Dirty Epic welcomes aboard @materielle_music B2B @marienyx for our 122nd episode of Amplify Series.

Materielle is a Los Angeles-based techno artist whose deep, dub-driven sound draws heavily
from the rhythmic syncopations and atmospheric textures of 90s Detroit techno. Fusing
elements of heavy, hypnotic basslines with intricate patterns and immersive reverb, Materielle’s
music taps into the raw energy and experimental edge of underground techno, with an
emphasis on subtle detail and emotional depth.

A self-taught producer with a decade-long career in music technology, Materielle has cultivated
a distinctive sonic palette shaped by the teachings of pioneering artists like Rødhåd, Ben Klock,
Claudio PRC, and Richie Hawtin. The project’s name, Materielle, is inspired by the delicate art
of weaving—an analogy for the artist's approach to music, where sound is crafted through
layers and textures, much like fabrics are woven together to create something new.

Since 2019, Materielle has honed her craft as a DJ, transitioning seamlessly into production with her track singles, Satin and Organza on Delusional Records and the release of her debut EP, Fabrique on Northern Parallels. The EP, which features the tracks Nylon and Neoprene, with
remixes from Mike Derer and Raytek, has garnered attention for its unique blend of hypnotic
grooves and emotionally charged atmospherics. Materielle’s recent release, a remix of Orly
Gal’s track, The Man Without a Face, was chosen by Beatport for their November 2024 Techno
Shortlist (peak/driving), further solidifying her growing presence in the techno scene. In early
2025, she contributed the track Kevlar to the Synthetik Minds VA Compilation, a benefit release
supporting Los Angeles fire relief efforts. The compilation features a lineup of major artists from across the global techno scene, underscoring Materielle’s commitment to both artistic
collaboration and community impact. Fall of 2025 she releases her next single “Chiffon” on the
forthcoming Split Checks Records VA Compilation.

Marie Nyx is a Los Angeles–based DJ, producer, and label head whose sound bridges electro, techno, and experimental electronica with roots in post-punk, new wave, and darkwave. She has brought her infectious, high-energy style to stages at HARD Summer, CRSSD Festival, Insomniac events, and prominent underground institutions like The Lot Radio. With releases on Delusional Records, Boysnoize Records, Obskur Music, Synthetik Sounds, Hidden Symbols, and Dark Heaven, Marie continues to push boundaries as both an artist and tastemaker. In 2025, she founded Synr, a label dedicated to forward-thinking electro, techno, and experimental sounds, solidifying her place as a driving force in the underground electronic scene.

ACTANT: Can you tell me about your artist name PWCCA?

PWCCA: PWCCA is the Welsh name for a demonic creature or spirit, playful but dangerous. It was my evolution as a musician, a shift from my old AKA to a more defined and technically advanced sound. I also chose it because I like its written aesthetic.

ACTANT: PWCCA was born in 2019, but you produced earlier under the name Dr Cyanide. Can you tell me about the transition between the two?

PWCCA: It was the evolution that arose with the improvement of my production techniques and my ideas, although in reality, and logically, they still have some connection, since they are two AKA to produce the same style of music.

ACTANT: Why do you make music?

PWCCA: For me, it's a way of expression, entertainment and escape, I always wanted to create tools to be able to use in own DJ sets, to be able to listen to my music in the hands of great DJs… although it is true that today in my performances as a DJ, my music is what I use the least, since when I perform in Live format obviously, everything that sounds is mine, but a great motivation long ago was this.

ACTANT: The sound of your productions is  haunting, rough, extremely repetitious. What is the attraction of these sounds for you?

PWCCA: In techno music, I've always loved repetition. In fact, I think it's part of its essence. I like creating dense, dark, and dirty sounds. They particularly immerse me in an intense mental journey. Today, I don't want to give rise to frivolous sounds in my work, at least that's what I try to convey or capture.

ACTANT: As a record label, Hardtools seems to embrace a dark aesthetic, pointing at an interest in death, spirits, ghosts, and so forth. Do these realms hold a power that can be utilised in music?

PWCCA: For me, darkness, death, the universe or all of this that no one knows about, inspires me when creating my sound, I don't like to link my sound or the sound of different artists of the label, with colors or images that are not serious or more "Fun" I think that over time, I have become more strict with those things hehe, it doesn't mean that techno is this, but in my case it is what inspires me the most.

ACTANT: Where do you see techno evolving in the future? Will real, dark techno continue to expand as society continues to erode?

PWCCA: Techno will likely continue to expand because it taps into a collective sense of restlessness. It's a search for refuge, often logically linked to having fun. Many young artists will take over and maintain the essence, while others who seemed authentic will sell out to the highest bidder without flinching. It has always happened and will always continue to happen; it's part of the game.

ACTANT: What makes Spain such a powerful force in techno?

PWCCA: I think there are and have been great techno artists in Spain, influenced by the right sources. Many artists who have forged a unique and remarkable sound, known worldwide, highly influential people like Oscar Mulero, supporting national material. I think the different artists who re-emerge have a great source of inspiration without having to look too far. But only in a few cases is one a prophet in his own land...

ACTANT: Finally, who are your favorite artists and labels right now?

PWCCA: I like listening to old artists like Wünsch, Mulero, Surgeon, Regis, Portion Reform (R&F), Mugon… but today we also have a wave of brutal producers like Kike Pravda, Lakej, Lewis Fautzi, Pyramidal Decode, KØLPØS, Ribé, Endplate, Oliver Rosemann, Stanislav Tolkachev, among many others. There are great Labels like Mord, Semántica, Pole Group or Warm Up, and others, offering great stuff, but I think that a large part of the scene is also supported by labels of less “prestigious” since there are many tracks edited in these, which are used by world-class DJs.
