@m1ssjay aka Ioana Boaje is a producer, DJ, and radio host based in Milan, Italy hailing from Bucharest, Romania. Her music and mixes stem from a rich background that also includes heavy metal and other underground guitar-starring genres all the way through reggaeton, grime, and hybrid club.

Recently, another chapter was added to her ‘no genre boundaries' take on dancefloor music, in the form of a collaborative record with the reggaeton/dancehall hero Alejandro Silva aka Merca Bae, called Scatter. The two producers returned with a 3-tracker EP that is a further incursion in the diverse pool of genres surrounding the contemporary club scene.

PAYNOMINDTOUS GUESTMIX#69: Miss Jay

Moving to Colombia from New York really warped my sensibilities as a DJ. I’d been so used to playing sets that in no way mentioned or were restricted by genre while living in NYC, almost to the point of being ridiculous. When I moved to Bogotá, though, I realized people were putting genre names in all the fliers. DJs here stick to those genres religiously, and the audience, in turn, comes to your night expecting to hear certain things. At first I completely rejected this notion, but over time I realized that if you could convince a crowd to accept what you were playing, even though it wasn’t precisely what they came there specifically to hear, you were breaking new ground. 

The need to approach some sort of musical universality was what informed this mix, which wasn’t made with any kind of class consciousness or political message or avant garde intention. If you can get 8 completely random people in a room and make them all dance, regardless of their tastes, you’re a good DJ. My only rules were to play tracks that sound good at 118bpm and don’t think about it that much.

Sometimes music should be ignorant. Or at the very least make us act in ignorant ways. It kinda feels like sometimes DJs are just trying to get really deep with it when someone commissions a mix from them, but sometimes it’s honestly just not that deep. So get your roommate that you have mad tension with or your partner that you feel like is getting sick of you, or your tía that’s been staying with you or your roommate’s boyfriend that ‘hates rap’ or something and turn on some colored lights, gather the cheapest liquor you can find, the loudest speakers you can get your hands on, and perrear denso for 1:05:05.

WRACK aka Noboru Okuda is a DJ and producer based in Tokyo, Japan who's been known for reggaeton, ballroom, and hybrid club productions and sets since 2009, the year in which the project started moving the first steps. As of today, Noboru's mixes have been featured by radios and magazines among which figures NTS, Rinse FM, i-D, and Tank, and his wild DJ sets hosted on stages all over the world (Mexico City, Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, etc). Among the members of the Chemical Monsters crew, he contributed to bringing to his hometown artists such as Imaabs, Lao, Zutzut, Fausto Bahia, Mexican Jihad, Dinamarca and Mechatok (Staycore), B.YHZZ and KRY (Intruder Alert), and many others more.

In the recent past, WRACK appeared with his productions in numerous labels (Club Late Music, Eco Futurism Corporation, Oxyorange, Salviatek), while at the same time confirming his prolificacy thanks to several collaborative projects and remixes (Anakta, AN System, DJ Whey Protein, El Plvybxy, Gunhead, Kelvin T, Lao, Sakura Tsuruta, Shyqa, Wasted Fates). 2019 has arguably been the most fruitful for Noboru Okuda: in August, he joined the NAAFI's roster and released Despertar 醒 EP, sealing memorable years of collaborations with the CDMX finest posse; then, on December 20th, his mixtape 10 Years was published by Hong Kong's Absurd Trax, with the intent of celebrating a ten-years-long career with a record that could reportedly "harness and concentrate the euphoria and the emotional impact of the last decade", all in one cathartic outing.

We're glad to present the 70th mix in our GUESTMIX series WRACK recorded a few days ago, coming with a tasty tracklist of almost 15 tunes by the likes of local and international producers of the caliber of Aggromance, DJ Kalpis, Florentino, Merca Bae, Omaar, and Ynfynyt Scroll, also including three unreleased compositions by Noburu himself.
