Mumdance / Primavera Sound 2022 / Four Decks / Ninety Minutes

https://soundcloud.com/wearekiarascuro is the moniker of friends Rosie Ama and Nadia. Formerly under ATLAS Radio, the pair have hosted regular shows on Reprezent Radio and Worldwide FM, where they showcased their tastes for varying genres and sounds from across the globe, and invited guests like Gilles Peterson and Mehmet Aslan to join them. Their new regular slot on South London's Balamii Radio sees them playing the darker and weirder side of their collections, and has helped land them a residency at Peckham's newest music venue, Ghost Notes, alongside some fellow DJ Directory members.

"This mix is full of songs that excite us at the moment. From the wavey guitar sounds at the beginning to the heavy EBM techno at the end, we wanted to show the breadth of our sets and how heavy we can go when the time is right! There are some unreleased bits in there from Blind Delon, Desert Sound Colony, Tin Man and our homeboy Jake AKA Pris."

Kiara Scuro - DJ Directory Mix

Michael Upson has been at the forefront of the DIY party scene in Leeds for the last decade, most recently founding the pumping gay dance party: Love Muscle. Starting just over two years ago in response to the generally dire state of queer night-life in Leeds, Love Muscle aims to provide an inclusive space for the LGBTQ population of the city with a slightly more discerning music taste. "We want to make people feel good about themselves and to celebrate their sexuality through the music that's ultimately a part of their history." The night also operates a strict no photography and safer spaces policy to allow people to truly explore who they want to be uninhibited. 

Love Muscle and its subsequent radio show on KMAH has provided a platform for him to bring some of the finest underground queer talents in electronic music to the city.

Michael Upson - DJ Directory Mix

York has never had a reputation for being a party town. However, tucked away just within the historic city walls lies Bar Lane Studios, where Sam Jefferies divulges his passion as a painter by day and a DJ by night under the guise of Yuri.

Now living in Leeds, Sam is fast establishing a reputation for having a musical knowledge beyond his years and a record collection that could outmatch selectors well into their 30s. In this exclusive 6 hour recording for our DJ Directory series, we get a glimpse into this vast collection from hip-hop, funk and soul to house, electro, disco and beyond.

Yuri - DJ Directory Mix

Danielle is a DJ and Illustrator from London, currently based in Bristol, who, over the last couple of years has had the chance to play at some of the city’s best parties including Timedance, Livity Sound and Young Echo, as well as some of the world’s best clubs such as Corsica Studios, Sub Club and Griessmeule. 

Her sets feature an impressive range of genres from deep house to leftfield, electro, new-wave, UK techno and beyond. She draws from an informed selection of old school house cuts, whilst keeping up to date with the newest dance music as it’s released. This is thanks to a musical education that continues to expand with her 9 years (and counting) of work at the internationally-renowned Phonica Records. In addition to hosting regular NTS shows, she is a resident alongside fellow directory member Daisy Moon at BRSTL (a monthly club night showcasing Bristol-based talent) and is one of the mentors at the increasingly popular Bristol-based DJ workshop ‘Mix Nights’.

Danielle - DJ Directory Mix

Bristol-based DJ https://soundcloud.com/official-sam_hall returned to Dimensions Festival in 2018 with a bag bursting with gems. His sets consist of a variety of house and techno with influences taken from late 80’s and 90’s records and DJ’s from Chicago, Detroit and the UK. Recorded live in the Ballroom, this set is a clear example of his passion for classic records and his eye for a foot-stomping modern release.

Sam Hall - DJ Directory Live 2018

Belgrade-born and Dusseldorf-based, https://soundcloud.com/vladimir is a singular DJ with no distinctive sound. Renowned for consistently pushing and exploring the boundaries of DJing, he enjoys finding unusual “frequencies, silence, and gaps” by playing records at the wrong speed, most influentially - giving 90’s trance a dark and EBM-influenced feel by slowing them down. Sharing music to provoke an emotive reaction, Ivkovic reaches for genres not usually heard on the dancefloor: “If you can make someone cry, maybe by accident, with a selection of music, it's a beautiful thing.”

Having finessed his skills at the world-famous Salon Des Amateurs alongside Lena Wilikens and Jan Schulte, Ivkovic now also runs Offen Music, a label specialised in authentic subjectivism.

This expansive offering for our series leans more towards a soundtrack than a club mix; a hypnotic meander through sound-scapes, samples and the consistently creative selections we've all come to embrace with Vladimir.

Through a series of consistent releases on the likes of Voyage, Cabinet, Secretsundaze and his own @smallhoursberlin and The Brane imprint, Berlin-based Youandewan has built up a respected reputation for his deep, delicate yet propulsive take on the house sound.

As a DJ, his record bag is stuffed with a host of influences that seep into his productions: from UK tech house, tender deep house and minimal sounds. Currently Berlin-based, he’s matured his selective style with in-demand appearances at institutions worldwide.

With just 5 weeks to go until he appears at Dimensions 2019 along with a bunch of his usual accomplices (The Ghost, Gene on Earth and Hamish & Toby), we’re delighted to welcome Youandewan to our mix series; with a 90-minute transmission of club-focused grooves, acid-tinged cruisers and sure-fire head-boppers.

We're on a voyage with Huerta this week as he joins our series with mix #198. Laden with effortlessly cool house cuts, smooth vocals and bouncy bass rhythms, it's full of zesty energy that longs for the sun-kissed dance-floors the summer promises. Laced throughout the mix are unreleased gems from the man himself; a passionate producer whose more club-focussed releases on labels such as Small Hours and Slow Life have been lighting-up your favourite dance-floors for some time.

With his latest 'Junipero' LP, released on Voyage in January, he shines light on a more explorative sound, piecing together ambient, synth-infused sounds, paying tribute to the Californian coast.

We await Huerta's return to Dimensions this summer as we get together for the Tisno throw-down alongside pals The Ghost, Sugar Free, Youandewan, Vera, Gene On Earth and more!

Tiffany has conjured something truly distinctive for our series this week with an expertly crafted mix that transcends genres; wielding bass-heavy, psychedelic electronic jams that simultaneously nod to the history of dance music while propelling us through sounds of the future and exploring realms unknown. Frenzied grooves and razor-sharp rhythms are the driving force and produce a style that's full of raw energy, at times euphoric and uplifting and at others dark, hypnotic and evocative.

Amongst a multiplicity of guises (DJ Zozi and Ambien Baby), D. Tiffany recently revealed a new collaboration with Ciel as Psychedelic Budz, the long-time friends have created the enchanting 'Faerie Stomp' EP - landing today on Planet Euphorique, the label D. Tiffany runs, repping talent from her intimate circle of co-creators.

While we wait in great anticipation of witnessing this splendor live at the festival - this session goes a long way to filling the void, enjoy.

This week's addition to our mix series is a four hour excursion through a plethora of sonic realms. Notorious on-site at Dimensions for his marathon B2B's with Mark ‘Turbo’ Turner, you'll find hi-tech soul, booty, electro and some three-deck wizardry scattered throughout.

Tony Neptune is a multi-media persona created by the Leeds-based artist and producer Sam Jefferies who, inspired by the narrative and musical legacies of early Detroit techno culture, aims to tell a complete story for the senses through a combination of image, sound and text. For anyone who's caught a Tony Neptune set, either online or offline, you'll know the Leeds DJ, producer and Dimensions DJ Directory member doesn't do things in half measures. 

As both Tony and his other alias Yuri - a tip of the hat to Yuri Gagarin, the first human to journey into outer space - he's no stranger to 6-hour long mixes, sometimes immortalised in his lengthy back-to-backs with fellow Leeds DJ Mark 'Turbo' Turner. 

Last month he shared his first productions with the world; a debut EP titled Reflections on a Daring Escape that moves through emotive electro and further serves as a vehicle for Neptune to tell a story for the senses, by combining his own visual paintings with the music. 

In typical fashion for his Shine A Light On mix he delivers a live recording from his three hour set at Gut Level, a party in Sheffield, just before lockdown commenced. A journey through everything from oddball wave to slow industrial, EBM, new wave and electro, the mix picks up the pace continuing to build until its climax...
