I was alive during 9/11. The next day after I wrote this song. 

My grandpa was a World War II veteran, and I used to talk with him when I was little about the war and ask him questions. He had a lot of opinions about his experiences and what our country meant to him.  I think he opened up to a child more than he would've to an adult. He was an infantry soldier who fought in the Battle of the Bulge. The first verse of the song opens with me reflecting on my talks with my grandpa. 

How would those who fought for our ideals want or expect their next generations of Americans to honor the legacy of what they fought for?  What responsibility do we present Americans have to those who sacrificed? These are the questions I grappled with in the aftermath of 9/11. This is the second verse.

The last verse, I hope, is an inclusive message to all, a call to action for people to put aside their differences, and a reminder that we are all in it together.
