BRETT is a new label celebrating the co-dependent scenes of techno and contemporary art. 

A sub label of Inland’s Counterchange imprint, each edition will feature music selected by Ed Davenport (Inland / Counterchange), paired with cover art curated by Nils Petersen (Flipping The Coin). 

BRETT is dedicated to the spirit of Berlin’s early club scene, where cross-pollination and spirited discourse between musicians and visual artists etched the blueprints for a new techno-culture.

001 finds co-creator and long-time Berlin ex-pat Inland at the helm, delivering four surging, up-tempo club tools, plus 2 brainwave-activating noise experiments. Celebrated Irish-born artist Mariechen Danz provides a photograph of her visionary sculpture, ‘Statue for Gesticulation’, for the cover artwork. 

The towering super-human structure bears a multitude of nurturing hand gestures suggesting support, comfort and togetherness. Built from roughly textured grey concrete and resembling a technoid, monolithic bunker or industrial space in itself, the loving, humanist symbols of peaceful action mirror the culture of inclusion, love and acceptance practiced on the dance floor.

Just mention 'Terrace' in a techno environment and soon someone else will shout "pioneer!" As Florence, Terrace (@terrace) and (half of) Acid Junkies, Brabant-based producer Stefan Robbers was at the flying centre of Dutch techno in the early 1990s.

Perks is Robbers' fifth EP for Delsin in a relatively short time. On the one hand, it contains his signature sound: melancholic melodies and complex drum patterns wrapped in outstanding production; on the other, Perks surprises on many fronts.

For starters, the overall vibe is a lot more sombre, the chosen route much more experimental. Take 'Model A', a dreamy, 12 minute-long meandering epic that nods to the kraut-infused electronica of Tangerine Dream and Cluster but at the same time proudly carries the techno DNA.

A fascinating return of a true pioneer.

"The Sun Sets and I Keep Walking" is not a conceptual album by any means, but there are some ideas orbiting. The title track and a couple of others ("The Eternal Now", "Golden Aether") are a reflection on mortality and transcendence, whatever that means. Big words, hopefully expressed in an unpretentious manner. "Lie is the Force that Rules the World" is overtly political; it tries to express the uncertainty of these times of fake news, deep fakes and all-in- between-fake. Deceit is indeed a powerful weapon pointing at us all nowadays. "Gnostic Switchblade" is somewhat related, albeit taken from the other side: spirituality is an active form of resistance from that aggression. Maybe there is no way out, but there is a way. Finally, in a lighter note, "Smokehead" is a reference to both my live shows always full of smoke and the smokey flavor of a good Islay Scotch, which I'm very fond of.

TECH CLUBBERS PODCAST W/ ALESSANDRO ADRIANI

Alessandro Adriani is a lot of things – producer, DJ, live performer and label owner of Mannequin Records – but above all he is a tireless music researcher.
The Berlin-based Italian goes further than your average “crate digger” in pursuit of information about sounds, styles, artists and record labels, devoting countless hours to unearthing the untold stories behind the music he loves, regardless of when it was made.
Adriani’s obsession has naturally shaped his other musical endeavors, not least Mannequin Records, the label he established over than a decade ago, voted label of the month by Resident Advisor in 2017.
Over the years, the imprint has won praise from buyers and critics alike for its open-minded blend of on-point reissues, archival collections and fresh productions. The intriguing, leftfield mixture of material on offer – think techno, electro, cold wave, industrial, EBM, minimal synth, and more – is naturally a reflection of Adriani’s wide-ranging and off-kilter tastes ( as you’d discover if you had a quick flick through his vast and growing record collection ).
Adriani is distinctively drawn towards the dark and obscure, and you can hear this approach amongst the long, drawn-out mixes of his similarly eclectic DJ sets. 
Alessandro has contributed outstanding mixes for Resident Advisor, FACT, Crack Magazine, Bleep, Cxema and Dekmantel. On the festival circuit he’s made appearances at Berghain, Tresor, Atonal, Boiler Room, Dekmantel, ADE, Dimensions, Neopop, Positive Education, Signal and more, together with his bi-monthly dates at Berghain and Panorama Bar, a residency he’s held from 2016 to 2020.
As a producer, Adriani’s output naturally draws on these inspirations, but also reflects his obsession with electronic hardware. 
Under his own name Adriani has built a reputation for delivering heavy, angular and forthright club cuts for such celebrated labels as L.I.E.S. Records, Stroboscopic Artefacts, Jealous God, Pinkman and - of course - Mannequin Records.
