The Assignment: Get started on a plan by getting over getting started.

Step 1: For a lot of people right now, it’s around the start of summer. For many of them, it can mean the start of one plan or another. You may very well have musical goals for the next few months. Think of one to focus on.

Step 2: Don’t wait. Record one piece of music that kick-starts whatever goal you’re working toward. Often the first step is the most difficult. Take that step.

This week’s project takes the start of summer as its theme. And if it’s the start of winter where you are, instead, I hope that it can still apply.

Disquiet Junto Project 0597: Goal Line

[disquiet0597] Aight Jump

An imaginary throwback reunion band quantum leaping from the 1980s, lead singer Katya got caught up in ketamine rave culture in the 90s. 'Those disco kids have filthy hooks, You better not give them Dirty Looks'. 

This is a disko project with Gerry McNee (AKA Itchy Ear) and Andy Edwards and I'm kicking off with this. This rhythm track is my response to this week's Disquiet Junto prompt.

A few minutes from my practice session with a simple improvisation setup: a portable electric piano through overdrive & compressor through tape delay.

I simply in love with how the stereo phaser & tremolo of the electric piano sound get transformed into that overdriven electric guitar soundscape that is constantly undulating and moving.

0597 Peak Drone - disquiet0597

This is the first of several pipe organ pieces I will be working on. The goal is to explore several types of organs for minimlist dronelike pieces of music. I am using the awesome virutal organs of the Virtual Organ Company, in this case the L'Orgue Couperin: http://www.virtualorgancompany.com/vritualvstfrenchbaroqueorgan.asp
The goal is to write music for the particular sound and sound possibilities of different pipe organs.
This project is inspired by the exceptional pipe organ work of Sarah Davachi, but of course I cannot imitate her, but have to go my own path.

A Place Called Nowhere [take Two] (disquiet0597)

Ten days ago, summer started here with lovely warm weather, so this prompt is spot on. My goals were the following:
- Try out the new Microfreak firmware
- Be spontaneous, no DAW, plugins, iPad
- Use Bastl Dude, the two Kastles and Monome Norns
First, I tried to find a not too harsh rhythm on the Kastle Drum, then I connected it to the original Kastle to add a bassline. Next I improvised to this with one of the new Microfreak patches. I ran everything through Norns RPLS and recorded to tape. The first recording was a bit so-so, so I tried to find a better rhythm on the Kastle. But as always: turn one knob one mm and there is no way back to what you had before. So I ended up on a Kastle Odyssee of knobs and tiny patch cables, various short and long takes until for some reason the Kastle generated some sort of melody which finally led to the result you can hear now.

Every goal is made of two elements: the first step and perseverance. 
I wanted to experiment creating glitch drums, with irregular lenghts and tempo changes. I then tried to integrate modular synths with it through midi clock via 0-Coast. Most of the work was done in and through Ableton, and came out as a chaotic piece of electronic music. I think there's still some work to do to make smoother tempo changes and loops transitions but I'm satisfied; maybe it'll lead to new material, maybe not: at least I learnt new techniques and reminded forgotten ones.

I started with a drum rack created with DS Kick, DS Clap, DS Hi-hat and two processed hits and a snare made off a field recording of an engine made in 1903 of a steamboat. I used beat repeat quite heavily and used Bathrööm reverb for the whole drum kit. I then created 8, 7, 3 1/2, 2, 1, 1/2 bars patterns and used Follow Action to program a random beat at 138 BPM. 
After recording it I automated master tempo, combining 69 BPM and 102 BPM. 
I then used 0-Coast to send midi clock to 0-Ctrl that sequenced two ARP2600 clone sine oscillators to create a bass. 
I added some heavily processed audio samples and Plucked Harp Effects to add some "melodic"/atmospheric voices.

Picking up a thread from a long running set of loosely connected ideas around event-based patches that I've never really put into action. Not sure analog hardware is the right format (max exists, for one) but that won't stop me trying.

Treating events (eg triggering a voice)as the unit and observing measurements about these events should allow for feeding back these measurements into what's generating the events to begin with, thus opening up potential complex feedback systems

One of the building blocks for this is simple - what is the 'event rate' i.e. number of events per unit time - but rather than using the control voltage controlling whatever is clocking the events, observe the event rate as the events come in. In this case I'm using an exponential decay envelope triggered by a subdivision of the event counts. Measuring the level of this curve (using a sample & hold) then tells me the event rate - high held CV = high rate, low held CV = low rate. 

This measured CV is then fed back into the event distribution via the 4ms rotating clock divider rotate input (via some extra modulation derived using comparator, a sequential switch and a gate delay).

This is my first time participating in a Disquiet Junto project. I've been lurking on the mailing list and forum since December, but haven't had enough time to participate yet (or, at least, I told myself I didn't have enough time to participate). I've been mentally preparing to join in starting with project 600, but when I saw this week's assignment—to get started on a plan by getting over getting started—how could I let it pass by again?

Nonetheless, I put it off all weekend, and had to do it quickly Monday night. To save some setup time, I created this entirely with plug-ins in Ableton Live—something I haven't done in a while—along with a field recording of the morning here in the suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia. I used it as an opportunity to explore the Arturia MiniLab 3 controller I recently bought, and the V Collection software that pairs so well with it.

Each Day Begins Anew [disquiet0597]

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
