Ich ergründe einen Klang in meinen Gedanken ^^ und breche ihn auf ^^ um seine alltäglichen und bekannten Elemente zu schichten ^^ und in serieller Weise sein Timbre aus alten und neuen Teilen nachzuformen.
Ich erforsche was wirklich einen Klang ausmacht und wie ich mit dessen langweiligen und meist überflüssigen Teilen etwas originelles schaffen kann das bekannte Sounds in einen hoffentlich neuen und inspirierenden Kontext setzt.

I explore a sound in my mind and break it down to layer its everyday and familiar elements and serially recreate its timbre from old and new parts.
I explore what really makes a sound and how I can take its boring and mostly superfluous parts and create something original that hopefully puts familiar sounds into a new and inspiring context.

the assignment was to come up with a sentence that describes our approach, my practice of creating a new track. took ages to find some words that really match in that context and accompany a true to it concept for this project. i usually wont work with vocals and/or spoken word so this was quite tricky and until mixing and mastering stage it took such a long time giving me real headache (again) but i like with what i came up reflecting what really reflects my work agenda. you should decide if in my track a certain vibe of "chain" or chained parts is to be heard or not, i personally thing i somehow missed that part of this compositional concept. anyway this might well be one of my best tracks this year so far.

Calypso

Last week I had a quick visit to Wheal Lovelace, which is one of the many mine shafts on the edges of the "Wheal Maid valley" also known locally as "Cornish Mars" due to the colour of the arsenic tainted earth. This mine is just around the corner from Wheal Fortune and seems to partly share the same lodes according to the old charts. I found a mass of boxy crystallised pyrite, dragged up from the depths a few hundred years ago and expertly separated from the copper ore by the balmaidens who worked here.

It may be the case that the larger the crystallisation is the harder it is to find good semiconducting junctions though, at least in pyrite - as this seems less active than samples from elsewhere. 

Here I used two samples from the same rock on the squarewave fm and sawtooth generator, and tried out a new mixer circuit on the breadboard I've been slowly working on.

16. "Desassossego" by OCP (aka João Ricardo)

a short memory

As promised, here is the long awaited EP on Serein from Portugese artist, OCP. Those of you with a good memory will remember the contribution he made to the 'Tracks in the Snow' compilation at the beginning of the year, we've been eager to release more of his work and are now pleased to present you with 'Atmos'. This five track EP represents perfectly what OCP is all about, combining elements of ambient and glitch through to the modest sounds of dub techno and stripping it right back to the core, we're left with an understated and refrained collection of minimal yet utterly involving music.

Perhaps what is most striking about OCP's compositions is their unashamedly electronic nature, you are never in doubt as to the source of the sounds, the analogue circuitry practically drips through the speaker cones, which to my mind is very satisfying indeed.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
