Patrick Topping’s productions have an effortless swagger when it comes to working the dancefloor and still only on his second EP, the North-East’s star in the making is showing plenty of nous with his massive debut for Hot Trax and now the intoxicating ‘Any Amounts EP’ on Hot creations. A-side ‘Any Amounts’ is getting hammered by Jamie Jones and crew, packed with stomping bass and ridiculously infectious top-lines, it’s a simple and dangerously effective weapon to destroy all dancefloors. ‘The Point’ moves into glitchier territory with another tough and raw bassline and old-school synths. On the flip, ‘Look Around’ weaves provocative vocal clips with heavy bass, a disembodied chorus and syncopated beats. Last but not least Patrick pairs another breathless vocal sample for ‘In My’ with a stripped back bumpin’ house groove, arpeggiated synths and subaqueous growl.

Patrick Topping delivered his first EP ‘Walk On’ on off-shoot Hot Trax earlier this year, which reached no.5 in the Beatport Deep House charts and was championed by Pete Tong on his legendary BBC radio 1 show.

With his tracks gaining support from heavyweights Franck Roger, Richy Ahmed and Darius Syrossian and Jamie Jones even before they were signed, it was only a matter of time before the budding artist broke into the limelight.

Now 24 years old Patrick, first built a DJ career around playing at his own popular club night in Newcastle, Motion while at Uni but started concentrating on production in 2011. Through the old-fashioned demos route, Patrick caught the attention of the Hot Creations camp as they recognised the talent and Patrick’s innate ability to craft a banging record.

For his second outing on Infinite Machine, Rob Burn returns as iO Sounds with fellow Londoner & regular collaborator Lakosa (known as Steffan Smith to his parents) to deliver two fully-primed dancefloor anthems that cleverly straddle the nexus between the demonic bass weight of today's jungle-informed bassline house and the emotive effectiveness of cinematic house. The result is both refreshing and overwhelmingly relevant. The double single starts with the Dirtybird-approved "Livewire" - a bouncy, energetic display of force that has been been making waves over the last year as it circulated heavily through the sets of most every DJ aligned with the bass music community. It's cinematic pads descend into a mean, growling bass line and ascend again and again, threaded together by the fervent, rolling toms and restless drum pattern rotations that outline the song's meticulously robust structure. On the flip we're treated to "Got That Swag," another uncategorizable house derivative packed to the rim with dirty, bass-heavy fury. With nods to fellow UK contemporaries like My Nu Leng and Kry Wolf, the Balearic, somewhat trance-like stabs belie the electrified bass line that enables the song to progressively delve into darker territory as the chopped vocal sample (from which the track derives it's name) fulfills its percussive duty. While more straight-ahead than "Livewire," "Got That Swag" hovers above classification as a DJ tool as both producers execute a strong balance in the voices and maintain their tenacity for rhythmic variation.

For the second release on London-based Tender Hooks, Lakosa & Rick Grant deliver 'Static / Temptations', a smoky lo-fi techno workout featuring remixes from Kornél Kovács  and Severn Beach.


With releases on George Fitzgerald's ManMakeMusic and TAKE Records (which he runs a third of), Rick Grant has for the last few years been honing his craft. His recent collaborator, Birmingham-come-London resident Stef Smith aka Lakosa has been releasing a steady stream of garage-inflected Techno for 2nd Drop, Kerri Chandler's Madtech Records and many more.


Opening track 'Static' is a dusty late-night groover. Indistinguishable samples ebb and flow around the beats before a bumping bass movement delivers the muscle.


'Temptations' is a darker cut of sooty techno. A meaty drum pattern provides the backbone while subtle synth motifs and vocal nuances float throughout.


Severn Beach steps up with a burgeoning dancefloor edit of 'Temptations'. The somewhat darker alias of house maestro James Fox, Severn Beach pushes the envelope for high-gain, warm & punchy techno. With releases for Audio Culture set to drop this year and a brace of other exciting projects, we're excited to have this talent on board.


Fresh out of Sweden's Barnhus Studio comes Kornél Kovács, rounding off the EP with a startling, melancholic remix of 'Temptations'. Completely flipping the vibe of the original on its head, Kovács masterfully weaves the source material into non-linear forms with plenty of "strössel" on top.

Timmo’s debut Drumcode release ‘We Beat On’ carries a flow through out that gives Timmo his own unique sound that has captured the ears of many highly revered techno DJ’s around the world. Timmo uses hypnotic sounds and phrases whilst he always maintains a thumping techno beat that underlies all the tracks within this EP to maximum effect. Furthermore, there is a ghostly feel amongst Timmo’s tracks that really provide him with his acquired sound, the pads in ‘Canvas’ are a beautiful reminder of this. Timmo also uses strong synth stabs to full effect that juxtapose against the drums to help create the tension and aggression that is present within techno.

Holland's Egbert goes heavy on the cowbell and makes the most out of the original's manifold refrains, extracting the maximum energy from the sounds therein and fusing them to a funk-fuelled groove that fans of Joris Voorn will likely appreciate. His remix builds pleasingly, utilising the original's parts in gradual fashion to reach a fever pitch.

It is warm, upbeat, energetic and most of all, irresistible: The Egbert-sound. Egbert VanderGugten is an ordinary Dutch guy, except for the fact that he is THE Dutch techno-act at this moment. In his loft in Rotterdam, Egbert produces one great dance floor track after another. However, no dance floor can hear it. The only witness to the magic he creates are the four walls of his loft until the Dutch techno legend Secret Cinema (Jeroen Verheij) finds him online. Verheij pulls Egbert out of his loft and gives him, at age 20, a stage to perform on and a record label. It turned out to be the start of an international victory tour. Having hardly recovered from his first two releases in the Netherlands, Sven Väth calls from Frankfurt: ‘Can Egbert deliver a track for Cocoon, stat.’ Vreugdevuur becomes one of the most prominent releases of 2009 and after that things go fast. Really fast. The loft quickly becomes history when Egbert closes the main stage of Time Warp, crushes Awakenings for no less than a dozen times in a couple years and graces Club Womb in Tokyo. Additionally, he is a frequent guest in Cape Town, Budapest, Ibiza, Melbourne and Singapore… Not bad for a guy who before his first release only flew in a plane once. But understand that wherever Egbert comes, all (let me repeat: ALL) hands will go up, and they will stay there.

Egbert sets a new standard when he singlehandedly performs for 6 hours straight in a sold out club Melkweg in Amsterdam. Aside from the fact that he still has a countless amount of tracks waiting to see the world (thank you, loft), Egberts’ ambition and energy are limitless.

The entire world is his next stop.
