I did a radical remix to make a drone out of this piece. The process was to splice the source track up into small pieces, some of which I arranged to a new track, half the tempo of the original. The rest I processed with the awesome Evolution device by INA GRM, which I love to use. The result is my drone remix.

Kyoto Kicks (Drone Remix) Disquiet0432

got #53 through the random number generator & was quite glad to get https://soundcloud.com/name-constant/solitary-ensembles-x3-melondruiechaonautncdisquiet0431; a brooding, rich, damp little piece - to my ears ideal for soundtracking the discovery a secret in a horror film.

I initially intended to make something more or less like i always do - a distended collage of elements and gritty little sounds, lathered in hiss and lurches * b u t * somehow i got hung up on a small loop of kick & snare that i could pitch up [and down] into a [to my ears] not unappealing lope…

So yeah, i sort of shoehorned the more delicate work of @melondruie, @Chaonaut & @name-constant into a garbled and tangled beat work-out with resolutely extraneous found sound edges. The only audio i provided was the snatch of birdsong, everything else is a snippet extracted from the three stems more-or-less egregiously repurposed.

A good way to spend a bank holiday afternoon i think. Cheers @disquiet, as always & thanks again to @melondruie, @Chaonaut & @name-constant

I liked the beautifully restrained solo piano track by @bellyfullofstars and unrestrained it by duplicating it and putting one copy each through two different tape loopers.  I added some choral vocalizations to pick up some of the overtones of the piano.

Step 1: This week’s Disquiet Junto project brings the trios sequence to a close. Over the three previous sequential projects, musical trios were created by accrual, one participant at a time. You’ll now remix one (or combine more than one) and make it/them your own.

Step 2: The plan is for you to remix a pre-existing track from the previous project. First, however, you must select the piece of music to which you will be adding your own music. There are well over 80 tracks in all to choose from, 83 in all. You might also choose to use more than one track, mashing up tracks that have nothing in common, or that share elements. Track notes:

I rolled the 83-sided dice of probability and landed on 23, cue: ušće's (Disquiet0431)Trio With Krakenkraft / Matthew Thomas Davis. A nice, rich slab of ambience.

I thought about ways I could potentially remix this. It had been a while since I'd last undertaken anything resembling a remix. I decided to employ my oft-ignored Ableton Live and chop up the original track into a repeating motif and subsume some rhythmic elements into it.

As a result, it's more densely packed than my usual offerings. The overall rendering of the track (lots of compression and sidechaining) coaxed out some interesting textures and artefacts from the original track.

This is a remix, of sorts, of this ( https://soundcloud.com/michel-banabila/fase-3-disquiet-solitary-ensembles-x-3 ) by @michel-banabila, which itself featured ( https://soundcloud.com/supple_be_disquiet_junto/disquiet0430 ) by @supple_be_disquiet_junto which itself featured ( https://soundcloud.com/matthewh538/solitary-ensembles-disquiet0429 ) by @matthew538 ...well that's a few layers deep but then this stage 4 (remix) of the disquiet collaborative junto thingy, which has been loads of fun and good for thee elf. 

In the end with this track I chose, well I just loved the vibe, like Mr Banabila said "just pretending nothing is wrong in the world" - that really came across, and I found it to have a sweet funny buoyant vibe - and so early this morning I just played it out loud a couple of times and improvised, just recording straight into my phone, and those recordings open & close the remix. The central section is words I wrote quickly after, with the general idea of a kind of weird dad and his daughter talking, performed while listening to the tracks. Actually something weird happened and one of the tracks said the tempo was 83bpm, so I changed it to that, from 120, not realising that would slow the whole thing down, thus recorded my performance at 2/3rd speed - for a while I quite liked this ultra-slow wonky version, but in the end I felt it was better for everyone if I just put it back to its original tempo :) Anyway I really enjoyed doing this, I hope it gives some peeps pleasure to hear. It's a bit weird maybe, but weird is good. Weird is good.

So I collected the single tracks, took those apart and remixed it to make it my own. I'd say it's still our own. It took some time until something I could do with it emerged, but then I didn't do much, just added drums (seems to be some kind of standard way to do a remix, but maybe that's because it easily gives a new frame), sped up the piano and aligned it to the beat. I run the guitar through some effects simulation and used only snippets of it which were partly repeated to make it more calm. someone may space out to this, so we don't want to startle them.

Solitary Ensembles - Remix (a new frame) (disquiet0432)

This track takes my vibes stem from 0431 (Off Angle) and Raymond Stull's *delicious* trumpet stem from 0430, and adds a new whole-tone electric piano track. I fiddled with this a while and realized what I wanted was _more trumpet_.

So I added a lengthy delay to the trumpet track and turned the feedback fairly far up to get a Frippertronics effect. The final trumpet track is now multiple copies of Raymond's performance overlapping each other and coming up with previously unrevealed harmonies. I dialed back the vibes and piano to let that lead the piece.

A Third of a Mile [disquiet 0432]

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
