der Sommer, er zeigt sich derzeit mit all seiner Liebe - Sonne satt, blauer Himmel, laue Nächte und Musik an allen (Open Air) Orten. Schnell scheinen da die trüben Tage vergessen und auch die Seasidetrip Crew strandet bei so mancher Strandparty an, feiert mit den Landratten die Nächte durch und den Morgen hinein und schippert dann dem Horizont entgegen, auf zu neuen Abenteuern. Noch Ende Mai heuerte ein gewisser Smutje Ben bei uns an und scheute kein Soundsystem, um mit Bässen und schwungvollen Melodien für triumphale Siege über die Stille und Langeweile zu sorgen. Der Gutste träumt gerne vor sich hin, also, lest seine Zeilen und folgt seinem Traum und teilt seine Bilder und sein Mixset »Rainy Sunshine Mix«, der Seasidetrip Summer Edition 2014 Part 3.

»Ich sitze zu Hause, der Blick schweift am Fenster vorbei, es regnet, es ist kalt und ungemütlich, dabei entsteht der Gedanke an Urlaub, irgendwo hin, weit weg...... an einen Tag am Meer. Mit geschlossenen Augen tauche ich ein, die Bilder flackern vorbei, Erinnerungen, Freunde man fühlt sich fast wie am Meer, entspannt, ein nie enden wollendes Wohlgefühl, Spaß, Freude und die Unendlichkeit des Meeres, nette Menschen, lange Gespräche, lachen, springen, tanzen, frei sein. Doch so schnell ist es auch wieder vorbei, das regnerische Fenster erscheint beim öffnen der Augen und es regnet immer noch. Dann vielleicht doch nochmal an den Strand zurück denk ich mir und mach die Augen wieder zu und lauschen diesen Klängen, welche meinen Traum bereichern und passend wiedergeben.«

Musik nutze ich seit dem ich denken kann mir mein eigenes Leben zu vertonen, eine Symbiose zwischen Bewusstsein und Musik, mein eigener Soundtrack, fortgeschrieben an jedem neuen Tag. Somit war klar, dass sich die elektronische Musik und ich uns schnell begegnen würden, und dies ein folgenschweres Treffen gewesen sein sollte. In über 20 Jahren habe ich viel Genres durchlebt, an jedem meinem Spaß gehabt und freue mich immer noch über neue Sounds, Tunes und Beats wie ein kleines Kind, gerade wenn mich neue Tracks oder Artists überraschen. So etwas kann nur elektronische Musik schaffen. Sound ist wie mein eigenes Leben immer in Bewegung, Tracks die ich spiele, die Genres die ich bevorzuge sind im dauernden Fluss. Natürlich bleibt man oft mal an einem Platz, irgendwann zieht es einen aber dann doch weiter. Harmoniesüchtig und glücklich, gesellig und still, tanzend und wippend, nie still stehen können und doch entspannt  – bpod – wie der Typ so der Sound!

Elektronische Musik lebt von einem auf und ab, so sind auch meine Sets, der Versuch einen immerwährenden Spannungsbogen zu schreiben ist bei jedem Track den ich einsetze der erste Gedanke, der Flow ist oft wichtiger als die Perfektion. Dies ist in Konzept-Sets oft schwierig, denn die einzige Audience die zuhört ist man nunmal selbst.
Im täglichen vertonen oder bei Live-Sets ist der Einsatz von Klassikern oder Remixes von Klassikern, Tracks aus anderen Genres oder ein Abrutscher ins Poppige oder Housige  je nach Stimmung und Publikum immer wieder in der Spannweite. Es ist der Spaß zu überraschen, oder auch der Spaß die Stimmung noch einen Schritt weiter zu treiben, und oft auch selbst überrascht zu sein. Live-Sets entstehen immer vor Ort, es ist daher immer auch für mich ein Erlebnis wenn ich sehe wie sich Tracks und Stimmung vereinen.

We continue our journey with Dogu Civicik, a self­described “guy with a funny last name and an unquenchable thirst for music”. Our next Urban Cosmonaut is somewhat disillusioned with adult life: he strives to recreate sentiments from the past, when everything seemed clear and simple, and when the music persisted long after its time.

While  his  style  fluctuates  in  tune  with  his  current  mood,  the  music  itself  is  meant  to  be anything but temporary. It’s meant to last long after the ebb and flow of genres and styles has died down.

“My roots lie in Anatolia ­ so does my soul, and so does my music.” His work is infused with the sounds of his heritage that helped Dogu Civicik grow into who he is: an artist who has never known the limitations of genres, growing up listening to 70’s jazz and funk and being exposed to traditional Turkish music from his grandfather. 

This  mixtape  is  a  mélange  of  Dogu’s  own  edits  and  productions,  inspired  by  feelings  of misanthropy when he’s confronted by the current state of society. If you listen closely, you can  hear  the  tension  and  the  melancholy ­  and  if  you  listen  even  closer,  you  can  feel  the mood that shaped this special podcast in our series.

To quote Dogu Civicik: the wound is the place where light enters you. Enjoy!

Martha Van Straaten MixTape 015 - Festival Nomade

A reconstruction of my NYE afterhour set in Kater Kiosk on Monday morning, 4th of January 2016. 

The floor wasn't really crowded. But it was filled with the right people. These kind of people that make you realize that it's much more satisfying to select tunes for 25 listeners than pleasing 500 raveheads. Due to the intimate atmosphere this set got more melancholic than expected. All in all it's a mix like twothousandfifteen – with a lot of darkness, a bit of light and a new beginning at the end. Hopefully.

Due to being behind schedule the 52nd podcast comes out straight away to provide you with another quality mix tape from an artist that Sunset Grooves has been a big fan of for a number of years. 

Frau Hofmann who is based in Munich and part of the tanz.t.raum music team kicks off this wonderful set with an absolute gem from oceanvs orientalis. You know this will be an hour long journey in to musical depths where she takes your ears and mind in all sorts of directions yet you have your two feet on the ground. Frau Hofmann has this ease of making transitions between songs to make you have this impression that both songs were made to go one after the other. This mix has an excellent blend of some very cool deep minimal beats with melodic harmonies and calm vocals. 

She keeps on delivering wonderful mix tapes and it is definitely worth taking the time to check her profile where she has produced a number of mixes for renown podcasts from around the world.

A true dance music pioneer, Tom Middleton has built up an impressive back catalogue over the past two decades including collaborations with the likes of Aphex Twin, Josh Wink, Adam Freehand, and notably with Mark Pritchard as Global Communication. That along with his solo prowess and memorable remixes for Kerri Chandler, Orbital, Ennio Morricone, Jon Hopkins and more have marked him out as one of the scene’s most respected artists.

2016 sees the return of Tom Middleton to Anjunadeep with a 4 track re-imagining of his 2015 club hit “HEVA”. The package features reworks from two diverse talents, Vincenzo and Geode, plus additional mixes from Tom himself including a stunning ambient production and 2-Step remix.

Both of Tom’s own EP contributions are trademark examples of his deft skill and ingenuity when reworking his own productions. Two diverse takes on an Anjuna anthem.

Next up, we welcome upcoming UK producer and Middleton’s own tipped talent, Geode, with his garage infused club roller, awash with wavering synths and quirky percussive licks.

Anjunadeep legend Vincenzo returns the favour following Tom’s much-loved 2012 remix of ’Sometimes Saturday', offering up a signature melodic rework, complimenting the spacey atmospherics of the original with a hallmark deep rolling bassline. Debuted by James Grant during his live set at Anjunadeep Miami, Vincenzo's deep house cut has already begun the rounds, a peak summer gem.

3 QUESTIONS to FRIVOLOUS:

Q) You´re living on an isle in Canada (Gabriola Island, BC), really close to Vancouver but it seems also a bit far away from civilization. What´s special living on the countryside, especially for being a musician?

A) I was fighting the urge to return to the west-coast for some years while living in the EU. It was kind of my dream to live on these islands and make music. So now we're doing it, and we love helping to shape the scene as it begins to develop again.  

Q) How did you get in touch with electronic music once?

A) I went with some high-school friends to my first "rave" in 96/97, and I was hooked. Punk was too aggressive, which I was kind of into. So this spark started a fire, which has been burning ever since. 

Q) Another tour in Europe is scheduled for December. Where will you be playing and also which Frivolous releases can we expect in 2017?

A) For the tour, I don't really know. I think the usual countries, Portugal, France, Germany, Ukraine back in the mix, so that should be cool. Regarding a new release, I just finished a 3-track EP, but I have no idea where it will be released. Demo's are going out, so stay tuned for news.

Frivolous - HOW I MET THE BASS #35

Kicking off the week with this groovy psychedelic soundscape set played by Safak OzKutle AKA “Oceanvs Orientalis” is a formation which aims to challenge the aesthetic perception in electronic music.

It blends itself with the archaelogic tunes of mankind’s cumulative musical history and in this very context believes that “everything comes from the east”.

Despite of being an electronic-based formation -due to practical reasons- at the moment, it intends to transform into a dance (to move the body and feet to music) orchestra where each instrument will be played by its own instrumentalist.

@bpod ist gebürtiger Nürnberger und wohnt nun schon seit einiger Zeit in good old Köln. Wohnort ist zwar nun anders, aber bei einer Sache ist er sich treu geblieben: Unverwechselbarer Sound, treibend, hypnotisierend und beschwingt zugleich.

Der heutige Podcast kommt von einem meiner langjährigsten Musikgefährten und besten Freund überhaupt --- bpod oder auch besser bekannt als Benni. Bpod ist ein fränkisches Original den es vor ein paar Jahren in die rheinische Metropole Köln verschlagen hat. 

Zusammen feiern gehen Benni und ich seit Mitte der 90er Jahre. Angefangen hat alles mit äußerst wilden Goa-Partys die wir im Kollektiv Space-Family in und um Nürnberg herum veranstaltet haben. Hier sei besonders die Psychedelic Penthouse Reihe in einem alten 70er Jahre Penthouse und unsere legendären illegalen Psychedelic Space Garden OpenAirs erwähnt --- was für Abfahrten. 

Um 2000 hat Benni dann selbst angefangen hinter dem DJ-Pult zu stehen. Jahre lang hat er im Spitzdach unserer WG die Nacht zum Tag gemacht und Stunden um Stunden am DJ-Pult verbracht. Auf diversen Privat-Partys und Happening ist Benni immer wieder ein beliebter Gast aufgrund seines Power-Sounds. Vom ersten Moment war Benni auch ein fester Bestandteil unseres kleinen Happenings „von Freunden für Freunde“ und ich kann mich noch genau an die grandiose Abfahrt Samstags Abend 2013 erinnern … da hat die Wiese geglüht.

Lieber Benni schön dass es Dich und deinen Sound gibt … es ist mir immer wieder eine wahre Freude dein Freund zu sein. Und nun wünsch ich meinen Hörern viel Spaß bei einer Runde bpod.
