New Paradise Bangkok imprint 'Eastern Connection' takes it's lead from the two mix CDs of the same name - the label will explore the connections between the East African Coast, the Arab Peninsula, South East Asia and all the sounds and cultures traversing the Indian Ocean. First up, in collaboration with Addis Ababa based label Sheba Sound, comes this brand new recording of Ethiopian music that has its roots in tradition but is also about the current sounds being made by local groups the length and breadth of the country. Recorded in country and then mixed in London, this first single features vocalist Hanna Mekonnen and her band, who hail from the Mersa tribe in the Amhara region in the northern part of Ethiopia.

With a tough bassline, punctuated by hand claps and kebero drums,  Hanna's vocal leads a hypnotic call and response underpinned by washint flute and the emblematic krar. Side B strips the track down to its basics, as collaborator Nick Manasseh works his dub magic to mesmerising effect. Anyone who caught Christ Menist and Mai Sai spinning on the Paradise Bangkok 2015 spring tour would have heard this being played out, as well as on NTS and Boiler Room. Limited to 500 copies, don't sleep, and watch this space for the forthcoming album 'Out of Addis' due out in the Autumn 2015.

Ti Jan Pou Velo is a stellar gwo ka jazz fusion masterpiece recorded in 1988 by Edmony Krater, a former member of Gwakasonné (one of the most famous Gwo Ka modern group from Guadeloupe) with the help of the group Zepiss. Through this long time underrated album, Edmony pays a tribute to the heroes of traditional music from Guadeloupe, starting with Marcel Lollia better known as Vélo. With 3 tracks on each side this album strikes by the originality of the compositions, Tijan Pou Vélo the eponymous opening track is a soulful version of traditional song played in toumblak. Gwadeloup we compiled on Kouté Jazz is a uptempo groovy ballad transended by electric jazz arrangement. Crépuscule last track of side one is a kaladja (a slow rhythm) with Edmony Krater, strongly inspired by Don Cherry and Miles Davis, playing trumpet. On the B-side Chimin Spirit offers a lighter, more danceable view of the world led by the boulagyel (the traditional mouth drum that ka singers use to mark the rhythm) and silky arpeggios on the guitar, singing a message that couldn’t be any simpler: “Let’s follow nature; she will guide us!” In West Indies, Edmony Krater mixes a variety of Caribbean rhythms in with the lewoz rhythm, which is so warlike and mystical, tough and courageous. “We are all children of a common, shared history.” And this history even contains a sense of “terroir” or place, a notion that the Guadeloupian found in the work of Bernard Lubat. “That’s why I wanted to call this piece Occitan Dance. It’s a fusion based on my encounters with Bernard Lubat, with whom I share a common vision of music and its relationship to creation.” Like Lubat, Edmony Krater is incredibly open-minded to a variety of influences as well as a masterful player of numerous instruments (trumpet and drums as well as guitar and keyboards). He has managed to surround himself with a group of musicians who are well in sync with his vision: Eddy Lebouin, bassist and guitarist from Gwokasonné, the guitarist Freddy Tisseur, a childhood friend, the saxophonist Filip Augusty, the drum major Roger Raspail, the drummer Jean-Pierre Coco, the flutist Roseline Pougeol, whose brother played with Konket, and Jean-Claude Predantos on keyboards.

In its relatively short lifetime, Uncanny Valley has become an extremely well regarded label in European house music.

In these turbulent times we're currently living in and an overall fear-of-the-other vibe that seems to be setting in globally, I want to be more proactive about helping make things better for the world around me in whatever capacity I can with the resources and skills I have. One of the issues I feel is of a high importance right now is around refugee resettlement. With many of the worlds governments closing the doors to those in need, it’s more important than ever that individuals who care about human rights do something with their energies that goes a step further than retweeting the latest doomsday articles and clicking ‘like’ on a friend’s post. 

One of the small ways that I realized I could contribute is with music. While I don’t have a huge amount of money, if I can use my music to assist in causes I think are worthwhile then that’s a start. In my home country of New Zealand one of the organizations doing great work in the area of refugee resettlement is the New Zealand Red Cross. Their work on the ground alongside other local organisations in helping refugees to settle into life in New Zealand and help find work is particularly impressive, and their advocacy in pushing for New Zealand to lift it’s refugee quota in light of events across the globe is something I fully support. Their response to the New Zealand Prime Minister’s comments on the US refugee program suspension sums it up nicely… 

“We agree that it is the kiwi way to welcome refugees and believe that New Zealand has been a world leader in this regard,” says Anne Smith, acting Secretary General of New Zealand Red Cross. 

In the current global climate support for refugees, and upholding obligations to protect them, has never been more important. 

Long conflicts around the world have exacted a terrible price on civilians, among them high numbers of women and children and Red Cross is concerned that the current refugee quota in New Zealand does not match the global humanitarian need. 

“The majority of refugees are women and children, an emergency intake could assist some of these families who are most vulnerable,” says Mrs Smith. 

As the primary provider of refugee resettlement support in Aotearoa, Red Cross is confident that New Zealand has the capacity to do more to meet the ongoing humanitarian need. 

“The continual offers of support we have from kiwis demonstrates that people care about what’s happening on the global stage and want to help.” 

New Zealand has a world class refugee resettlement programme which means we are in a position to respond to urgent humanitarian need. An emergency intake now is both possible and urgently required."

Freedom Of Movement is a piece of music I produced in collaboration with Los Angeles based pianist and programmer Mark de Clive-Lowe and Berlin based bassist Matt Dal Din. As a long form and abstract instrumental journey through multiple forms, my hope with this piece is that the modal harmony and off kilter rhythms gives some sense of unpredictability as well as forward motion that is representative of the long and arduous journey a refugee would need to take to find a better life for themselves. 

100% of the artist’s proceeds from the sale of Freedom Of Movement go to the New Zealand Red Cross in their efforts toward refugee resettlement. While I’ve set the minimum buy at $5 on my Bandcamp page, please feel free to donate more if you can. It really makes a difference.

BBE Music presents the fourth release in their acclaimed J Jazz Masterclass Series: Topology by Makoto Terashita and Harold Land. Originally released in 1983 on the cult Aketa’s Disk label, Topology captures a surprising yet fascinating and engaging collaboration between a young Japanese jazz pianist and an elder American statesman of jazz.

Reissued by BBE Music for the first time since original release 36 years ago, Topology showcases the extraordinary compositional and playing skill of Makoto Terashita, the young pianist responsible for five of the album’s six tracks, alongside the confident and seasoned tones of Harold Land, respected US veteran sax player and former colleague of some of the leading jazz artists of the 50s, 60s and 70s including Max Roach, Clifford Brown, Gerald Wilson and Bobby Hutcherson.

By the time he came to record with Terashita in 1983, Land was in his mid-50s and had numerous album credits under his belt, including some twelve albums as leader. In contrast, Terashita was in his early 30s with just one album to his name, his stunning 1978 debut Great Harvest. Notwithstanding the apparent disparity in experience, the creative relationship they fostered is audibly evident in the wonderful music that was captured during the recording session.

Topology kicks off with ‘Dragon Dance’, an epic spiritual jazz tour de force elegantly ushered in by an extended solo piano introduction from Terashita. This track was chosen to open volume 2 of BBE’s universally praised ‘J Jazz’ compilation. The energy and impact of tracks like ‘Dragon Dance’ and the powerful bop of ‘Crossing’- both Terashitsa-penned numbers – is balanced by more nuanced and reflective tracks like Land’s own composition ‘World Peace’. In total, Topology presents the listener with a complete experience of two musicians from different generations and countries united in musical spirit.

A long out of print rarity known only to a handful of Japanese jazz collectors, Topology is now available once more, reissued for the first time as a 45rpm double 180g LP, featuring exact reproductions of the original artwork, obi strip and insert. It also comes with the original notes fully translated plus a new extended 3700 word essay by Tony Higgins. Topology is also available as a CD and across digital formats.

The J Jazz Masterclass Series is personally curated by Tony Higgins and Mike Peden and is dedicated to presenting the very finest in Japanese jazz. The series features rare and unreleased material presented in the highest quality reproductions of the original releases, fully licensed and authorised.

Makoto Terashita Meets Harold Land - World Peace

'Mantra Moderne' is a stunning, contemporary masterpiece that fuses Anatolian Psychedelia, Brazilian Tropicalia, 60’s European pop and American jazz. A must for fans of Khruangbin, Portishead, Arthur Verocai, Goat, Caetano Veloso, Tom Zé, Os Mutantes, Cortex and co.

The duo is formed of Kit Martin, who lives between London and France and plays all instruments on the album, and Merve Erdem, vocalist and multi-disciplinary artist from Istanbul, now based in London. This is their debut album.

The album explores universal themes such as love, loss, decay, language and ideology, mixing three different languages: English, Turkish and French. Written and recorded by the duo - Kit composed all the songs and Merve wrote the lyrics - in rural France during 2018, each song was completed within a 12-hour window, pawning contemplation for spontaneity.

Dubbed by Kit and Merve as ‘lo-fi-hi-fi’ in reference to the high-end tube equipment that helped it find its way to 8-track cassette tape. The style owes its sound to narrow tape width, valve distortion, spring reverb, the mixture of high end gear with lo-fi equipment as well as a disregard to the norms of hi-fi studio techniques. All instruments were analogue and no samples were used. The instruments that are used range from tablas to darbukas, balalaikas to ouds, MS20 synths to Farfisa organs and a lot of cuica. The mixing techniques were done on-the-fly, tracking immediately to tape: compression, EQ, delay and reverb; meaning mixing could not be revisited!

The deluxe edition of ‘Mantra Moderne’ features two previously unreleased tracks - ‘Kozmos' and 'Rain (باران)’. It also includes remixes of album tracks from Baris K, Halal Cool J, and Natureboy Flako (who also contributes an unreleased cover version of ‘Senden Baska’).

Forthcoming from L'Eclair, "Carousel", a modern funk instrumental blending minimal synth sequences with an unconventional post-punk groove, climaxing to maximum dancefloor impact.

"Carousel" is the latest single to be lifted from their fantastic "нощта" ("Noshtta") EP, set for release 22nd May on the ever on-point Les Disques Bongo Joe, capping a busy few months for the group. Recently the band opened up for The Cinematic Orchestra at the Brixton Academy, released a collaborative 7"single with fellow tropicalfuturists The Mauskovic Dance Band and performed a live session for KEXP while at Les Transmusicales Festival. 

Since their debut LP "Cruise Control" in 2017, the band has been shaping its own vision of instrumental music, drawing inspiration from the past and the future and fearlessly blending genres. Their 2018 sophomore album “Polymood” was a hi-fi-but-crunchy studio adventure with the well-known record engineer/wizard Jasper Geluk (Altin Gün, Mauskovic Dance Band) while "Sauropoda", released in 2019 on Bongo Joe, was more of a DIY attempt to recreate the band’s live percussion-heavy organic house jams.
