I took each of the 3 30 second snippets, loaded them into Samplr on my iPad and then recorded my manipulations of them into Ableton Live. I used Corpus, Reverb and Delay within in Live to add a little processing.

Dark Winter Gongs (disquiet0177-netlabelportrait)

I always enjoy these remixes - get to do stuff I don't usually do... I tried a bunch of stuff: Paul Stretched and Hourglassed the samples, played, folded and reversed the life out of them...but ended up with the three samples loaded into Borderlands on my iPad. I recorded the outcome into Ableton - added a little pingpong delay on one track and some mastering to the whole thing and voila...

Every couple of months the Disquiet Junto hosts a netlabel remix. All of the source audio for a netlabel remix is available for free, non-commercial download and creative reuse thanks to a Creative Commons license. The netlabel Dark Winter has already released three albums this year. We’re going to use a snippet of one track from each of those records, and in combining them produce a kind of sonic snapshot of the label.

**Production Notes**

All sounds you hear derive from three tracks of the Dark Winter net label (see below). Nothing else was added. 

Netlabel remixes at Disquiet Junto are always fun, and this was no exception. I started extracting a loop from the track “DSM III – The Cristalline Entity”. After that I reversed the intros of the other tracks, tried to extract some low notes and get the bass right (no easy task). 

After that, it was just laying out the pieces. I used Ableton Live’s Corpus, the lovely Crossfade Loop Effect from Expert Sleepers and a ton of EQs. 

Yeah, I know, I know, it’s a strange one (again - but I kinda like it that way).

Mind on many things; took on this Junto as a wind down, and a quick turnaround. Became sufficiently meditative I can't recall the steps: Some messing about in Audacity to break down the original 3x 30sec into various balanced level blends and blocks - then racked up as AudioMulch feeds through multi-FX structures and out onto the control surface.

Winter's Turn [Disquiet Junto Project 0177: Netlabel Portrait]

I started with a loop of the Scott Lawlor snippet and used a step sequencing EQ filter to softly enforce a tempo. Then I modulated a duplicate of the Lawlor loop to create a melody. And I used granular synthesis of the Nadador Nocturno snippet to create an interesting setting in which to place the melody.

A Mourning Song [Disquiet0177 - Netlabel Portrait]

This is my first junto project.  I chose to use the samples as: A introduction using an auto filter, a drone, and one to sound like bells used sparingly.  Overall, I learned a great deal about mixing, limiters, and compression during this project.

Final Take  - Disquiet0177 - Netlabelportrait

I took the the three sound clips as is. After you hear them all simultaneously It breaks off into a drone of the three tracks. I took short clips (1-2 seconds) and repeated them. Lawlor's track gets tremolo, Nocturno's track get repeated with a slight rest, and Ovdk's track gets repeated as is. Final I end where I began only in reverse.

Part Crystaline Shelter

i made extended loops and sequences of the three samples with a view to making something that was dense and molten; i adjusted speed and pitch egregiously. I was maybe more deliberately interested in merging and smearing the samples into difficult to recognise shapes than normal but i still think they're clearly *there*; i didn't really work against their tendency to drone and hang. on reflection, i didn't really intend it to be so bleak-sounding either but it is what it is.

Dark Winter Wonderland [disquiet0177-netlabelportrait]

“DSM III – The Cristalline Entity” excerpt was speeded up to one second, then cloned over and over. It provides the metallic pulsing sound in the second half. In addition, the quiet tinkling section was copied, cloned, delayed and pitched up an octave. You can hear it throughout, and fading away near the end.

The excerpt from Scott Lawlor’s lovely drone “World of Ice and Snow” was just reversed, stretched and amplified – it opens the show then fades away.

The “Underground Shelter” excerpt was delayed and corkscrewed then stretched – also reversed, down pitched and double tracked to provide the somewhat spooky rising and falling sounds.

Planning/Composing/Recording
- As with these types of pieces, it's very much see what the source material will provide. I knew I wanted to create something with a 'dark winter' feel/theme. Kind of an interesting task since we're busting into summer now;)
- Scott Lawlor's segment:
    1. The wind sound: Iris2,UltraChannel and Valhalla Shimmer
    2. The snare sound: source with UltraChannel and Valhalla Room
- Nadador Nocturno's segment:
    1. Lower organ: Source played in Iris2
    2. Higher organ in the middle section: Iris, PanCake2 and Valhalla Shimmer
- Ovdk vs Seetyca's segment:
    1. Ghostly sounds: short segment with UltraChannel
    2. Higher sounds: at beginning and end. Short segment played at higher octave.

Dark Winter Night [disquiet0177-netlabelportrait]

I found a loop i liked in “DSM III – The Cristalline Entity”, then put the same sample into Iris2 and made the wooden bell thing and created the bass part and the melody from that. I sampled a section of “Underground Shelter” for the high frequency stuff.
"World of Ice and Snow, Part 1" became the glitchy stuff by using the "slice to MIDI" function in Ableton and adding some FX. After playing to a friend and him saying he thought a beat was going to drop I made a kick drum our of “Underground Shelter” in another Iris sampler.

Shreddies and honey nut loops. Not really bleak enough but this emerged after some mashing about and i rather liked it. 

Bleak House (Disquiet-0177 Netlable Portrait)

First sample was processed through 30 versions of reverb from an Alesis Midiverb II.
Second sample processed through 10 versions of gated reverb from the same unit.
Third sample processed through 10 variations of reverse reverb.
The results as building blocks dumped onto an MPC 2000xl, then processed through a variety of Oxygen plug-ins, then feed into Oxygen's Iris 2, controlled by a Korg controller purchased from possibly a bandleader in an Egyptian cult.

I used “World of Ice and Snow” looping forward & backward as a drone almost throughout. It is also passed through RP-Distort, a rythmic patch in Etch Red and a bitcrusher to produce a noisy heartbeat. Taming this one proved a challenge, as it tended to overwhelm the rest of the track in its loudest passages, but I did not want to destroy the dynamics either.

A passage of “Underground Shelter” is used at various pitches. The same bit is fed through an extreme effect to produce a more discordant sound, and in yet another track, this time effected by 3Plex with a rythmic preset. 

“DSM III” is played straight, but backwards and at different pitches. It is also used, with reverb followed by stereo delay, for the church-bell like peal that rings every four bars in the first section and every two bars in the third.

I had hoped to make a greater contrast between the sections. More time (and/or better inspiration) would no doubt have helped. I think setting myself a clearer goal from the start and perhaps choosing some specific and more radical effects would have been indicated.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto.
