Interesting process and a very cool result.

I wanted to get the impulse response for the room in question, or something like it. In the end I ran wireshark, captured the packets following an http get of disquiet.com/2014/04/03/disquiet0118-internetroomtone/, and exported the data.

First I tried just creating a "mix down" of the packets, summing up the individual bytes for any given sample in time from all the packets (assuming packets being traansmitted at a rate of one byte per sample @ 44.1kHz). Anyway, that gave me an impulse response with a few clicks at the beginning, a lot of noise in the middle, and a few more clicks at the end. It was around 30 seconds long.

I wanted something with more tonal material, so with the same data set I used the per-packet bytes as phase increments to per-packet sine wave generators, and accumulated that over time. It gave me something like the impulse response, but something more amenable to being stretched with paulstretch. 30 seconds was too short for me, so I repeated the "impulse response" thing four times, vocoding the paulstretched tonal thing, mixed in a few more of the tonal things, convolved it all with the impulse response and then saturated it. I guess it got something of the mood I wanted, and involved some of the process which I had intended.

My take on this week’s topic is based on the idea of an evolving eco system and how individual organisms contribute to their environment.

In my case, the environment is my small studio in the attic of my house and the individual organisms are the various synths, modular and otherwise, that are all connected to one another in some form. More specifically, my method is as follows:

1) I have selected a single tone or very simple sonic element that I think best represents the character of a particular synth, module or a self contained patch;
2) Each of these tones or sonic elements are triggered and fed into a chaotic looper, in my case the Soma Cosmos in combination with “Airport Looper” created for the Zoia, which are fed back into each other via a matrix mixer;
3) I wait to hear what happens;
4) The aim is to resist triggering further tones and sonic elements but since evolution is not a predictable or rule based process, I might do so. After all, I am also part of this eco system, and as such, cannot keep silent.

Instruments used: Buchla Easel Command, 1010 Music Synthbox, Arp 2600, Arturia Drumbrute, Microfreak, Microbrute 2s, Lyra-8 and the Inner.

I love the water drip sound of the original sample - I hear it as "tapati" and used it as is as the center of the piece. Just riffed on it on GarageBand. So, not a partita but a tapatita...

SF Tapatita (disquiet0581)

A rhythmic field-recording of a downspout in Helsinki serves as the basis for this track, inspired by the Disquiet Junto Projet 0581 (details see below).

Somehow Helsinki immediately  triggered thoughts of Aki Kaurismäki and his many beautiful films. Especially https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drifting_Clouds_(film) came to mind and gave the track its title.
I hope the track does it justice. Since it was created rather technically it is a result of the versatility of randomness and the power of art.

I proceeded as follows: First, low-pass and high-pass filtered versions of the field-recording were created. Then hit-points and midi-notes were extracted from these three variants. These were assigned to different instruments.
Two variants of the field-recording created with PaulXStretch are also included.

Disquiet Junto Project 0582: X Techno
The Assignment: Make a new subgenre.

Step 1: You’re going to make a new subgenre of techno. Think for a moment about what makes techno techno.

Step 2: Choose a word and put it before “techno.” Those two words in combination are your new subgenre.

Step 3: Record a piece of music in the style of the subgenre you came up with in Step 2.
