Disquiet Junto Project 0433: Kit Bits
The Assignment: Create a kit’s worth of percussion samples.

Thanks to folks on the Disquiet Junto Slack for helping to plan this.

Step 1: As with the past four weeks, this week’s project is intended to encourage and reward collaboration. Keep that in mind. The work you do this week will be used by someone else next week.

Step 2: The project is to create a kit’s worth of samples. Define “kit” as you wish, and come up with as few or as many samples as you wish. The samples should all be forms of percussion (again, defined as you wish). Between 5 and 10 sounds about right, but there are no limits.

Step 3: Upload the samples for sharing, and make sure they’re downloadable. Consider labeling each with some identifying characteristic. If you do this on SoundCloud, please create a playlist of the samples and include disquiet0433 in the title of the playlist. (Note: While you be making multiple sounds, please upload just one kit’s worth of samples.)

this is ¶radio hummingbird’s contribution to this week’s disquiet junto with the serial number 0433. in short, the requirement for this contribution was to create a sample pack containing percussive sounds.

to achieve this, i used all my acoustic items which i normally use for creating looped soundscapes. these include bubble wrap, paper, card board, metallic objects, seed pods, you name it. all sound samples have been created solely for this purpose and have been recorded without the use of any effect pedals or else.

a daw or computers were only used, for cutting the files into the appropriate length and normalising the sounds. easy.

please enjoy and make good use of the samples for your own projects.

Disquiet Junto Project 0433: Kit Bits
The Assignment: Create a kit’s worth of percussion samples.

I used 1. recordings with a telephone coil microphone recording sounds from an external blu ray drive and a smartphone and 2. random recordings from a Soma Ether device. In these recordings I picked up those areas which I though to be useful for a drum kit, just as I would do it for myself. 

This track contains all samples in no special order in one FLAC, downloadable.

There is a ZIP which contains every sample as a single WAV:

I recorded five small old bells I have found on flea markets with a vibraphone mallet, a clapper and a violin bow. At the end of the track I let the three hanging bells collide.

Whipped this one up just before dinner, made a quick recording with the kitchen knife and the items on the bench, with a dash of saturation and pinch of reverb to spice things up.

These samples were captured on my Zoom recorder today, using only the things around my house. I tried to incorporate sounds from the things that have been a part of my daily life in isolation; planting seeds, watering plants, closing doors, sanitizing things, making medicinal tinctures from Astragalus and Chaga, cutting my own hair and sewing masks. These drum samples are all sounds from activities I've just mentioned. Some of them have been pitched up or down inside of ableton.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
