ transform that heaviness into something warm and comforting whilst the aforementioned 'Arrivals' or ‘Wand’ ultimately achieve some kind of escape velocity and soar.

Even though 'Bones' is about endings and finding closure, it also looks forward to new beginnings. "It was something very much on my mind throughout recording this album," he relates, "ends being beginnings and beginnings being the end. Cycles of time and how time works, it's all reflected throughout the album right down to how the tracks are ordered."

Ranging from blissful ambience and guileless, starry eyed melodies, to intricate claustrophobic rhythms that forever sound close to collapsing in on themselves before expanding into bold new patterns, 'Bones' is the work of a producer who, twenty years on from his debut, continues to push the boundaries of electronic music.

Bedroom Tapes is comprised solely of lost material from a recently discovered box of cassettes that emerged in the process of a house move. These tracks capture some of Paul Woolford’s most wide-eyed and naïve creative impulses at a tender age. Seemingly lost forever, some were part of sessions that led to him being signed to now-defunct UK techno imprint Blue Basique. This is the first chapter in this archive and an intimate portrait of the artist at a key stage of his creative development.

The tracks have been carefully mastered with a loving hand by Matt Colton who has been meticulous to retain their idiosyncrasies.

"The track is like Japanese cuisine- it explores lots of textures but coheres as a song er..."meal". A song is finished when you get the sense it's being pulled along to an inevitable conclusion. It’s not literally about cannibals. It’s about paradox, despair, broken families, the fictional boundaries we cling to and the self destructive cognitive dissonance we suffer because of this.

Ooh listen to how naked and vulnerable I sound at the end! I like the synth arp that counters that. It’s like a shield. I’ve been gently poking fun at terrible preset Hollywood risers but doing them with my own customised sounds-the idea of a riser is amazing, it’s kind of timeless. The mounting of tension and release. It's been around since the Greeks.

But the palette needs to be unique, personal. I’m coming at it from quite a militantly purist angle. Some of the field recordings in those risers are over 20 years old, from dictaphone tapes I didn’t even know I had. All this texture needs to be married to a good' ol visceral composition though. This fusion of those two aspects of music is the ideal. Each one helping the other one out in mutual song craft welfare. You can't be a libertarian about this stuff." - Chris

If you’re into forward thinking bass music and haven’t already heard of ‘wants’, let this be your official introduction. Over at EMB HQ, we’ve had our eyes on the Warsaw based duo for a while now – it was only a matter of time before we signed them to the label. Their sound is firmly rooted in techno whilst simultaneously reaching into UK bass, breaks, house and more, to deliver that signature ‘wants’ vibe. Each with their own established solo careers, the combination of Marcin Krupa and Kacper P is too much to handle. In classic ‘wants’ fashion, this EP titled ‘We Are Mostly Confused By The Way, This Is All Falling Apart” is a nod to their laid back attitude to beat making coupled with their meticulous attention to detail for high quality sounds.
