“I just thought this song had a really odd, strangely beautiful quality to it, which is why I used it to open the record. I like the idea of starting absurdly small and then getting quite big and epic about two-thirds of the way through. Hopefully, people won’t turn up their stereos really loud at the beginning to compensate, because it does get quite loud at the end; but when it begins, it’s just so thin and strange. When you first listen to it, there’s a chance you’ll wonder what’s wrong with your stereo! 

It’s hard to talk about instrumentals because… they’re instrumentals: It’s difficult to say, “The song is about this,” because technically it isn’t about anything. And I never know what to name them, either, so I figure, why not pay homage to my favorite writers and borrow their titles? I’ve named a few of my songs after Southern Gothic stories, and this one comes from “Everything That Rises Must Converge,” which is a Flannery O’Connor story.”

This week's edition of Soulection Radio was really essential. We had a pioneer and important individual who is responsible for many great things going on in our music culture today. He goes by Daddy Kev which most of you may already be familiar with. He founded the legendary weekly event Low End Theory and co-founded Alpha Pup Records/Distribution. Kev dropped a 40 minute set that made us feel like we we're in the time warp in Stanley Kubrick's space hub from '2001: A Space Odyssey'. 

Kev made sure to sprinkle all the classics as well as some forthcoming unreleased material from who knows who. Things got really interesting when Kev and Joe jumped in to the interview portion during the 2nd hour to discuss everything from experiences at Low End Theory, mastering (sound engineering education), the current state of today's music culture, favorite artists to work with, and even a Low End Theory festival that is coming this year. Definitely an educational experience! Joe Kay also showcased some forthcoming material that is too exclusive to be identified (track ID'd ~ Unknown - Untitled) but stay tuned and we will be announcing some of these next artists/releases. Patrick Sexx "The Shadow That Took Shape" available March 11th on Alpha Pup Records

San Francisco native Patrick Sexx creates electronic-tinged works that are birthed from the combination of his constant search for experimental sounds along with a never-resting intuitive mind. His debut full length album The Shadow That Took Shape, out March 11th on Alpha Pup Records, weaves energetic sub frequencies with triumphant synthesis to forge his unique sound. Inspired by numerous cross-genre influences, he builds upon both melody and rhythms that create a constant pulse across various patterns that take shape across the album. Patrick's spirited synths create a blissful energy coupled with heavy 808 vibrations that find comfortable surroundings among his peers on Alpha Pup Records.

After years of a childhood that saw his musical language speak mainly classical, Patrick understood that music was his true calling. Flash forward to many years down the road, while on tour in Europe he first heard production based music from the likes of Aphex Twin and Digable Planets, both of which shattered any kind of creative limitation that may have been holding him back. From there, the shadow of Patrick's new creative dialect begin to take shape, and morphing into something sonically malleable that he continues to sculpt with each passing day.

The Shadow That Took Shape was recorded over the course of a year in the backwoods of Northern California, allowing Patrick to truly feel off the grid while literally removing himself from the boisterous surroundings of many of his counterparts and label mates. Quite literally, most of the music on The Shadow That Took Shape, was captured in a Northern California cabin accessible only by a dirt road. For someone so inspired by the blips of Richard D James and the low end of Doodlebug, it's surprising to hear Patrick's deft touch at incorporating elements that are both musically and thematically organic throughout. Whether it's the old world sounds hear on "Tao," or the close to home inspiration of the album opener "My Father and I," the album was truly inspired by the secluded surroundings Patrick sought out during the creative process.

On the other hand, I was contacted by my good friend Daddy Kev over from Low End Theory/Alpha Pup and he said he had this Nujabes Tribute mix that he made and wanted to see what I thought of it. I listened to it on my way up to Red Bull Studios and fell in love with it and had to include it on this show. I figured since we did a Dilla Tribute that it was only right that we do a Nujabes tribute as well right? Much respect to these legends. We hope you enjoy.
