Disquiet Junto Project 0188: Complex Complex

I've been trying to brush up on DSP math / coding for a while (it's taking me a while) so both the title and the project image had strong overtones of tangled impulsive vectors leaping through modes of rotation in a flattened space. hmmm... maybe not so musical...

But the general idea of 'imagining' repetitious patterns in time as rotations into an auxilliary realm, then back into the real, is powerful as a metaphor, and enigmatic as a tool - producing, on the way, the kind of fractal patterns computers have taught us to admire; along with every VST you may ever have 'plugged'!

I made a rough remix laid out free hand in Audacity, then carried it over to a sequencer, where I layered various long patterns of delay ('complex rotation') and applied phase delay based filtering in the same spirit.

for me complexity is a conceptual endeavour, it's more about the process than the outcome. at the moment, i see complexity as an integration of disparate elements: subjective-objective, creative-analytical, individual-communal, present-past etc. i'm aware that every piece of music i do follows on from another, they are related to each other in some (small?) way. working intuitively allows this to come out i think, but in addition i always combine conscious conceptual elements from previous efforts - my hope is that my soundcloud timeline provides a natural progression track to track. 

i've been working a lot with samples on my last few tracks, so i didn't add anything else. i just went through and isolated small sounds i liked then stretched them and blended in over the course of track (like in sleeping church) but here i was more interested in getting a balance between texture and frequency. i've been working with dronefx on my mixcloud pieces so i used that to generate some note progressions and changed the pitch of the low end sounds. i wanted to make an ambient piece that gradually develops with more texture (again like in all my recent pieces) and i used the concepts of the last two disquiet projects to complement this: i recorded the piece to tape as in summer:impermanence (& fortuitously coz it was the same decrepit old tape a little snippet of that track comes through right at the start!) then i faded between the tape version into the 'clean' version as the track progresses (like in last weeks project).

i wanted the finished piece to sound completely different to the source but still retain something of the spirit of it. i tested this by fading in and out my favourite section of the original  right at the end and i think it works pretty well.

hidden complex (summer mix) (disquiet0188)

This weeks task was to take a track and make it more complex...

Complexity can be approached from various angles, I myself, not being a virtuoso musician, use blunt tactics. 
Previewing the material, I chose to sample (Complexification0010SH by Sun Hammer), The original material was sliced into sections and played back via pads in Ableton, triggering, bouncing and combining the material. After creating a rough sequence of events and patterns by hand and unquantized, I then added some sound design elements to add depth and texture to the sound.  Chains of effects where layered to try and add width.  I'm relying on a mixture of delays and edits to create transitions between the past and I just tried to make an interesting sound collage.

Oh yeah, and it was fun!

Consumer Complex  - Disquiet0188 - Complexcomplex

Lately, I've been enjoying taking a single sample of something and building a whole new track around it. 

I did that mostly with this, a short sample from the 2nd mp3 and then used a bunch of PD samples from freesound along with some VST instruments in Ableton Live - throwing everything but the kitchen sink.. and yet somehow it still sounds unfinished. Will revisit this track in the future.

Started and completed in one session in about 2 hours.

i took the original sample and copied it 8 times as different layers which I then placed into garageband, with each layer being placed slightly to the left of the previous one. this created a complexity in the different spacing of notes and sounds.
I then deleted the beginning 20 secs of the second track (and deleted an extra 20 secs from each of the following tracks so that they all came in slowly to add complexity over an expanded period. i then added 1 effect to each of the layers
layer 1 no effects
layer 2 pitch shift down 
layer 3 slow panning tremolo
layer 4 vocal transformer (pitch down and fierce degradation)
layer 5 pitch shift down
layer 6 vocal trans. (pitch -15 slight degradation)
layer 7 delay (fast sweep)
layer 8 pitch shift down (-12) + 6 second reverb.

- My intention was to have increasing complexity acting upon increasing complexity.
- Did this on my iPad. I used the 2nd track, but really used both. 
- The Sparkle app was used to apply the temporal characteristics of the 1st track onto the 2nd track, so the 2nd track was played with the sound characteristics of the 1st track.
- I took 3 minutes of each track. The 1st track was played at half speed and the 2nd a normal speed. So for this six minute piece the 2nd track (3 minute segment) played twice.
- For the first three minutes it is just the increasing complexity of the 1st track acting on the 2nd track, which itself is increasing in complexity.
- At three minutes delay was added, and then gradually increased.
- Around the last minute I manipulated the filter for additional complexity.
- Recorded the piece in Sparkle, then applied EQ and Compression in Auria.

Transferred Complexity [disquiet0188-complexcomplex]

**Production Notes**

I had an idea for this Disquiet Junto. It involved shifting the tempo while moving the starting point of samples. This would have been a nice and proper approach for the assignment… but honestly, I wanted to make just music. So I threw it overboard after an hour. 

This is the path I went: 

Extracted some loops from the material (lovely stuff!). Slowed it down a little.

Additional drums came from Analog Rytm, the bass pad(2Slow from #Biologiks soundset) from Analog Keys. 

Recorded some piano lines.

To get more complexity, I added Beat Repeats from Ableton throughout the whole track. Towards the end the track adds feedback and noise from a shortwave radio, which are probably the most complex systems I know in music. 

Layout and mixing was done the next day in 6 hours. Boy, that was fun!

Disquiet Junto Project 0188: Complex Complex
Take a provided track and make it more complex.

I used the track Complexification0010SH.

My goal was to add complexity while preserving the clarity of the original track. 

I began by adding 2 subtle tracks under the original opening. One is a time stretched version of the original with a stretch factor of 1. It adds a bit of pitched noise. The other is Spectral Filterbank which adds a slight repeating pitch. Both tracks are derived from and follow the sounds of the original track. They add a new bit of complexity to the original.

For the second section, starting at about 2:15, I added a new track based on the quieter section of the original. I repeated and reversed it creating a bilateral arc. I copied this and time stretched it with a stretch factor of 1. Underneath this I added a long, soft drone from Freesound (DerwentSharpe, Ambient » minor - 3b.wav). All this is under the original track. The new layered sounds add to the complexity of the original.

I overlapped the sounds from the last minute of the original track to create a drive to the final segment. The repeated beat pattern returns at about 3:15, increases and reaches a climax at 4:10. The piece ends with the sound of the original track.

I used only original track as sound material (Complexification0010SH). 

Procedure:

1. I wrote a C program to make algorithmic manipulations of the original sound file.

2. Generated three variations.

3. Of variations, #1 is used as such (and also defined the duration of this track, #2 manipulated with delays, pitch shifters and some granular processes, #3 run another program of mine.

4. All three layers mixed and slightly mastered.

Complicada Cicada

The complexification for this project was based in the collaborative process between @alexrainer and @lethatechnique (aka Las Wolski): sitting down together late Saturday afternoon in the middle of a Central European heat wave, deciding on samples to use, wielding Ableton Live and a Korg nanoKontrol with four hands, meshing processed samples of the distant "Complexification" tracks with local field recordings, deciding on pitch shifting and resonator notes and beat repeats, digressions into discussing the tritone (“the Devil’s interval”) and initial impressions of "Making Music" by Dennis DeSantis, figuring out how to finalize while keeping the track short and varied, and trying to stay hydrated. Break for a walk to Corner Burger in Kazimierz and for Żywiec Białe throughout the evening. The result is a short slice of sinister heat wave dub.

Manipulated beats from the beginning, bell-like synth sounds from the middle, and scattershot percussive sounds from the end of “Complexification0010GB." Added field recordings of a drunk singing down ulica Chodkiewicza, a random streetside whip-slapshot sound, and some revelers toasting at Forum Przestrzenie. Counter-balanced the whip-slapshots with a recording of a big ole China cymbal from the previous week’s drum session at Studio Savant. Threw “Complexification0010SH” into Ableton’s Granulator for another instrument to generate complex textures.

Ul. Chodkiewicza Summer Rips (disquiet0188-complexcomplex)

I took an 11-second snippet of the original track as my core sample.  I wanted to bring out the tonal aspect, so I did some pitch-shifting in Ableton Live to make four versions of the sample - original pitch, pitch- and time-stretched down a fourth, a fifth, and an octave.  I used follow actions to make the clips semi-randomly move downward then back up.  When the clip decided to repeat itself for the last time, the track ended.

However, the chords were hard to hear, so I duplicated the track and then added a Resonator in Ableton Live tuned to match the pitch-shifted chords and a couple of delays to make the chords stick around longer.

Then I took the core sample again and sliced it up into at least 22 micro-samples, each of which repeated or went on to the next sample at their own discretion.  This created "areas" of repeating samples that serve as a kind of form.

This is maybe the most IDM I've ever gotten.

Parallel Asynchronous Phase Rates (disquiet0188-complexcomplex)

When I first saw the image and read the brief, I thought of this process before I had listen to the tracks. The Complexity I hope I have added is in the listening being more complex and made up of lots of small parts. The process I used was to "cut" the tracks into 0.9 sec pieces and then these pieces were the rearranged internally into 1,3,5,7 slices (this control was indeterminate)and re-ordered so the track plays out but with the sound in a different order. This process was applied to the left and right channels separately and mixed back together. 

The cutting up/rearranging was in SuperCollider and the mixing was done in Reaper. 

The name reflects the process applied to the track.

 I used Reichatron to superpose 4 Complexification010SH at slightly different and varying speed, which makes it more complex for me. THen I ran the result at twice the speed: not to complexify but to keep it under 3 minutes ;-)

CoaT - Reichification (disquiet0188 - Complexcomplex)

For this work, I failed to follow directions and I failed to meet the deadline. However, I had fun. :-) I first took both tracks provided to us (I was to have selected one of them) and combined them into one track with the first track in the left channel, and the second track in the right channel. I then threw every software plugin I’ve ever bought and paid for onto the two sides … I don’t work “in the box” very often, so this is my tiny concept of “complicating” something … over-processing it to the point that it becomes essentially noise. Once I had that process complete, I mixed it down to a mono track. I then decided to treat recording it as a field recording exercise. I played it back on my laptop computer with its tinny speakers, and utilized a contact microphone to even further decimate the audio. I processed this microphone in realtime utilizing my modular synthesizer. I created a simple audio path of the left channel patched through a high pass filter, and multed through a low pass filter (effectively creating a notch filter), and then multing the microphone again to an envelope follower which opened and closed both sides of the filters. While all of this was taking place, I concurrently played back the original recording of “Complexification0010SH” on my desktop computer and tried to focus my listening on it exclusively … all the while hooked up to my Soundmachines BI1brainterface which monitored my brainwaves and converted them into CV messages to distribute throughout my modular. I selected specific waves to manipulate the filters further, and also used them to disrupt the signal flow through my reverb and delay. I manipulated nothing in real-time with my hands other than moving the contact microphone twice; once at about 3:15 to move from recording my heavily processed track playing on the laptop to the speakers on my desktop playing “Complexification0010SH,” and again moving the microphone when that song finished to place it against my chest to record my heartbeat which can be heard closing this track. I did not use headphones or monitor recording during this performance and instead relied 100% on the source material and my brainwaves to move things forward.

Stranger Showcase (disquiet0188-complexcomplex)

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
