Photay’s “All That I Need (Remix)” brilliantly sets the tone. Anchored by an irresistibly syncopated percussive line, it accumulates perfectly placed rhythmic layers and accents, then drops in Cesar and sister Sharin Toribio’s sparse vocals amidst touches of haunting modulating organ and Bernie Worrell-esque synth squeals, all while largely dispensing with traditional basslines. It’s an intoxicatingly moody (re-)arrangement, reflective of Photay’s uncanny ability to generate momentum and evoke stillness at once. And it’s reprised in a more stripped down iteration for his lovely Photay Lullaby Remix, which dials back the percussion and plays up a simple thumb piano melody from the song’s beautifully bridge for maximum emotional resonance.

We are excited to kick off our new mix series with a local LA legend and one of the first to every grace the decks at Discotheke in LA, it's none other than FSQ!

FSQ celebrates their tenth anniversary in 2023, with the music project being born out of the epic collaboration between Parliament-Funkadelic and Soul Clap in 2013. This six person team covers soul, funk, disco and house music in their original and remix productions. 

FSQ DJ sets are helmed by the group's leader, Chuck Da Fonk, and extend into some of the funkiest corners of dance music, where you'll hear deep Balearic grooves, rare P-Funk sides, 80s boogie funk, uncommon new wave 12"s, and modern underground house cuts. For this exclusive mix for the Discotheke party, Chuck captures some of the vibe he brought to his last appearance in early 2022. Laced with two hours of funk leaning jams, this mix explores some of the deeper FSQ productions including the group's remix work for Nona Hendryx and Nick Monaco, and FSQ collaborations with European based nu-disco producers Alan Dixon, Colleen Cosmo Murphy, Yam Who?, and Birdee. Classic funk from George Clinton sits alongside New York City disco-not-disco cuts by Kid Creole & The Coconuts and Yello. 80's dance jams by Thomas Dolby and Duran Duran are foisted up against fresh new releases by modern nu-disco artists Midnight Magic, Tigerbalm, and Rheinzand. With so much music in the FSQ record bag, it's always hard to choose what to put into a DJ mix, but the Discotheke party is about dancing, disco vibes, and a persistent groove, which this Chuck Da Fonk selected set certainly delivers over the course of two hours.

Hot on the heels of his last outing for the Delsin house series comes this, another essential new offering from German producer Erdbeerschnitzel. The experienced producer has many skills in his arsenal and this new EP proves that once again. 

The title track 'The Ample Waters' is a joyous and lively concoction that fuses curious melodies with busy little piano stabs and more trilling, sunny melodies. It's busy house for bustling dancefloors and next up, 'Never Tilt' slows things down with jumbled, woody percussion falling over lazy drums and stretched, yawning synth smears. Colourful and effervescent, it's a track that makes you want to shake your limbs. 

'With Level Hopes' is again characterised by melodic colour, with pixelated patterns stretched over a funky, gooey bassline and clacking percussion. There's a beautifully DIY feel to the loosely assembled track that gives it a life all of its own before closer 'Yet Unfulfilled' pairs slo-mo beats with neo-soul vocal snippets, lazy and stoned summer chords. It's the most emotive of the lot, but all four tracks are truly feel good jams that have come just in time for some serious summer action.

FSQ, an acronym for Funk, Style, Quality, is comprised of Chuck "Da Fonk" Fishman, Sa´D "The Hourchild" Ali, Matt “One Era” Coogan, and Chas Bronz. Each member of this quintet derives from a deep musical background.

Chuck Da Fonk toured and recorded with George Clinton & Parliament - Funkadelic in the mid nineties. The Hourchild is equal parts hype-man as he is discographer, having cut his teeth in the nineties servicing Tommy Boy’s record pool. The Hourchild is also George Clinton’s nephew who looked after a young Chuck back in the day.  Philly-based Matt Coogan “One Era” is a talented multi-instrumentalist and producer. Rounding out this diverse crew, Chas Bronz, is most known for his talents behind the decks and on the guitar, as well as a slew of other instruments.

Winter 2014 brought about FSQ’s first release on Soul Clap records, the "Zulu Congo Call” EP. In addition to working on new productions, FSQ continues to remix other artists’ works in their signature style of Northern Soul and Caribbean Disco. 

Description of the Mix:

This is a journey through funk classics, Caribbean dubs, and rare remixes of new wave gems. Some of today's best new sounds creep in. "Sometimes you hear a new track that you know borrows from a classic and they didn't do a sample specifically, but you know it's calling out another funk jam," says FSQ's Sa'd "The Hourchild" Ali, "and FSQ is one of the few DJ teams that is going to be able to hear that and put the pieces together". That's why in this mix you'll find Dirtybird's Justin Jay right along side Philly funkers The Fatback Band, or Nick Monaco nudged up against The Art of Noise. 

We've dropped some exclusives here - like Michael The Lion - who has an EP coming out on Soul Clap Records - and some of our own FSQ remix work for the label. 

Also there's a heavy component that delves into the Caribbean sound, including a rare nugget from the legendary Barbados house band, The Coach House Rhythm Section. 

New wave is a style constant for FSQ. "There are certain new wave songs from my youth I'll always throw in an FSQ set," says Chuck Da Fonk, “...but the great thing is that these songs came out in the 80's with 10 different remixes, so you'll never hear the same version twice. For instance, Yello's "Call It Love" had four different 12" maxi singles, plus a CD maxi single, and cassette single at the time of release and like Pokemon, we had to catch em all."

We're super excited to present this weeks Discobelle exclusive mix, especially since it's coming from longtime friends of ours namely @fsqofficial who in order for us to survive winter brings us a mix that's filled to the bring with sunshine and funk.

"A selection of sunny jams from FSQ (Funk Style Quality) to keep the light and warmth going in the middle of the winter. We added some FSQ track exclusives like "SMDH" and "Vibe Out" which will be on our upcoming album this year, with versions here remixed by LA's Color Vision and NYC's Dopeshoes respectively. 

We also feature some of our FSQ members who turn in their own solo works, like Chas Bronz ("Renegades of the New Age Funk"), Sa'd Ali (who's group, AtomicHeadz delivers a new remix from Thugfucker), and GKoop (who produced most of the new Funkadelic album and offers an unreleased track from it). 

In our mix for Discobelle, we like to flaunt our diversity in styles, and go from 80's smoothed out jams (Style Council, Curiosity Killed The Cat, Thomas Dolby) and head into deep boogie funk cuts (Jimmy Bo Horne, Tara, Cutty), then jump into really new entries from Vanilla Ace, Brother In Arms, Luca C and Brigante, Breach and many others. Some tracks are so hot and new we can't reveal the names yet.

We also like everything coming from Latin America right now so we added some flavor from our favorites, Future Feelings (Mexico) and Schoolbell (Brazil).

Lichtenberg: Name of a district in East Berlin and Johannes Albert’s second LP. Ambient structures over New Wave rhythms via EBM to current rave revivals blend a sense of multidisciplinary art into one medium. After the sublime and welcoming vibes of "Phony Emotions“ we wander into a bit of indie dance room when listening to the meaty bass tones of "Hooligan“. Renowned photographer Gundula Schulze Eldowy (mostly known for her work “Berlin on a dog’s night“) lends her voice to the dark mood of "Milieu“ speaking about life in the city in the 1980s. We  nd a rare moment of happiness dancing to “Wing House“ with a positive arp baseline. Long time producer-pal Iron Curtis comes into the mix now for the uptempo acid tune "Built-In Acceptance“. Bringing back the vast, massive drop in e-music, sure to be a hit at festivals this summer. Carrying on with “Chestnut Poetry“ an ode to 90s Rave with a touch of EBM. Snare Rolls included. "Dong Xuan“ feeds the energy of the infamous Vietnamese center based in the albums namesake by evoking a shattered vocal sample over lofty pads with an engaging acid bassline, however its mostly a follow-up to Johannes’ 2016 anthem "All Things Mind Altering“. Rounding up things with the majestic New Age sound of "Cell“. Another collaboration this time with Moritz Heppner,
aka "Monosoul“. The producer reveals his darker side on Lichtenberg and slows down. Ancient drum machines and synthesizers however play a main role. Throughout this whole journey Johannes still maintains his house music foundation and the album embodies genre  uid styles that depict the motions of the area. Features come vast and great: Gundula Schulze Eldowy, Iron Curtis & Moritz Heppner add to the fold with their musical stylings.

FSQ is a 6 person production team and DJ unit, devoted to the enjoyment of warm summers and the sounds that align with such strong solar vibes. 
This one hour and twelve minute mix by Funk Style Quality aka FSQ is just long enough to get you from Bologna to Marina Di Ravenna beach by car. We selected these tunes specifically to put us in the mindset of such a quick Italian auto jaunt to the Adriatic sea. 

Some of the jams in the mix are from FSQ's upcoming album with Soul Clap Records, titled "Reprise Tonight" plus Wolf+Lamb's Jack Priest offers a new remix of our latest FSQ production, "I Zimbra" a Talking Heads cover featuring Dolette McDonald. George Clinton's nephew Sa'd 'The Hourchild' Ali (Sa'D Ali) and Chuck ‘Da Fonk’ Fishman met in the mid-’90s as touring members of George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic. With the addition of 8-time Grammy-nominated producer G Koop the trio became FSQ, a production team committed to creating original funk of supreme quality.

In the years to follow, Boston-based guitarist Chas Bronz, Philadelphia drummer One Era, and New York audio engineer Morgan Wiley joined FSQ. You’ll find the majority of their original songs and remixes on Soul Clap Records along with FSQ’s 2020 Reprise Tonight - the group’s debut LP. Presented as a tale of having one last party in the span of 24 hours,  features guest appearances from funk royalty, including George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic, Nona Hendryx, Fonda Rae, Denise King, and Dolette McDonald. In 2022, FSQ released a funked-up remix album for their debut record, aptly titled Reprise Reprise Tonight. This jam-packed album features 16 remix turns on the OG cuts by Tom Moulton, Ray Mang, Birdee, DJ Rocca, Lee Curtiss + more.
