Track 9 from our 2003 "Rails" album. This song was never played the same way twice, it was our quintessential warm-up jam track and developed from there. It was always fun to see where each version would go, almost always a musical adventure between the four of us. Ballarat is a regional city in Victoria where David, Craig and Trent met and spent the formative years of the band just after finishing our visual arts degrees. There was a lot of 'experimentation' in those days. On occasions Craig would gaffer tape a shortwave radio to his head and play it as an instrumental tuning in various frequencies and running them through his effects pedals. The lyrics were written by uni friend and local poet Andrew Sutherland, with vocals on this version by Craig.

"Chrysalis: the transformation from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis and, finally, adult." But the Axolotl exhibit neoteny, meaning that they reach sexual maturity without undergoing metamorphosis. Evolution has decreed that they're better off staying forever young. They can even regrow their limbs. We were so amazed with these little amphibious Mexicans we decided to dedicate a song to them.
