Disquiet Junto Project 0216: Thin Layers
The Assignment: Add a thin foundational bed to beats of pin-prick audio.

Step 1: For this project you’ll be adding sounds to a pre-existing track of your choosing. Select one track from the previous Junto project, in which beats were made with five tiny, pin-prick sounds:

Step 5: Then listen to and comment on tracks uploaded by your fellow Disquiet Junto participants.

Deadline: This project was posted at noon, California time, on Thursday, February 18, 2016, with a deadline of 11:59pm wherever you are on Monday, February 22, 2016.

Length: The length of your track should be the same as that of the source track.

**Production Notes**

I went for emi minami’s lovely „tinyrhythms“, a mixture of pins and insects, recorded with a contact mike. You find it here: [https://soundcloud.com/emiminami/tinyrhythms]

Picked some tonal parts of a newer drone piece, arranged them. I cheated a bit in the length, it’s not quite the same, but otherwise the loops would have sounded somewhat strange. 

Some EQ’s and sidechain compression… and that’s all.

S.H.E.'s Tiny Rythmns with Magpies* [disquiet0216-thinlayers]

For this track I used "First pick" by Mike J Dayton as my rhythmic bed.

Vocoded random lovely chord, amplitude modulated by original rhythm bed. Result fed into a reverb with controlled feedback to give overtones. Resultant reverb filter modulated by chopped up portion of original rhythm which in turn amplitude modulates another vocoder in a higher register. Modulated reverb to fade. Pumped it out through a shoe to give it an oaky timbre.

APOB - Peels [disquiet0222-thinlayers]

I took my own piece Hurried Quiet (https://soundcloud.com/forelight/hurried-quiet-disquiet0215-tinyrhythms) which I was quite dissatisfied with and wished to make amends for a below par submission (in my opinion).I took the original piece adding two separate voices to add washes of tone to the piece (using the Geosonic kontakt library and the Spire VSTi plugin). Noise reduction, delays and mastering compression were applied. Of note - I kept on getting clipping/distortion but I found the results added interesting texture so these remained in the final piece.

I really like the collaborative aspect of this weeks assignment and strongly feel this could be the main strength of the whole junto idea. The main track I choose to work with was Emi Minami's gentle and understated piece "disquiet0215-tinyrhythms"https://soundcloud.com/emiminami/tinyrhythms?in=disquiet/sets/disquiet-junto-project-0215  I liked the outdoors vibe and thought it offered a lot of room to roam around in. I went to free sound looking for some nature sounds. I downloaded and used the following sound files.

I added the files onto the Minami track. I then proceeded to do a lot of fx and proceesing and crossfading which got out of hand and I decided to stick to the simplicity of the original and left the files as is except for looping the very short flail sample to give it more of a rhythm. I still decided it needed more of a tempo so I added the beginning of Audio Obscura's excellent track https://soundcloud.com/audio-obscura-music/super-tiny-sound-disquiet-junto-project-0215-tiny-rhythms?in=disquiet/sets/disquiet-junto-project-0215 looping that in. The title "Night of the Cuckoo Batwalk" came from the free sound files. The Assignment: Add a thin foundational bed to beats of pin-prick audio.

I worked with my original Disquiet 0215 track Tiny Rhythms. To create an ambient layer I created 3 additional tracks. First is a time stretched version (3x) of the original, second was created by passing that track through 2 bandpass filters (200z and 6000z), and third is that track pitch shifted down an octave. The three ambient tracks are layered under the original track.

Tiny Sounds, Thin Layers [disquiet0216-thinlayers]

The original work's rhythm starts quite halting and wanted to fill that with presence.  As it got louder, and more musical I wanted to hint at the possibility of melody.... but not to much. All in all, I added only 13 notes!

The added sounds are sampler instrument drones using the first and fourth sound samples from the original track.  Produced in Ableton Live.

Plankton -dirigent - [disquiet0216 - Thinlayers]

Acquired a superb loop track through https://soundcloud.com/kuromiya-hideyuki/fugadisquiet0215-tinyrhythms?in=disquiet/sets/disquiet-junto-project-0215 and denoised it a little.

In FL Studio, set the bpm to 70 and converted the loop track to piano score. Made three tracks from the single piano score and added a high hat. Added various ducking and echoing and volume swells and some other (dis)similar effects to these. Mixed all tracks except for the original to a "thin" state.

Fuga Luda [disquiet0216-thinlayers]

The metallic industrial feel to Matthew McVickar's Tiny Rhythm track from last week's task (https://soundcloud.com/matthewmcvickar/disquiet0215-tinyrhythms) sounded like it would sit well with the pedal-affected drones that I like to scrape out of the viola. I also added a synth line to underpin the whole piece.

The Wind Gets In The Wires Disquiet0216 - Thinlayers

I have been playing with homemade tape loops (https://www.instagram.com/p/BBfzyFMND3b/) and the Nanoloop app (http://nanoloop.com) a lot lately, and thought the very thin layer of tape would be a perfect fit for this week’s project.

I put Insula Dulcamara’s track on repeat and played around in Nanoloop until I had two loops: one a series of bleeps and bloops, and another a slower, layered drone.

One by one I recorded these into my cassette tape recorder (a Sony TCM-200DV) onto the tape loop, and then captured the tape loop audio into Ableton at three different speeds using the recorder’s built-in speed control wheel.

After these three I captured what was on the flip-side of the tape: a recording of me plucking a few guitar strings. I pitched this to be in tune with the other loops.

I arranged the bleeping nano-tape-loop to rhythmically juxtapose the original track, and then brought in the other drone-y tape loops one at a time.

Overcast [disquiet0216-thinlayers]

I chose https://soundcloud.com/hippieswearingmuzzles/geometric-music-disquiet0215-tinyrhythms

The track was duplicated at low gain with heavy reverb.

Three short drones were made from three sounds found in the original, the middle created from a short cloned sample.

I applied a similar principle to the original track’s artwork as well.

That is all.

Geometric Music Redux [disquiet0216-thinlayers]

Original track is "Artificial Countryside" by sevenism https://soundcloud.com/sevenism/artificial-countryside-disquiet0215

I added two layers:

1. Synth strings playing some basic notes around a G major chord
2. Synth piano with heavy reverb & delay.

My interpretation of "thin layers" involved heavily EQing the two new layers, lowering all of the frequencies except the ones with the most information in them. Thus, the two layers volume is relatively low but the sounds are still audible. 

The image for this track is from the original sevenism track, processed as raw data in Audacity.

16-Bit Countryside [disquiet0216-thinlayers]

I've been meaning to get back into disquiet again, but meaning and doing are rather different things, so in the meantime I've mostly ... not.

this week's (and last week) really interested me. the instruction was “Add a thin foundational bed to beats of pin-prick audio”.  

I listened through last week's tracks to select one to work with, and landed on "skull pressure" by Detritus Tabu (https://soundcloud.com/detritus-tabu/skull-pressure-disquiet0215-tinyrhythms)
the near-random beat left lots of sonic room to play with.
I added a pad, piano, synth bass and a light beat - and with each of them I reduced EQ and applied effects that would remove sonic depth (bass, mid-range), to try to "thin" them out. I didn't want anything heavy, or that would weigh down the sound.

the end result is close to what I was hoping for.

thin layers [disquiet0216-thinlayers]

This composition is based on the track "On tiny sounds and irregular rhythm patterns", which can be found at:

To the original track, two thin layers were added, as follows:

* The first layer was created by applying strong reverb on the original track, extracting the wet component, and reversing it.
* Some light effect return tracks were created, and the second layer was improvised on a MIDI keyboard to the existing layers.
* The tracks were mixed, some effects added (reverb, delay, ping pong delay, some light amount of compression), and the MIDI layer was fine edited to produce the final rendering.

The track was composed using Ableton Live 9.5 Suite edition, aided by a Launch Control XL and an Akai LPK25 MIDI keyboard.

Thin layering (disquiet0216-tinylayers)

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
