Nikki Nair - Socket [DIRTYBIRD]

Chinese whispers had quickly become gospel here; truth and deception were entangled — now everybody spread information with caution and took everything they heard with a pinch of salt. The town were incredibly suspicious, with very little trust from neighbourhood to neighbourhood, instead a venomous tension coursed through the streets, leaving something of a bitter taste in people's mouths.

The brainchild of DJ and production duo Sicaria Sound, Cutcross Recordings was born into the world last year as a platform to push forward-thinking bass-centric sounds moving around the 140bpm mark. Their next release comes in the form of a themed compilation, 'With The Pulse', the second instalment following last year's 'With The Fracture' VA that featured music from L U C Y (now LCY), Unknown Artist, Sir Rah and E3 Breaks. While last year's honed in on music for the rave, this four-tracker—complete with music from Conzi, Jamiu, Zygos and Ehua—celebrates percussive-driven sounds to get your body moving.

Introducing Cutcross, created to champion the melting pot of bass-centric sounds teetering around 140 BPM. Heading up the concept is @sicariasound, a DJ duo who since their inception set out to explore and expand on the possibilities of these sounds whilst spotlighting underground artists. Cutcross is therefore their next step in supporting the forward-thinking music that they’ve drawn for when curating sets.

Partners in crime @ebb-nz & @texture_wav by way of New Zealand are at the helm of CXT004. With a heavyweight solo track each - longtime Sicaria Sound set staple ‘5 Skin’ by Ebb alongside Texture’s formidable ‘No Mercy’ - the flip of the record then introduces two fierce collaborative efforts via low-end driven, lively breaks.

The Rabbit, according to the Chinese lunar calendar, symbolizes longevity, peace, and most suitable for the Unchained trajectory, creativity.  

Each year we set out to collate a mélange of ambiguous club-ready electronic whilst doing our part to cross that apparent divide between drum ‘n’ bass, jungle, footwork, grime and other members of the extended bass family.

We haven’t always been wed to the massive banger alone, but we have to admit, we always will be obsessed. We don’t consider ourselves possessed by sonic slabs that are looped beyond recognition, but we hold them in high regard just the same. 

So with that in mind, curating the Year of the Rabbit compilation took some time this year.

The Year Of The Rabbit showcases artists both emerging and established from China, Russia, England, Holland, and the United States. Be it wonky, divergent, mutant, deep, or simply in the vein of the pure epic club banger, every producer has something remarkable and distinctive going on.

We introduce and welcome back our 2023 Year of the Rabbit artist crew: Subp Yao, Radiax, Lakeway, Danky, Neve, Harka, Doctor Jeep, Leo Cap, Kray, Trophy, Airstrike, Throe, Pllfry and Dynamic Stab.

My 6th beat tape. The big one. I put an insane amount of heart and soul in to this. A ridiculous amount of time. I worked so hard on this one to make sure every track had it's place. It's lengthy, but I believe it's my best work by far. I hope you all enjoy it.

Pev re-masters and re-issues a lead track from his debut LP 'Jarvik Mindstate' on Punch Drunk alongside a newly unearthed and previously unreleased track from 2008.

A leading protagonist of a nascent, more techno indebted sound in the 07/08 dubstep era, alongside peers such as Martyn, 2562 & Appleblim, Peverelist released a series of tracks that helped shape and define that scene. Alongside 'Infinity is Now' (Tectonic), Circling (w/ Appleblim – Skull Disco) and 'The Grind on Punch Drunk to name a few, Bluez was a standout track fusing melancholic Detroit style synths with the dub-wise aesthetics of the UK underground. Peverelist has since explored these themes further with his pioneering Livity Sound label. This release revisits the roots of his sound a decade on.

You know Dirtybird for dropping basslines and creating smiles on the dance floor since January 2005.

The fun family vibe of the Dirtybird label can be traced back to a free event started in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. This new kind of house music went against the smooth vocal house that was popular at the time and derived its influences mostly from hip-hop, drum n bass, and American funk. The free outdoor BBQ party was very rough around the edges but eventually became legendary amongst the people of San Francisco. This event was also a very influential factor in the decision by Claude VonStroke to start the record label in 2005.

Today, Dirtybird has offices in San Francisco and Los Angeles and has expanded into events and tour production. As it grows, the brand continues to expand beyond music into merchandise, licensing and artist management. In 2015, Dirtybird launched the inaugural Dirtybird Campout festival, which has been dubbed “Summer Camp For Adults”, and Dirtybird has been recognized from their achievements by being awarded "Underground Label of the Year" at the International Dance Music Awards, “Label of the Decade” by Mixmag, “Best North American Label” by DJ Mag, and Billboard’s "Top 5 Independent Dance Labels".
