I think this is an eastern screech owl (comments/corrections welcomed)

Located on the Tanneron Ridges, the Forêt Du Grand Duc covers 90 hectares and offers beautiful views over the Mediterranean Sea, the Bay of Cannes and the Lérins Islands. 

This recording was made at 6am, about 45 minutes before sunrise. We hear nightingales, robins, blue tits, blackbirds and other common woodland birds.

Dawn Chorus - Forêt Du Grand Duc, Mandelieu, France

5 AM, still in the darkness of mid-March morning, a pair of tawny owls starts vocalising at their would-be nesting grounds. They are probably still in courting phase. Female was desperately calling all through previous evening and male repeatedly approached. In the morning, first thing they did was passionately-sounding lovemaking...  At least that is my interpretation of the audio  recording.

August 14, 2022...    forest soundscape at ~ 5 am.   Quiet, still, calm, little wind, dominated by insect sounds typical of this time of year.  Recorder & mics located on the edge of a still pool in Brown Creek, not flowing this time of year due to lack of rain in late summer here.  There actually is a very slight flow of water, which can be heard thoughout the recording.   Photo shows site of recording.  Near the beginning of the recording there are calls of an eastern screech owl.  Later, a few frogs chime in.   This night was relatively cool for August (temps in the high 60°F range).  

In the forest here, this is the the quietest time of the night, 1-2 hours before dawn.  After dawn, the cicadas will start, the wind will pick up and it won't be quiet again until late afternoon.  As night falls, the evening summer soundscape here is dominated by (very loud) katydids, crickets, other insects and sometimes frogs/toads, for hours...   continuing through most of the night until early morning quiet time. 

Recorded with Earsight mics about 50-60 cm apart into a Zoom F3 recorder.  Low frequencies were attenuated and volume was adjusted.

In the wolf forest close to Uppsala I placed a drop rig continuously recording for 48 hours and mixed it down to nine minutes. In the order they appear:

capercaillie, male flew past very close
pygmy owl
common scooter, two flocks migrating south

WOLVES
pygmy owl
ural owl, female barking
jay
crested tit
raven landed close and walked around at the same time as WOLVES had a concert in the distance

My alarm was set for 5am local time, about 45 minutes before the dawn chorus had been starting up on recent mornings in the hills. But I hadn't taken account of the full moon. Beware the power of the moon in a clear sky. When I switched on the recorder a few minutes later, this was what I heard: the larks all in full swing. 

There are Calandra Larks, Lesser Short-toed Larks and the incomparable Dupont's Lark here.

before dawn on the Ebro steppe

11th of February 2023.    I was not sure if  would go out early to record as I both wanted and not wanted to go at the same time, sometimes I feel like that.  If I was going to get up I would need to wake at 4.50am.  
I usually have the radio on for a lot of the night it helps me to sleep.  I woke to a Led Zeppelin track, so what time was it ?  4.49am, so I thought that seeing that I woke at the right time I would get up.  Got out of bed at 4.53am.  Left home for Ballinvally woods at 5.55am, arrived at 6.21am.  The birds began to sing and call at 6.52am.  A nearby Songthrush sang really well, so I got a nice close perspective recording.  After this I recorded various sounds in the area.  A lot of jets went over, so I gave up and went home, left at 8.05am, got back at 8.33am.  It was a calm dry cloudy morning.  I used only the MixPre3 and the Rode NTG-8 gun microphone (No second recording rig/Drop rig).  This Soundcloud track was made up from four of the five recordings, a sort of medley of the mornings work.
