James Whipple returns from a long period of musical dormancy with his first full length LP for PAN since 2017.

As M.E.S.H., he honed a singular and unpredictable sonic identity on his debut album Piteous Gate. Re-emerging as Hesaitix, the now-familiar motifs have become streamlined, the sound palette both more refined and more elaborate. Even at its most abstract, there is an uncanny presence permeating the record, a convincing emotional reality with its own narrative and spatial logic.

Opener ‘Cusp of Unknowing’ announces itself with crushing low end synths feathered with delicate chimes before dissolving into the oceanic din of a data center. Rolling, engine-like subs mark the start of ‘Taurian Shade,’ a low- tempo percussive drive past iced-over chords and angular synth lines. ‘Geflatnet’ and ‘Volunteer’ dip into grooves bordering on nostalgic, referencing a misremembered golden era of electronica long-players. On ‘Santarosae (Black Dolphin),’ a sense of primordial awe comes to the fore, while ‘Black Line,’ originally presented as an audio installation in 2022, uses the human voice to explore a narrative approach to sound. ‘Noctian Airgap’ and ‘Anticrime’ return to syncopation and its complex moods, while ‘Subdermal’ and ‘Hypersea’ embrace repetition in service to atmosphere.

Following a number of key contributions to Eastern Nurseries compilations, Romance Relic returns to the fold with their latest EP, “Hundred Petals of Suffocation”.

Expanding on minute moments of daily life, Romance Relic’s delicate layering of field recordings, melancholic clarinet passages and vlog samples is interspersed with juxtaposing bursts of SFX across the EP’s 6 tracks. Capturing beauty in the mundane, “Hundred Petals of Suffocation” seeks to emphasise the allure of imperfection, gesturing toward a corporeality of the sonic palette.

Respecting the limitations of one’s own body sits at the core of Jussi’s compositional ethos, where value is placed on striking a balance between the intended and the possible, culminating in a tender and deeply affecting sensibility.

Kin Teal (Bálint Haller) is a Budapest-based producer who makes organic and tactile music that’s rooted in club culture. So far, he has released two EPs (via London-based Tropopause Records and New York-based Human Pitch respectively), and his latest drop (‘Undercurrent’) was a single on Scuffed Recordings. The main aim of his project is to express the contrast and connection between nature and humanity through juxtaposing natural textures with machine-made ones, and this sensibility is ever so evident on ‘circadian’, his latest offering.  

The five-track EP is tightly packed with unformalized and unpredictable bass music – as per Kin Teal’s ars poetica, heavily digital sounds are carefully intertwined with natural elements. ‘circadian’ is a polished, if not totally pristine body of work: the playfully raw, broken beats carry artifacts of living organisms. The human voice is a central element here; whether chopped and scattered or looped and ethereal, these vocal samples are what make the material really breathe. ‘circadian’ is peak body clock music condensed into 18-minute cycles.
