October 2023 - Escape Aid - The Ultimate Question

I'm a former sound engineer from Translab Studio Paris, providing audio mastering for +650 releases including Pepe Bradock "Deep Burnt", and all Daft Punk's Crydamoure label. I've carved the French-Touch sound during 10 years and launched the lounge music movement. I initiated the first raves in France with my friend Manu Casana, sound-designed Karl Lagerfeld's shows amongst others. This is my new projet. 100 compilations, sharing my personal selection of the best contemporary music, mixed together in the most eclectic way, yet creating an unforgettable journey. This is my "Collection".

I am delighted to share this eighth musical journey with you, a colorful, sun-drenched mix that's perfect for kicking off the night after a frugal meal! "Collection 008" is now available on Soundcloud and Mixcloud. 

Faithful to the eclecticism I've used for the first five volumes, this new opus will plunge you into a mix between the world of the 2000s - with its wealth of melodies and fusions with electronic music - and the 70s. The latter is represented by a number of UFOs that permeate the mix, giving it a patina and a timeless dimension. Serge Gainsbourg and his musical constellation take pride of place here.

This mix is a bridge between lounge music and my conception of today's mainstream music. From the very first sound, the dance is underway, launched on a swinging mid-tempo, where rhythm'n blues, funk and rap follow one another for the first 20 minutes, to run aground in the old-fashioned way on a first series of slows, with this superb remix by Boogalox, revisiting Gainsbourg's "Chez les Yé-Yé".

Halfway through, the tango merges with electronic music (a magnificent remix of Sarah Vaughan by my friends in Gotan Project)... and the dancing continues until the 50-minute mark. The second series of slows sweeps over everything like a gentle wave, taking us through its diversity to the sweet syrup of the magnificent Nightmare On Wax interlude that brings this new journey to a close. 

Of course, all this is just a summary of what my "Collection 008" is all about. Don't worry: the surprise is always there and the cachet always renewed.

The city lights blurred through the tears welling up in my eyes as I sped down the highway. My heart felt like it had shattered into a million pieces just hours ago when she ended things. Their words were still echoing in my mind, each one a fresh stab of pain.

My destination was a small, dimly lit club in another city. I had agreed to DJ there weeks ago, and despite my heartbreak, I couldn't bring myself to cancel. Music had always been my sanctuary, my way of processing the world, and tonight, more than ever, I needed it.

When I arrived, my heart sank further. The club was almost empty, with a couple of staff milling about but not a single guest in sight. The emptiness mirrored the void inside me. I set up my equipment, each motion mechanical, the weight of my grief pressing down on me.

As I started my set, the first few notes rang out, delicate and haunting. My fingers moved across the controls with a grace born of muscle memory, but my mind was elsewhere, replaying memories of laughter, of shared dreams, now all tainted with a sense of loss. Tears streamed down my face, unnoticed in the dark.

Despite the empty room, I poured my soul into the music. Each track I played was a journey through my emotions, a sophisticated mix of melancholy melodies and haunting beats. It was a set like no other, raw and real, each song a piece of my broken heart.

As the music swelled, so did my tears. I wasn't just playing for an absent audience; I was playing for myself, for her, for everything we'd had and everything we'd lost. The beats became my catharsis, each transition a step towards healing.

As the last notes faded into silence, I looked around the empty club. No one had witnessed my emotional release, but it didn't matter. I had played for myself, and in doing so, had begun to mend my broken heart.
