On this fourth Thursday of November, you might ask yourself: do Indians celebrate Thanksgiving? Well… Thanksgiving is a complicated holiday for Native people. In a way, each day is a day of thanksgiving to the Creator for the original people of Turtle Island. This doesn't mean that we don't enjoy turkey, pie and family as much as the next person, but at the same time the Thanksgiving myth largely shared in mainstream culture perpetuates a one sided view of a complicated history surrounding this holiday. It’s a shoutout to all Indigenous people: our cultures are intact, our medicines strong and our communities growing.

The track, produced by Sim Seezy (@seezybeats), and joined by the lyrics of Chhoti Maa (@ChhotiMaa), illuminates and mobilizes neo-native narratives from all directions of Turtle Island. From New York to California, Mexico to Canada…We are not sleeping. We haven’t forgotten our herstory. America’s past haunts us today and deserves a call out.

This song by Mary Black and Gabriel Guiboche is dedicate to the memory and call for justice of Colten Bouchie, Azraya Kokopenace, and Delaine Copenace and all Missing & Murdered Indienous People worldwide. 

It also has personal experiences tied into the lyrics with the mistreatment and inequality met by the indigenous population in Canada when it comes to them being endangered and targeted. If you didn't know, the indigenous population is constantly facing discrimination and even within the Canadian justice system and all over the world. People murder the indigenous and most of the time get away with it or serve an insignificant sentence after being released. The indigenous population faces injustice at an alarming rate and this song embodies such experiences and emotions that follow from it.
