Disquiet Junto Project 0433: Kit Bits

This is a personal review of the year 2021 - consisting of twelve short musical sections, one per month. The sections were each cut from a RabMusicLab track released in the corresponding month. The tracks were chosen upon their personal or musical importance.

The picture is intended to show a symbol for the passage of time:
It is inspired by the "chronopteric birds" featured in the series of graphic novels "Azimut" by Wilfrid Lupano and Jean-Baptiste Andreae. According to the publisher this is an "incredible Terry Gilliam-esque fantasy tale" and has Time as one of its main subjects.
The photograph shows one of the metal water-spouting birds in the garden of Schwetzingen palace which remind me of these time-related animals in the graphic novel.

Sonic Diary 2021 (Disquiet0522)

I've done every "ice" Junto project, so I have a lot of samples and processed samples to work with.  

This year, I loaded a bunch of old files in the iOS app Samplr and smoothed them out with in-app processing that was sent to my sonic Zambonis, an Empress Echoplex chained to an Empress Reverb.

Disquiet Junto Project 0523: Chill Communication
The Assignment: Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something with it.

The basis of this little sketch were several close mic’ed recordings I made of ice cubes in glasses: with or without liquid, different kinds of glasses, etc. The recording I liked most and ended up using was where I swirled around the cubes with liquid in a large wine glass. This gave this nice pitch wobble in the resonant frequency of the glass. 
I processed the recorded sounds in several ways inside Ableton, using mostly granular samplers, granular delays, and bandpass filters. On top I improvised some melodic/harmonic stuff using MPE synth patches I made. 

Happy anniversary to Marc Weidenbaum (aka Disquiet) on the 10th (!) anniversary of Disquiet Junto!

The Project: Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something with it.

These ice samples were recorded by whirling ice cubes in a growler back in 2017. I looped a section and processed that through a Make Noise Strega, recording the piece mostly as one improvised take where I 'played' the filter to create layers of feedback in the delay. There is one overdub where I improvised repitching the same ice loop in Samplr and also processed that through the Strega, creating different tones of delay feedback. There's a bit of judicious volume envelope editing added in post to calm the feedback swells a bit. It all reminded me of a slow motion version of the wild ricochet sounds made by dropping ice down a bored ice core well.

Kit Bits (brass threads) (disquiet0433)

Drum samples, from the Volca Sample factory sounds, played through a tin biscuit box, in the shape of France, converted into a reverb/resonator. Recorded with the biscuit tin lid on and off through a ladder filter with a touch of resonance.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
