The first half of the track I wanted to capture the spaciousness and mystery of a cavernous space station – brutalist in design, surrounded by mist. The second half I wanted to take a deep dive into the inner workings of the station, where we hear the isolated clicks of machines and robots discussing the work being done.

My Boots Are Filled With Spacey Eyes (disquiet0683)

Disquiet Junto prompt 0683 instructed us to make a piece of music that is half in space and half not in space.

Radio waves travel at the speed of light, and when the first radio transmission crossed the Atlantic it was said that distance had been abolished. Without distance, there's no space. So half of the song is a story that takes place on a radio, and is about a radio, and was performed in part on a radio, removed from place and space.

There are no synthesizers or synthetic samples in this piece. Instrumentation was a heavily processed guitar played with ebow, a Schechter Damien 7-string guitar, shortwave radio, shoebox cassette recorder, and field recordings. The radio noises and vocal parts are removed from space through a custom convolution reverb I created using a spike of low-frequency AM noise as an impulse response, essentially placing the sounds in the ionosphere.

The story I tell in the song is true.

Soft, Driven, Slow, and Mad (disquiet0683)

Hello, this is a variation of a track I've been working on for a "all percussion" project. I decided to boost the reverb time and amount on all kick and bass drum hits and keep the manual little percussions fully dry, just leaving the ambient sound of my room that's a tad more  alive  than a small studio room, but still very dry. And no reverb added.

I think this assignment's idea was interesting and worked alright here, all the bamboo drums and little hi pitched manual toys sound in your face and the "Booms!"  are extremely wet and it works. I guess.

This weeks prompt immediately gave me the idea of combining an inherently natural reverb sound with a guaranteed unnatural, reverb-free sound. 

The natural reverberated sound comes from two layers of a field recording of a church in Vienna, recorded in October, which provides ambient noises. The naturally guaranteed reverb-free sound consists of several layers of yesterday's WebSDR recordings, which provided rhythmic and melodic components.

The reverb-free sounds here start with a lot of synthetic reverb and end as they are in reality. The church was stripped of reverb from the beginning with two layers of RX10 de-reverb, which is gradually reduced until the natural reverb of the church dominates. Mono/stereo and panning followed these ideas. So at the end of the track there is a naturally reverberant church and the WebSDR noise, which comes naturally without reverb.

I particularly liked this contrast because reverb indicates spaces; a church is more than a space, as a sacred space it has its own spatiality, so to speak, in Karl Popper's World 3, which contains ideas as much as art. The WebSDR signals seem spaceless, and yet they fill the expanding sphere of their propagation – and the signals itself may transport meaning and ideas from a World-3-Level.

Yes, perhaps a little bit over the top, but that's what I liked.

for me complexity is a conceptual endeavour, it's more about the process than the outcome. at the moment, i see complexity as an integration of disparate elements: subjective-objective, creative-analytical, individual-communal, present-past etc. i'm aware that every piece of music i do follows on from another, they are related to each other in some (small?) way. working intuitively allows this to come out i think, but in addition i always combine conscious conceptual elements from previous efforts - my hope is that my soundcloud timeline provides a natural progression track to track. 

i've been working a lot with samples on my last few tracks, so i didn't add anything else. i just went through and isolated small sounds i liked then stretched them and blended in over the course of track (like in sleeping church) but here i was more interested in getting a balance between texture and frequency. i've been working with dronefx on my mixcloud pieces so i used that to generate some note progressions and changed the pitch of the low end sounds. i wanted to make an ambient piece that gradually develops with more texture (again like in all my recent pieces) and i used the concepts of the last two disquiet projects to complement this: i recorded the piece to tape as in summer:impermanence (& fortuitously coz it was the same decrepit old tape a little snippet of that track comes through right at the start!) then i faded between the tape version into the 'clean' version as the track progresses (like in last weeks project).

i wanted the finished piece to sound completely different to the source but still retain something of the spirit of it. i tested this by fading in and out my favourite section of the original  right at the end and i think it works pretty well.

hidden complex (summer mix) (disquiet0188)

This weeks task was to take a track and make it more complex...

Complexity can be approached from various angles, I myself, not being a virtuoso musician, use blunt tactics. 
Previewing the material, I chose to sample (Complexification0010SH by Sun Hammer), The original material was sliced into sections and played back via pads in Ableton, triggering, bouncing and combining the material. After creating a rough sequence of events and patterns by hand and unquantized, I then added some sound design elements to add depth and texture to the sound.  Chains of effects where layered to try and add width.  I'm relying on a mixture of delays and edits to create transitions between the past and I just tried to make an interesting sound collage.

Oh yeah, and it was fun!

Consumer Complex  - Disquiet0188 - Complexcomplex

Lately, I've been enjoying taking a single sample of something and building a whole new track around it. 

I did that mostly with this, a short sample from the 2nd mp3 and then used a bunch of PD samples from freesound along with some VST instruments in Ableton Live - throwing everything but the kitchen sink.. and yet somehow it still sounds unfinished. Will revisit this track in the future.

Started and completed in one session in about 2 hours.

i took the original sample and copied it 8 times as different layers which I then placed into garageband, with each layer being placed slightly to the left of the previous one. this created a complexity in the different spacing of notes and sounds.
I then deleted the beginning 20 secs of the second track (and deleted an extra 20 secs from each of the following tracks so that they all came in slowly to add complexity over an expanded period. i then added 1 effect to each of the layers
layer 1 no effects
layer 2 pitch shift down 
layer 3 slow panning tremolo
layer 4 vocal transformer (pitch down and fierce degradation)
layer 5 pitch shift down
layer 6 vocal trans. (pitch -15 slight degradation)
layer 7 delay (fast sweep)
layer 8 pitch shift down (-12) + 6 second reverb.

- My intention was to have increasing complexity acting upon increasing complexity.
- Did this on my iPad. I used the 2nd track, but really used both. 
- The Sparkle app was used to apply the temporal characteristics of the 1st track onto the 2nd track, so the 2nd track was played with the sound characteristics of the 1st track.
- I took 3 minutes of each track. The 1st track was played at half speed and the 2nd a normal speed. So for this six minute piece the 2nd track (3 minute segment) played twice.
- For the first three minutes it is just the increasing complexity of the 1st track acting on the 2nd track, which itself is increasing in complexity.
- At three minutes delay was added, and then gradually increased.
- Around the last minute I manipulated the filter for additional complexity.
- Recorded the piece in Sparkle, then applied EQ and Compression in Auria.

Transferred Complexity [disquiet0188-complexcomplex]

For this work, I failed to follow directions and I failed to meet the deadline. However, I had fun. :-) I first took both tracks provided to us (I was to have selected one of them) and combined them into one track with the first track in the left channel, and the second track in the right channel. I then threw every software plugin I’ve ever bought and paid for onto the two sides … I don’t work “in the box” very often, so this is my tiny concept of “complicating” something … over-processing it to the point that it becomes essentially noise. Once I had that process complete, I mixed it down to a mono track. I then decided to treat recording it as a field recording exercise. I played it back on my laptop computer with its tinny speakers, and utilized a contact microphone to even further decimate the audio. I processed this microphone in realtime utilizing my modular synthesizer. I created a simple audio path of the left channel patched through a high pass filter, and multed through a low pass filter (effectively creating a notch filter), and then multing the microphone again to an envelope follower which opened and closed both sides of the filters. While all of this was taking place, I concurrently played back the original recording of “Complexification0010SH” on my desktop computer and tried to focus my listening on it exclusively … all the while hooked up to my Soundmachines BI1brainterface which monitored my brainwaves and converted them into CV messages to distribute throughout my modular. I selected specific waves to manipulate the filters further, and also used them to disrupt the signal flow through my reverb and delay. I manipulated nothing in real-time with my hands other than moving the contact microphone twice; once at about 3:15 to move from recording my heavily processed track playing on the laptop to the speakers on my desktop playing “Complexification0010SH,” and again moving the microphone when that song finished to place it against my chest to record my heartbeat which can be heard closing this track. I did not use headphones or monitor recording during this performance and instead relied 100% on the source material and my brainwaves to move things forward.

The seemingly limitless manifestations that are observed during improvisational performance of electronic audiovisual materials drive me to seek collaborative interactions between compositional systems, machines, and myself. In holding space to facilitate an emergence of indeterminate phenomenon through analog synthesis, feedback systems, and field recordings, I share elements from multiple sources to celebrate shapes, patterns, and spaces.

I hold BAs in Art and English from Andrews University, and am currently enrolled in the Electronic Integrated Arts MFA at Alfred University. I was an artist in residency in 2017 at Signal Culture in Owego New York and in 2015 at Sachaqa Centro De ARTE, San Roque Peru. My visual works, and live electronic improvisational performances, have been featured across Peru, at The MuseumsQuartier in Vienna, and throughout the Midwest of America.
 
Note: Much of the work here is subtle in nature and I encourage you to listen via headphones or using a decent system whenever possible. Most computer speakers will not reveal the tracks fully. My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)
