“Zooming In” is a mix series focusing on African countries that the world seldom hears from and listens to.

Burundi is a tiny country in Central Africa with close historical ties with neighbouring Rwanda. Even though African music of the past four decades is being reissued by foreign labels at an accelerating speed, Burundi remains a blind spot. 

In the 70's, Burundi was known for it's percussive patterns, albeit in a familiar story of cultural theft and appropriation: traditional drumming from Tambourinaires de Bukirasazi recorded in 1967 by anthropologists was sampled in the 1971 hit "Burundi Black" by French pianist Michel Bernholc… which got sampled again to become the "Burundi Beat" used by English pop bands Adam and the Ants and Bow Wow Wow in the early 80’s. Members of Tambourinaires toured as the Royal Drummers of Burundi in the 80's and were for a time one of Africa’s most popular traditional acts on the world stage. It’s one of the rare instances where artists who got ripped off were ultimately able to build a career with their own art, performing on ingoma royal drums made from tree trunks and played partly while balancing on the players' heads. 

The country, which has long been suffering from inter-ethnic conflicts, political instabilty and poverty, has a rich cultural identity, though little of it can be found online. War turns archives into ashes, and one has to roam the digital halls of YouTube to find the remnants of its musical history. What is left of classic songs from local legends are now shoddy mislabeled mp3 uploads. One could almost surmise, the worse the sound quality of those uploads, the more the people of that country have suffered.

Like elsewhere on the continent, there is a music industry building around local iterations of Afrobeats, Amapiano, Hip-Hop, Dancehall and Christian music. What caught my attention over two years of online research was pop music rooted in tradition, featuring regional instruments such as "umuduri" (musical bow like Brazil’s berimbau), "umwironge" (flute usually made from the stem of a plant) and "inanga" (stringed zither). Beyond its own unique instruments, the country also hosts many female choirs. Burundian musical tradition is based in collective vocal performances with various harmonized styles. Organized in so-called "cultural clubs" which emerged after the genocidal massacres of 1993, these giant choirs meet to sing and dance as a way for the youth not only to simply socialize, but also to bring together and heal the wounds of ethnic groups who were previously locked in deadly conflict. According to scholars, their songs are reminiscent of the ancestral art of speech and eloquence called "ijambo" and contain gorgeous pastoral poetry.
