DJ Groovematic born Tony Evans is a 50-year music veteran whose roots
trace back to the suburbs of New York City. A triple-threat talent in the world
of hip hop, he is celebrated as a master DJ, prolific music producer, and elite
ghostwriter. Over the past five decades, he has remained an authentic force
in hip hop culture preserving its roots, pushing its boundaries, and educating
the next generation.
A former U.S. Army serviceman, Groovematic took hip hop global,
showcasing his turntablism in European clubs during the late ’80s. His early
claim to fame came in the ’90s as the DJ for RCA Records “Two Kings in a
Cipher,” touring nationwide alongside legends like A Tribe Called Quest,
Brand Nubian, and Busta Rhymes.
Groovematic’s sonic range transcends genres effortlessly blending classic hip
hop, R&B, house, rare grooves, and soul. He has earned the moniker “your
favorite music producer’s favorite DJ” due to his ability to make every mix
sound fresh, timeless, and alive.
His production credits speak volumes: he worked with Bad Boy’s Records
famed production team, The Hitmen, Producing “Come With Me (The Remix)”
for the Godzilla Movie soundtrack, and contributed to the underground
classic “Da Bosses Lady” by Kool G Rap on the Roots of Evil album. He also
co-wrote “What’s Up Star” for Sweet Tee (aka Suga) featured in Russell
Simmons’ Movie Soundtrack The Show.
In Atlanta, Groovematic spent five years as the resident DJ and host of WREK
91.1 FM’s “The Technique Show,” where he curated playlists, booked guests,
and produced radio segments. He also headlined high-profile events for
Coca-Cola/Sprite, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, the NY Giants’ Atlanta fan club,
One Music Fest, and DJs Day Out ATL.
Deeply rooted in education, DJ Groovematic has taught Hip Hop History and
Culture at institutions like Clark Atlanta University, Emory, Georgia Tech,
Clayton County Schools, and Radikal DJ Academy. He also teaches DJ”ing for
the City of Atlanta’s After School Program and currently serves as the Music
Program Director for The Emtri Cannabis Network.
A passionate leader in the hip hop community , Groovematic served for six
years as resident DJ for @SoulfoodCypher, a nonprofit using freestyle rap to
build literacy and elevate hip hop culture. DJ Groovematic runs an
independent A&R company dedicated to discovering, developing, and
marketing emerging artists, he uses hip hop as a tool for learning,
empowerment, and education.
Armed with a degree in Brand Marketing from Strayer University, DJ
Groovematic continues his mission: to be the face of Hip Hop academia and
preserving the original history of hip hop culture.
