Mass Gravity is a collaboration of incongruous beings clustered together hailing from Northern Ireland and Melbourne, Australia. These ‘triple-threat’ astro band members produce an informed rap lyrical voice (Phillip ‘Gub’ Alcock), tenacious and electromagnetic guitar riffs (Matt Mckay), and mesmerising bass emissions (Luke Mckay). Their trans-dimensional music is the dark, biogenic hybridisation of rap-rock, with its slimy tentacles assimilating electronic, reggae, punk, and dub as it invades both the sound and space around them. The genesis of the Mass Gravity project could be traced back to a desolate office cubicle at a commission in Melbourne, where the unexpected siren of an Aphex Twin ringtone would settle Gub and Matt within one another’s atmosphere. In discovering a shared passion for major musical projects, like Gorillaz, The Roots, and the infamous N.A.S.A. project, they were fiercely determined to produce their own original work as a group, and this where Mass Gravity was born. During the hyper-speed acceleration of the Mass Gravity project, it has attracted some incredible collaborations with an assortment of beings. To date, the project has attracted the attention of numerous Australian musicians, from numerous genres, and collaborations can be heard from vocalists like Roni Shewan, the jazz-inspired frontman for A State in Flux, Dana Roskvist, the melodic lead-singer for metal band, Sydonia, and Luke Wood, an instrumentalist from the tribal ambient music group, Geamala. And though The Economy Class EP has taken over nine arduous, yet hyper, years to create, the trio is currently collaborating on a new exciting EP, and preparing to launch live performances of their genre-blending music for fans to enjoy in their cosmic playground. MUSHROOM GIANT followed and set the bar high. It hadn’t been for a long time that this reviewer had watched a support act and suspected the main act could possibly be upstaged. Listening to MUSHROOM GIANT was like seeing a William Blake painting interpreted by MOGWAI, TRAVELLING FLOWER BAND and SWANS at their most recent. A vocalist of Cedric Bixler or Matt Bellamy’s ilk could perhaps take them that extra mile towards greatness. Nonetheless, MUSHROOM GIANT were at the very least on par with some of their better known contemporaries."
