The final mix of an epic jam session done while the rain hammered on my roof on a Bank Holiday Monday.  

Really this is a remix of a remix. After getting the stems for this I knew right off that I wanted to do a version with lots of attention on the arpeggio. Pretty soon I had a nice evolving process for the arp and some moody bass and pads pulled out of the other stems. 

Jamming it had a good moody vibe but I just couldn't find an arrangement that allowed the arpeggio to evolve the way I wanted it to. So the remix got abandoned.

Then on a rainy bank holiday weekend I was thinking about the super long remixes of the early 90's and came back to it this time with my drone head on. Running the remixed stems into my drone setup I finally found a way to let the arp evolve the way I wanted. 

Mostly this arrangement was laid down in that single long Jam session but then I went back and tightened up the last ten minutes of it and laboured a good while over the EQ and balance.

Decoded Sundays - Echaskech

When I was touring in Mexico, I was lucky enough to have some days off during a visit to Mexico City, and took a trip to a nearby Toltec/Aztec Pyramid site called Teotihuacan. It's a beautiful place, but when I asked about its history I was told that most of the knowledge and culture of the people who built it was lost, with the arrival of the Europeans. Now it's turned into a rebuilt money making tourist trap, with the loss of its real meaning.

I recorded the space and sounds there with binaural mics, so I could try and capture some of the feeling of it, including a storm which came in, and then I wrote a strings part inspired by the feelings of the visit there. Tom Hodge brought the piece to life by playing a piano part in addition, and I loved the piano so much I decided to make two parts, the first with the piano only, combined with the binaural recordings and a randomising delay feedback network, and the second part with the strings. The first part of Teotihuacan is available exclusively from the free download Quotient Series, and the second part will be coming on the Artefact EP in April.

I suppose "Dark Ambient" is about right for this piece of gloomy hopelessness. This track was either something I had been trying to write, or something that had been trying to escape for 3 years. Either way, it had to happen, eventually.  

This track is available on the latest (volume 6) of the always excellent compilations from Ambient Online. This volume features 114 tracks and a running order of over 18 hours. At only $9.99 this represents astounding value for money. 

The mastering on here probably differs slightly from the version on the compilation

The Nothing was originally released on 12" vinyl as part of the Buried in Time 'Habituation EP'. There were only 200 copies pressed and my track will most likely not be available digitally for some time, if at all.
