Not content with already liberating over twenty dedicated global horror and thriller soundtracks as part of the labels expansive discography, Finders Keepers Records resurrect their ghostly Finders Kreepers imprint, an apparition last spotted back in 2009 with the archival Willow's Songs which exposed the original twisted folk music that inspired the seminal 1972 Wicker Man score. With an unwaning appetite for the rare and obscure side of the genre the labels next short series combines ten vintage recordings from the formative years or International horror introducing a host of bygone soundtrack musicians that combined folklore, musique concrète, early electronics, childlike vocals and flamboyant orchestras to accompany the surreal and hallucinogenic films that inaugurated and inspired the golden age of macabre fantastique cinema.

Sourcing a cross section of obscure global domestic pressings and under the radar vintage vinyl runs this Finders Kreepers reissue series combines a cross section of the rare/unknown and the seminal, bringing unobtainable sonic gems of both classic and uber-classic shock cinema to a discerning new generation of collectors.  A haunting lullaby that needs little introduction. Previously obscured beneath gruff narration within the grooves on a collectible patchwork vinyl audiobook of the film, this musical highpoint of Walter Schuman’s The Night Of The Hunter score finds a dedicated and undisturbed home as part of the Finders Kreepers catalog (amongst its distant doppelganger O Willow Waly lullaby found on our previous theme to The Innocents). Originally sung by the five-year-old actress Sally Jane Bruce but stylistically overdubbed by teenage actress Betty Benson (reverse echoing similar vocal dubbing tales from The Wicker Man’s production log) the high pitched fragility of this immaculate piece of haunting cinematic song has left an indelible sonic memory in the minds of discerning thriller fans which remain synonymous with recycled Sunday afternoon television schedules and the spooked-out aerial shots of composite rabbits, toad and Lotte Reinigner like scenery. This lament of the two riverboat runaways fleeing from the house where the submerged dead body of their murdered mother sways in the reeds still stands up as one of the most haunting and painstakingly pensive pieces of lyrical film music and has since provided direct influence on adaptations and interpolation by Stella Vander (Magma) members of Stereolab, Goldfrapp and Jane Weaver while the film itself (with its roots in purported factual events) continues to inspire the likes of David Lynch, Jim Jarmusch and Rob Zombie.

Before disappearing into relative obscurity this pastoral Swedish/French witch flick benefitted some active global distribution in the 60s due to the stunning lead actress Marina Vlady. A tale of unrequited love, sorcery and persecution this cinematic poem relies on hallucinogenic dream scenes and a paranoia plot to convey a similar tale to that of Eiichi Yamamoto's Belladonna of Sadness. With a shimmering organ and acoustic guitar Norbert Glanzberg score which follows the blonde witch as she rows her boat through twilight lakes and echoing caves while living off the land this unknown soundtrack would not be out of place in a haunted Kubrick ballroom or a Lynchian cabaret club. Scaling the outskirts of the classical horror genre La Sorcierre is more of a supernatural story with a horrific conclusion complete with a shimmering haunting score previously only available on a bizarre Israeli exclusive vinyl EP which has always been hard to track down for those who have literally fallen under the spell of the film.

It' s a difficult exercise to work with raw materials. But maybe the most gratifying too!
I tried to keep the 60 hz as a tonality, it's close to a "B"(http://www.sengpielaudio.com/calculator-notenames.htm) and used the 5 drones to make beats and melody with gates, filters, arpeggiators (set to Bmin) and lfo's in Ableton. 
Every filter's cut off and eq's frequencies are set to multiples of 6, and the bpm is…60:)

Happy new year! This week’s project is as follows:

Step 1: Please record the sound of an ice cube rattling in a glass, and make something of it.

Step 2: Upload the finished track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud.

Background: Longtime participants in, and observers of, the Disquiet Junto series will recognize this single-sentence assignment as the very first Disquiet Junto project, the same one that launched the series on the first Thursday of 2012. Revisiting it a year and two years later, on the first Thursdays of 2013 and 2014, provided a fitting way to begin the new year. Now, at the start of the fourth year of the Disquiet Junto, it is a tradition. A weekly project series can come to overemphasize novelty, and it’s helpful to revisit old projects as much as it is to engage with new ones. Also, by its very nature, the Disquiet Junto suggests itself as a fast pace: a four-day production window, a weekly habit. It’s beneficial to step back and see things from a longer perspective.

Recorded my track in the morning at the hotel, streamed the basic track from my phone to my little bluetooth speakers, than i walked outside the room till the connecting failed, recorded the speakers in the room only with iPad micros.
Than i worked it out in cubasis.

Disquiet Junto Project 0378: Blue(tooth) Haze

The Assignment: Experiment with the sonic qualities of a failing signal.

Step 1: Find some sort of Bluetooth-enabled audio connection that is available to you. It might be headphones or microphone or other devices. The important thing is that audio can be sent to one device from another device by Bluetooth.

Step 2: Experiment with a sound sent via Bluetooth using the connection decided upon in Step 1. Work to find situations in which Bluetooth begins to fail, where the sonic signature of that signal failure becomes apparent. This will likely be due to distance, but you may find other creative approaches to achieve the distortion.

Step 3: Use the situation(s) located in Step 2 as the basis for an original piece of music, stressing an audio signal and then recording the way that signal distorts due to the failure of Bluetooth.

Process: I was hoping to get some nice break up from the Bluetooth receiver, but it worked strictly binary - either giving a clean signal, or silence. However, messing with the clock while recording produced some useful glitches and groans. Added random field recordings for story content - Most notably noise from the freezer and me boiling some eggs. 

Signal paths:

iPhone to Heritage Audio BT-500 for all glitch and source recordings. 

Telecaster through G-Force into SRV-330 and SPX990 for harmonic bits.

Portastudio 05 into RE-150 and RE-201 in series for dialogue.

Song created on iOS using Addictive Synth and Enso loopers. I played the song from my phone over a bluetooth speaker in the back of the house and then walked until I could hear it breaking up. Recorded on a DR-40 field recorder in the backyard for more ambience (and wind apparently).

Sunrise, As Her Eyes Awaken (disquiet0378)

The concept of Transhumanism was first introduced in 1990 by Max More, who optimistically suggested that human capability would soon be augmented by our embrace of augmentative technologies. He wasn’t wrong; examples are all around us in the form of genetic engineering, artificial intelligence and biometric nanotechnology. A more common example might be the way hearing aids and cochlear implants enhance humans’ ability to interpret sounds.

“We favor morphological freedom,” said More. “[We support] the right to modify and enhance one’s body, cognition and emotions.” Suss Müsik agrees. There are, however, ethical and social considerations. If a computer is not yet able to interpret context, then how can it be trusted to accurately convey an emotion? At what point should a machine be permitted to redefine the trust we place in our own senses? While a hearing aid provides wonderful benefits, it also somewhat distorts our concept of auditory range. If a tree falls in the forest and we can’t hear it without a device, can we honestly say that it made a sound? Riddle that awhile.

These are weighty topics, and Suss Müsik hasn’t even mentioned yet how our studio’s Bluetooth UE ROLL speaker (ironically nicknamed “Ultimate Ears”) tends to stutter when a connected device is moved out of range. This was the basis for this week’s Junto. For this piece, two ambient fields were performed and recorded through the UE ROLL straight to disk. The recordings were then sped up to create a base rhythm. Woodwinds, strings, percussion and piano were added afterward.

The vocal is Apple’s “Samantha” VoiceOver reciting an email created by Google’s Natural Language API. The vocal was recorded twice, each through a separate Moog synth module, then patched through a glitch filter at the same rate as the Bluetooth-derived tempo.

The piece is titled Exhumanism. The Creative Commons image is of a British gutta-percha hearing aid made sometime between 1840 and 1910. Thank you to artist and collaborator H. Bean for providing the text, which appears below:
