A gifted musician in possession of an array of talents, Luc Angenehm has caused quite a stir within the underground dance fraternity. With a growing collection of outstanding original material to his name, the "Kaiserkraft" EP for Proton Music broke new and exciting ground. Already receiving a quartet of remixes across two EPs for the label, a third, this time for Particles, once again extends Angenehm's work.

San Francisco based, Mark Slee, is a name well-known across the bay area and beyond. Passionate about his work as DJ and producer, Slee has been heavily involved in the music industry since co-founding the House-Heads collective in 2008. In tandem with regular gigs across San Francisco, appearances at "Burning Man" and to international acclaim in South Africa and Mexico, Mark's "Heron Sound" show for Proton Radio has also showcased his talent as taste-making DJ. As a producer, Mark Slee has been a firm favourite on Jondi and Spesh's Looq Records, with additional work finding its way on to the catalogues of Submarine Vibes, Cityfox and Lucky Sun. Furthermore, the formation of his co-owned Manjumasi imprint, with Atish, has proved an enormous success with a roster that includes Nico Stojan, Brian Cid and MUUI.

A trio of high-profile remixes for Proton Music have been combined with a single rework of Vitamindevo for Particles as Mark Slee now returns to the label with a typically polished affair. An elegantly crafted, deep percussive groove holds sway with sumptuous bass line variation, as melodic elements from Angenehm's original are juxtaposed against the hypnotic rhythmic patterns. A wealth of original production is in full evidence as stuttered motifs keep interest high in a work of skill and poise.

On Australia's south-eastern coast, Nick Retz has hit a rich vein of form through his Retza production moniker. Responsible for the "Rework Podcast", Retza's DJ skills have seen his diary increasingly filled, driven by inspiring performances at the likes of "Rainbow Serpent Festival", "CHI WOW WAH" and on the international arena, while Rework itself "is a collective of DJs and producers that came together…to push techno and house on the dance floors of Melbourne's underbelly." 

As a producer, a growing portfolio of material has found its way onto the likes of Lo-Fi 45, All Day I Dream and Watergate Records, supported by the underground DJ elite that includes, Kasey Taylor, YokoO and fellow countryman, Jamie Stevens. Now making his Particles debut, the Retza remix of "Kaiserkraft" lives fully up to its "Day Dream" title. A rich, low-slung groove drifts across a near nine-minute voyage that revels in dream-like melodies and pads that bleed into each other in unhurried fashion. Ever-evolving, a canopy of sound in the mid to upper frequencies gently covers the hypnotic rhythms below, creating a post-breakdown third movement that cleverly revisits Luc Angenehm's original elements in inspiring fashion to create an ethereal and opulent offering.

Remixes from Mark Slee and Retza still find Luc Angenehm very much the master of "Kaiserkraft".

Los Angeles DJ/producer LUXXURY aka Blake Robin continues his streak of quality disco singles with his latest original, the piano-house tinged gem “Pleasure!” Adding new sonic colors to his signature sound (shimmering rhodes, funk bass guitar, balearic beats) are collaborators Zach Robinson (D/A/D) on Rhodes and flute solo, and Becca Schack (Beca) doubling the mimimalist vocal: the song has literally just one, single word.

Robin explains how the song came together: “I dialed up a beat and Zach found these dope, Steely Dan-like chord changes while I played bass, and this awesome track came together in a less than an hour. For vocals I challenged myself to beat the short-but-sweet lyrics kings Daft Punk (‘Around the World’) and Duck Sauce (‘Barbara Streisand’) but it turns out its hard to write a one word song without sounding like a 50’s surf band (“Wipeout!”, “Tequila!”). However as soon as I tried the word ‘Pleasure’, its evocative onomatopoeia worked perfectly and gave the sunny beats some added sexual heft.” To fully flesh out the sensual vibe LUXXURY recruited indie pop songstress (and LUXXURY-produced protegée) Beca to share vocal duties. The result is another dancefloor masterpiece from the West coast don of disco.

ABOUT LUXXURY: In 2013 an unknown LA-based producer started to drop a series of unofficial bootleg remixes on an empty Soundcloud profile. Using only original multitrack stems for a number of famous songs including Eagles' "Hotel California” Duran Duran's "Girl on Film” and many more, they were called "LUXXURY edits” and they immediately caused a sensation in the disco underground. As a result of the attention he received from the Wall Street Journal, LA Times, Vice and more he began to get commissioned remix work from artists such as Greg Wilson, Melanie Martinez and Fitz & The Tantrums. In 2016 Luxxury released a series of original singles, formed a live 4 piece band that opened for Giorgio Moroder, Juan Maclean, Kraak & Smaak and appeared on NBC's Last Call with Carson Daly; and received coverage from outlets including Majestic Casual, Spin and Complex.

‘Shapes On Shapes’ is the much anticipated debut album from LA based duo Wild & Free. Released this November on Portugal’s Discotexas, ‘Shapes On Shapes’ sees Drew Kramer and George Cochrane deliver on the promise of their early releases with 11 tracks of languorous poolside disco, tropical pop and Balearic house.
 
Both multi-instrumentalists, singers and producers in their own right, the pair came together in 2015 and have spent the past 2 years crafting a series of acclaimed EPs and remixes (for the likes of Panama, Gigamesh, Joe Goddard and Ben Browning of Cut/Copy) that saw them tipped by the likes of Spin, XLR8R, Indie Shuffle and many more and take their live show on the road playing alongside the likes of Brooklyn’s Body Language.

From the album’s opener, and title track, an intoxicating haze of ambient synths, dreamlike vocal samples and reverb drenched guitar licks, its clear Drew and George have stretched themselves to fully embrace the possibilities of the album format. It's also obvious that the band have named themselves well, as throughout the record there’s a looseness and sense of spontaneity that few studio based acts can pull off. 

Whether it’s the sun kissed pop of ‘River of Nilé’ and ‘Moment’, the exotic heady disco of ‘Tropique’ and ‘Ferns and Stuff’ or the dub inflected ‘Hiding Behind the Sun’, ‘Shapes On Shapes’ is one of the most joyous, life affirming albums you’ll hear this year.

Was an honor to remix Jai Wolf's iconic song Indian Summer. Was challenging to make it my own cause I felt that the song was very much what it was supposed to be already. Ended up doing a few remixes, all of which were very similar to the original, but finally I decided that I had to do something completely different, which became the final product. Super proud. Hope you enjoy 💕
