Next in the series we have a very special mix for you all from the one and only Tina Edwards! Ahead of her guest appearance at Brilliant Corners with us this Easter Weekend she has laid down an hour of party jams to get us all in the mood, great weekender starter right here.

At home on Worldwide FM - where she’s been a resident for five years - Tina brings together a broad range of sounds; think contemporary and uncovered gems; large-scale jazz, funk, disco, a spectrum of house music and even left-field pop. Nothing is off the table, following in the footsteps of eclectic diggers like Folamour and Hunee. The spirit of the UK Jazz sound - which Tina has been championing through her radio and presenting projects since 2014 - is at the epicentre of everything she does.

Tina knows how to win over a room’s trust, to introduce them to something fresh - whether it’s an unexpected change of mood or a hop from a classic to obscurity. That’s why her sets can be heard in a variety of spots, from JazzFM to Radio alHara. She also hosts radio shows for BBC Radio 3 (Jazz Fix) and hosts/produces her series Next Big Thing for British Airways.

Discotheke Mix - FSQ

We are excited to kick off our new mix series with a local LA legend and one of the first to every grace the decks at Discotheke in LA, it's none other than FSQ!

FSQ celebrates their tenth anniversary in 2023, with the music project being born out of the epic collaboration between Parliament-Funkadelic and Soul Clap in 2013. This six person team covers soul, funk, disco and house music in their original and remix productions. 

FSQ DJ sets are helmed by the group's leader, Chuck Da Fonk, and extend into some of the funkiest corners of dance music, where you'll hear deep Balearic grooves, rare P-Funk sides, 80s boogie funk, uncommon new wave 12"s, and modern underground house cuts. For this exclusive mix for the Discotheke party, Chuck captures some of the vibe he brought to his last appearance in early 2022. Laced with two hours of funk leaning jams, this mix explores some of the deeper FSQ productions including the group's remix work for Nona Hendryx and Nick Monaco, and FSQ collaborations with European based nu-disco producers Alan Dixon, Colleen Cosmo Murphy, Yam Who?, and Birdee. Classic funk from George Clinton sits alongside New York City disco-not-disco cuts by Kid Creole & The Coconuts and Yello. 80's dance jams by Thomas Dolby and Duran Duran are foisted up against fresh new releases by modern nu-disco artists Midnight Magic, Tigerbalm, and Rheinzand. With so much music in the FSQ record bag, it's always hard to choose what to put into a DJ mix, but the Discotheke party is about dancing, disco vibes, and a persistent groove, which this Chuck Da Fonk selected set certainly delivers over the course of two hours.

The Disco Mix - FSQ

Paolo Aniello FKA New Digital Fidelity returns one final time since his last appearance on Italian Synth Planetarium – Sistema 1 in 2020 and readies some serious and sexy goodness for 2023.

“Gonna Touch The Sky” marks his debut on Moods & Grooves and there is no doubt that it will literally make you touch the sky! The EP opens with the reshape from none other than deep house legend Fred P. When it come to (ultra) deep house beautiness, Fred is the real don. Melodic, dreamy and groovy. Simply what you would expect from him and what he does best.

To follow is the original mix, awash in syncopated tribal rhythms, gorgeous female vocals and a rich tapestry of ethereal pad. “Gonna Touch The Sky” is a dancefloor-pleasing Afro house cut à-la Ron Trent/Trinidadian Deep featuring Sasha Paige on lead vocal and Rhia Reneè on background vocals that bubble over a deep, tribal groove.

On the flip, “Make Up Your Mind” takes tribal rhythms to a new, more mental level. It’s an Afro-Chi-meets-Detroit affair. The percussive rhythms and energy that constantly interplays with the synth line create an uplifting basement tune that could safely run at opening, peak time, or closing time. Last but not least, “Horizon” speaks for itself. It will definitely transport you to new horizons, toward a tropical beach at sunset, closing this incredible journey.
