The German electronic virtuoso puts all rumours to bed claiming he might disappear after unleashing his collaborative non-Drum & Bass Neosignal band project a little earlier this year... Au contraire! Phace is all wrapped up in doing what he loves most; writing uncompromising music!

The theme of the EP is inspired by the omnipresent glass human being our era and society is characterized by. And each track featured on this release shines bright like glass as well. As usual we prefer to leave more detailed track by track judging to the listener!

Absolutely tearing drum & bass coming from Modulations this month! Certainly the hardest piece to come on Critical’s sister label so far and from an artist that not many will have heard of yet... all that could be about to change though; all hail the new, Emperor. 
Someone call an ambulance... ‘Monolith’ is too sick!! Dream inducing atmospherics introduce this one, lulling us as the break builds up from the back of the mix into a climatic drop of spine-shattering beats and the most horrid stabbing riff. Glorious, techy drum & bass that has seen Critical’s Fabric events going crazy over the past few months. Essential. 


‘Tension’ then takes us further into the rabbit hole, intro’ing with more eerie pads and simple hi-hats paving the way. Then wait for it......and things kick almightily into gear for a fresh roll- out of dynamite b-lines and crunching drums that’ll have the stepping crew marching as one across the land. Don’t answer that. Just press play and marvel at the power of northern trio Phobia, Sato and Tyrone. Respect-worthy players in their own right these three heads have consolidated their brute audio force to form their shiny new bullet-proof brand Chroma. Clearly three heads are capable of kicking serious dancefloor ass.

With previous on Phobia’s Coded and Klute’s Commercial Suicide, the guys have now secured a slot on one of 2012’s runaway success stories of the scene: Program. With a distinctive floor-focussed sound and a growing repertoire of exciting new artists, Ram’s sister joint is the ideal home for Chroma’s pristine production and ruthless attention to the groove.

We kick off with ‘Acetate’, a deep croaky roller that pays homage to the formative days of jungle drum & bass where the highly sought after dubplate was the scene’s gold standard. With its effortless roll and less-is-more motif, it’s reminiscent of early Ram material from the turn of the century such (think Moving Fusion, think Shimon, think Andy C himself) but it’s delivered with that all important contemporary crunch. The elements are devilishly simple but startlingly complex; just tight, chest-punching drums, hypnotising one note bass and a walloping sub.  

‘So Alone’ flips the switch for a more wholesome, soulful scenario thanks to a breath-taking reggae vocal loop that doesn’t sound dissimilar to Barrington Levy circa ‘Broader Than Broadway’. Again, the elements are simple but devastatingly effective as the bassline swings with well-rounded glee and snake-like drums that do more driving than an Eddie Stobart driver.

Following fine joints from the likes of Kove, Frankee, LoKo, Wickaman and more, Program have proved themselves to be one of the strongest new labels of the year. Chroma’s contribution is no exception and proves the trio to be a name to watch right now!

One of the UK’s freshest new drum & bass talents drops his debut solo single on Critical, this one is simple mammoth! Emperor has been making waves over the past couple of years moonlighting with various camps but it was the keen ear of label boss Kasra that cottoned on early drawing him deep into the Critical ranks. If this new single is anything to go by, one of the best decisions Critical could have made.
The cinematic intro of ‘Begin’ is beautiful blend of strings, reversed fx and the sultry vocals of Georgia Yates who featured on the Enei album last year. All build to a haunting dropout before the next stage, an absolute nasty tech-stepping future roll-out that’s been getting Fabric in sweat these last few months. Twisted, uplifting and wonderfully emotive, this is another slice of Critical magic.
Next up and we’re treated to the vintage double-bass grooves of ‘She Said’. Another huge epic intro featuring a soaring vocal drifting over ethereal pads features here as hi-end percussion leads into the fattest bassline for a properly funked up dance floor workout. Think Roni Size ‘Brown Paper Bag’ or Peshay’s ‘Miles From Home’ for 2013...bad to the bone!
