A couple people in my life have had an extraordinary impact on who I am. My little brother Lawrence aka Lil Lawaw is one of them.

From taking me to my first proper festival (Dekmantel - Tomorrowland just isn’t that lol), shaping my musical journey on many occasions like going to see Antal all night in De School, driving all the way from Antwerp.

On this beautiful night in the Paradiso basement we played b2b again for the first time since 2023. Brother to brother, butt to butt, bruur 2 bruur. Our bi yearly brotherly competition to see who has the best tunes and who’s the best DJ.

Luke Vibert is a British recording artist and producer known for his work in many subgenres of electronic music. Largely responsible for pioneering the electronic music genre known as Trip Hop under the alias Wagon Christ, made from forms of ambient music mixed with instrumental forms of hip hop music and slow break beats. Vibert has also recorded under many different well known other musical aliases, most notably Wagon Christ, Kerrier District, Plug, Amen Andrews, Ace of Clubs, Luke Warm and Butler Keiv. He is based in London and tours and performs regularly all around the world.

Vibert grew up in Cornwall, England and played bass and drums in punk and rock bands growing up. Later a key member of famed British electronic musician Aphex Twin’s Rephlex Records crew in the early 1990’s. Spurred on by the success of his friend Richard D. James (Aphex Twin), Luke began recording and releasing some of his own music and later released a collaborative album, Weirs on Richard James’ Rephlex label. Luke’s work attracted attention of Casper Pound of Rising High Music label who commissioned an ambient music album from Vibert, his first full length solo album, Phat Lab Nightmare, released under his now infamous alias Wagon Christ in 1994. A groundbreaking record which generated a great deal of buzz and attention for the young producer and his prolific output of releases.

Vibert would go onto produce much more music under the Wagon Christ name and eventually signed to popular London based record label, Ninja Tune Records for many of his Wagon Christ releases and later to major label, Virgin Records. Vibert also uses other aliases such as Plug (for his drum and bass electronic music). For the 1996 album Drum ‘n’ Bass for Papa, Vibert signed with famed Grammy Award winning artist and Nine Inch Nails member, Trent Reznor’s Nothing Records. Vibert’s many releases vary in style as he releases music under various names to keep his creative output selling and diverse. Each Vibert release and alias gaining critical reviews in major music publications and radio stations worldwide such as Rolling Stone, Magnet, The Wire, NME, Pitchfork Media, Red Bull Music, Vice, BBC 1. In fact one of Luke’s earlier supporters was the late BBC radio personality, DJ John Peel, who has hosted Luke for the late DJ’s legendary “Peel Sessions” on the BBC a handful of times. Vibert has also co-hosted or has been featured on radio stations and media appearances all over the globe.  

Luke Vibert has been invited to headline and perform at some of the most popular music festivals, concert halls, venues and music clubs around the world including Sonar Festival in Barcelona, Coachella Music Festival in California, Moog Festival, Bangface Weekend and many more. Luke is a resident DJ along side UK electronic artist Posthuman for their widely popular “I Love Acid” club night, which started in the UK and has since taken place all over the world. 

Vibert has remixed a wide range of music artists such as Tortoise, Nine Inch Nails, Stereolab, Todd Osborne, Squarepusher, Aphex Twin, Meat Beat Manifesto, Thurston Moore, Coldcut, Lamb, David Sylvian to name a few.

The ever-restless crate digger and globe-trotting selector Romain FX steps into the booth for our 137th edition of the Phonica Mix series, bringing with him the full force of his nomadic, genre-bending ethos. 
Born in France but raised across Hong Kong, Taiwan and the USA, he’s spent nearly two decades cultivating a sound with no borders—whether through founding Hong Kong’s Fauve Radio and Fauve Records, digging through the city’s back-street record shops or driving sunrise sessions atop the Great Wall of China. For this mix he set out to “create a melting pot of sounds from different corners of the world, stitched together into my own musical sphere,” he tells us, outlining his intent to blend Canto Pop with Korean beats, Ghetto House with IDM, Indian electronic experiments and dreamy rave, all seasoned with a dash of space disco. That he pulls it off – without caring if genre purists wince – is testament to years of diligent vinyl hunting (over 3,000 records and counting) and a restless urge to challenge the dancefloor. It’s not just the track-list that intrigues, but the spirit of connection through contrast. Expect hidden unreleased gems for curious ears, and a journey that reminds you why Romain FX remains one of the most adventurous voices in underground dance music today.

The original mix is one I’ve been playing a lot in the last years, it never fails to move people, especially when that vocal slips in and out. It was released in 2001 on Urban, a German house and trance label that later shifted almost entirely toward hip-hop and rap around 2005.

One club/party to highlight : 

I will go with Heideglühen (Berlin). This past year I have spent great moments there. They’ve managed to keep this form of authenticity in their bookings when it comes to house music, and this identity throughout the years. Lil Louis’ set there was something else, he was literally blowing up the speakers after opening with The Doors - Riders on the Storm <3

You know that feeling when a track hits from the very first moment you hear it and you just know it’s going to be a great one? This was one of those.

One sentence about the mix :

I started the set with a track built around a flute sample, an instrument I played for years and love bringing back into my sound. From there, it slowly evolves into a more energetic pace, but always with a lot of melody: a blend of fresh discoveries and dance floor–tested classics, shaped by Chicago, New York, and UK influences. Sit back, relax, and hope you enjoy the ride.
